    Perhaps being net saavy means that you know enough to farm it out and not have to:
    1) worry about doing it yourself, and
    2) being able to blame it on someone else when it all goes badly (or is revealed as spam).

    If you happen to get to Philly, be sure to see the usual things: Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and get a good cheesesteak.

    But if you want to see something REALLY ONE OF A KIND: get your ass to the The Mütter Museum. It's a trip if you can stomach it. It's not for everyone, but it is certainly unique.

    I just recently heard that here at Virginia Tech we are getting a (massive?) grid comprised of some of the first dual-processor G5s rolling off the assembly line at Apple. The number of machines? I believe it was in the 1100 range.

    Thus, if you like grid computing and want to do some research as a grad student or whatever, this might be the place for you.

    With offshore spammers and the like, who the f#(* is going to be able to enforce that?

    If they can/do, I think a law should be passed that bans spam for .gov and .edu domains. It would help keep the spam from clogging up the government machines/networks (it's likely clogged enough already with them folks doing "work"), and would help keep the porn spam from getting to kids. (Plus I work at a univ. and it would help me!)

    No thanks. Once this gets rolled out, Ashcroft will want to be able to "monitor" what's going on, so that persons of interest will be more easily monitored.

    I can see it now.... I'm a suspected terrorist or otherwise a person of interest... my phone makes a bunch of plans for me (spied on by some law enforcement agency). Unbeknownst to me, while I'm sitting there watching Matrix Revolutions the three feds around me are plotting my capture while another two are at my house going through my shit (since they know I'm not at home). Sold out by my phone and provider. No thanks.

    Wake up folks, not all of this is stuff we really need in our lives.

    As someone that is about to finish his Ph.D. dissertation, I have to copyright my work as I publish it to my school's on-line dissertation initiative.

    Reading the /. blurb (and not the full article), doesn't that mean no one in Sweeden can then download my (freely available), yet copyrighted dissertation without asking my permission first? That's nuts.

    First off, it's tied to the web, and unless I specify, anyone can download the PDF we deliver to the ETD project. I don't care who dowloads this crap.

    Secondly, I don't want emails asking for my permission to download this, or anything else I work on, yet copyright.

    Ugh, this RIAA/DRM/patent nonsense really makes me loathe working with computers now.

    As a coder in my mid twenties (10 years ago) I had a feeling something like this would be an issue in my career. I decided to go back to school and get a Ph.D. and go teach. Once I get tenure.... YEAH baby, they're going to need a crowbar to get my ass out the door!

    Think about all of the software everywhere that would have to change (even just in the U.S.) to support that. It would likely have a greater impact (in terms of applications effected) than Y2K did.

    Of course, changing all of that software would help the economy for programmers and other techincal folks. Hmm, perhaps this isn't so bad after all!

    When we wanted cold beer, we sent the newest staffer out to pick up several COLD 6-packs of "productivity enhancers". Works like a charm and I had less bugs when coding as well!

    Actually, I keep thinking of going to the press about this, especially once my PhD signature card has been completed and submitted. I'm sure one of our dopey local news channels would love to expose abuse of state property by one of its employees.
