Linking a SQL table into Excel (size not withstanding) is actually done fairly often. Excel's Pivot functions are far better than anything Access has to offer. This makes creating drill down and dynamic pivot charts and tables very useful for combing through data. I know quite a few companies that use this set up to help them forcast their numbers.
As for the using Excel as a source, yes I agree it a precarious implementation (I wouldn't recommend it), but again, I see quite a few people who have this set up as well.
Never mind, went deeper and answered my own question: "Microsoft has released an update for Microsoft Access 2002. This update removes the functionality in Access 2002 that lets users add new data to or edit existing data in a linked Microsoft Excel worksheet."
Two words: Hell no. That's not a "small" part of the market segment, IMO.
Okay, I RTFA, and nowhere does it state what exactly it is removing or changing. I use Access very hevily with Excel. Popping data back and forth between the two. What is it going to break and what is a workaround?
"So, wouldn't the better solution be for manufacturers to not ship broken hardware as production units?"
They wern't broken units. The hardware functioned fine, the paths were there. They were just lacking the software support to enable it. So rather than retool their whole fabrication process just to have a model without S-Vid, it's easier to ship it without it enabled. Though I wish I would have known about that earlier. I had a D800 A01 and for the life of me I could never figure out why the S-Vid wasn't working. guess that explains that.
"but won't be enough to cover the billions of people who don't yet live in highly wired/mechanized societies.
This statement contradicts itself with an earlier statement. Developing nations will skip some of the copper uses that are deployed today, just like more developing nations use cell phones rather than land lines. New pipes will be PVC, new data roll outs will use fiber, alternate methods will be found. Seriously this sounds like FUD to me.
Yawn... okay, I state this evertime someone talks about a modded XBox so here we go again:
I want a HTPC that lives up to it's name... "Home Theatre" That means wide screen high-def. An xbox simply can't do that, it just doesn't have the hardware. A 700Mhz processor chokes on DivX-HD and WMV-HD. I need processing power to be able to play those and a modded xbox just can't handle it.
"You think murder is legal/constitutional on private property?"
Heh, you obviously have never been in Texas. Here, it's quite legal:) Though so is shooting your wife and lover if you catch them in bed together (gotta love that law)
Yeah, but on the flip side you should have seen the lines. The iPod line was flying. People getting in line, getting their gear, and gone in a couple of minutes. Where the cash and everything else line was wrapping around the store with people waiting and waiting. I almost didn't pick up my nano when I saw the line, but then I noticed the iPod table and all was merry.
There is a *big* problem with having an Xbox for a media center... it's puny processor can't handle WMV-HD (or Divx-HD for that matter). yes it has component out and can output a 720p or 1080i stream but it chokes hard on a 700Mhz processor. That's the biggest reason I never considered it. Now the 360 on the other hand... (Also, I want a DVI out instead of just component)
Windows actually has support for this, but it's limited to the hardware. Case in point, the higher end dell servers (6xxx and 8xxx) support hot plugging of PCI devices. Open the case, press the button to power down the PCI slot, swap the card, then press the button again to turn it back on. The support between the OS and the Server is alright, it's the apps you have to watch out for as quite a few of them don't expect a RAID card or NIC to suddenly get switched.
Okay, Creative is still missing one key thing. I want a card that can encode (NOT decode) to Dolby Digital (EX) or DTS (ES) in real time! None of this ProLogic II or Neo:6 crap, or using 6 (or 8) analog outs. I want to be able to run an optical cable from my sound card to my stereo and get a multichannel digital stream that I can play around with.
"and having parties where more than 10 people watch a movie on DVD without paying royalties!!!!"
Actually, I have a question about that. Is there a limit to the number of people that is considered to be a private viewing? Seriously, if I had a party and had 20 of my friends over to watch a movie, would I *technically* have to pay royalties? Or does the public/private debate end when I start charging to see it? (though does that include BYOB)
Hell, I had a Win2K box doing internal routing for a couple years. Turns out the HDD went belly up quite a while ago but I never noticed because it was running completely from memory. Though once the next reboot occured:)
The biggest reason why I have avoided a hacked Xbox to this day is it's procsesor. The processor cannot handle the decoding of WMV9-HD files, it completely chokes on them. That and an HTPC gives me the ability of a DVI out to connect straight to my TV, you can't get that on an XBox
You know, I really don't like to feed the trolls, but you have a fallacy going on here. With the exception of 2 of the luxury SUV's all of them have over 15MPG city, and most 20+ highway. Granted the Hummer and Mercedes G55 AMG have very low MPG's but the rest of them all exceed the mark that you chose. So think next time before you try flaming luxury owners.
In Soviet Russia Ponies OMG you! :)

Ooh, I love it when you talk geek.

Because we all know: Samsung means to come.

You obviously haven't seen any Japanese game shows....

Wow, thank you. That makes sense. I just wasn't sure if this was a case of law actually being logical :)

Voodoo 5 6000 anyone? Is this thing going to require its own external power brick just to the board?
Combustible, eh... Wonder what it would look like if you dropped a match in there :)
You mean like this?

Guess you've never been to Texas :)
On another note, this kind of reminds me of the movie "Toys" with Robin Williams.
