300 leagues - would that refer to Isengard or Mordor? I don't have my map of Middle Earth available. But perhaps if it was Boromir who spoke of the "Enemy" he would be referring to Mordor, whereas someone from Rohan would have inferred Saruman as the enemy.
The mountain had its own independent evil. There were older things in Middle Earth, beyond Saruman, that could be controlled by the mind of Sauron, or acted on their own (like the Balrog and Shelob).
It ain't new here, but it seems that way because of our media. Name any other country with as many global media/cable networks as we have. I've travelled in Asia and Europe, and you can basically get the same US-centric news there that you do in the states. Slightly different slant perhaps, but still american. I would personally prefer not to see CNN everywhere I go.
(1) the populace in the US is not armed to the teeth. (2) Nudity is immoral. But why do you feel owning a gun is? Actually, I believe many europeans would invert that last statement. Just a cultural difference.
Yes, I have been living in China for the last 2 years, and also spent a lot of time in Nepal, India, and Tibet. If I have housing and food I'm happy - most people in this world can't count on that. If I can't buy the latest laptop... that doesn't bother me anymore.
Hell freakin' no! Haven't you guys ever heard of Hugh Laurie? He's a british actor who has achieved a real following with the BBC's adaptation of PG Wodehouse's novels, as well as playing in several other movies (bio on IMDB). His role as Bertie Wooster in the Wodehouse series makes him the perfect Arthur Dent. Hugh Grant... is just so sure of himself. I doubt he can play the real Arthur Dent, the man who continually wanders around the universe in his pyjamas. It just doesn't work.
but yea, I mean, it will take for ever for it to come out. I mean think of all that waiting...oh god, I'm so depressed. I'm not getting you down am I? I mean, you think you have problems, what are you supposed to do with a manically depressed robot?
How many people saw the early 80s mini-series of THGTTG. On the whole, I rather liked it. It had a lot of the same people as the radio series, Simon Jones as the Book, Peter Jones as Arthur and the same guy for Ford Prefect.
er, that's Tora Bora pal. Bora Bora is actually a rather nice island in the South Pacific. Perhaps you are suggesting Bin Laden may be found at Club Med?
because he has charisma, that's why. lots and lots of charisma. I'm sure he can play a just as over-the-top and goofy superman as christopher reeve di-Oh Wait! they have the same last name! that's why they picked Keanu - he's the son of superman!
Yea, I also work for a foreign company here in China, and if I use our proxy, or if I use my own proxy at home even, I can access any thing - the only problem is that it is painfully slow. Without the proxy, I have to resort to other means to access Google (or geocities, or any other blocked domain).
I'm on a project in Shenzhen, China right now (about 45 minutes from Hong Kong)
Google is still blocked, but it is very spotty. If I try to go directly to www.google.com,I am blocked. If I ping google.com, the resolved IP (216.239.51.100) is functional.
Also, Google Labs is still functional (labs.google.com) as well as this site
umm... I'm having no trouble accessing slashdot from China at this moment. I don't think we need to worry about/. being blocked because it's an english language site, and while a lot of people here in China speak english (in varying degrees) I have yet to find anyone who reads it regularly. I assume they have their own equivalents.
actually, the blocking over here is pretty spotty. If I try going directly to the page via the url, it resolves to this ip: 216.239.33.101 and times out. If I ping google, I get back this ip 216.239.51.100 and can usually run a search. I'm guessing the telco here blocked out a range of IPs and just happened to miss a few.
Thank god for Google Labs, once again. You can run a search off of Keyboard Shortcuts, and take advantage of cached copies, etc. Some of the images that were on the main google server don't come up. But hey, it works. Also, Google Images/Google Directory & Google Groups still work. I'm currently in China right now on a project, and coding without Google is not easy - especially since there isn't any english bookstore I can run over to while I'm here to pick up a tech manual. But maybe I shouldn't be posting this? I guess this is a good chance to see if the Chinese government reads/.:)
PWC was going to change its name to Monday and have an IPO to raise money. Now that it's been bought out, they no longer need an IPO. Probably the fact that they needed money is why they were bought out so easily.
As far as your figures, for 2nd Quarter 2002, IBM Global Services (consulting) revenue was 8.7b out of 19.7b (44%) total. Hardware made up 6.7b/19.7b (34%) and software 3.3b/19.7b (16.5%), and the rest other units.
A subsection of IBM Global Service (BIS - Business Intellience Services) will be merged as a new unit with PWC. Apparently PWC has/had 45% of the Fortune500 companies as clients.

Google Labs - allows full searches, can circumvent firewall
Soap Client for Google Searches
Google Groups - still accessible for usenet searching.

Shouldn't this be a poll? I want my "reach for Cowboy Neal" option
I could do this in MS Paint and Adobe Premiere in a half an hour... what the heck. Move a white pixel across a grey background...
It's always up to the buyer to do his research. What advertisements aren't misleading?

So we hate the MPAA today. Noyce!
