  2. Get your school to apply for grants... on Affordable and Usable Video Conferencing? · · Score: 1

At the university where I work, we got a $100,000 grant from the USDA to upgrade our aging V-tel units to Tandberg systems a few years ago. If you want this done right, you'll need the right equipment, it's just that the equipment costs an arm and a leg and getting free money from the government helps. Also, perhaps going through a videoconferencing underdog like LifeSize could help get you going. I hear LifeSize is trying to get their foot in the door by providing sweet deals that undercut the likes of Cisco, Tandberg, and Polycom. Good luck!

  10. The good that can come from this on FCC Considers Deregulation of DSL · · Score: 1

I know most of you are like, "no, monopolies are teh suck," but in states with low-broadband deployment, it will encourage telephone companies to spend the money for DSL stations and repeaters. Telephone companies have been slow to provide the new DSL infrastructure because they feared that as soon as they'd do it, the competition will take their possible subscribers away, and the DSL infrastructure will have been installed at a loss to them. Sometimes, monopolies can be good as it's an incentive to get things done. I live in a rural part of Kentucky and though Lincoln County is better off than many other counties, this will incourage BellSouth and Verizon to invest in the DSL infrastructure. Sadly, we don't have cable TV (cable TV means eventual cable Internet) here either and no lines are coming out soon--the satellite providers have already taken their business.

  11. Re:Where's MacDraw? on 29 Vector Drawing Programs · · Score: 1

Heh, well, didn't MacDraw save things as PICT? I always thought PICT was a good format. It was the most favored Mac image format for years, but then came along Mac OS X, mostly putting an end to PICT in favor of PDF.

From what I can tell, SVG is very much like PICT. Remember, PICT could have vector and non-vector components within the same file.

  12. Re:I would find this useful... on IRC On The PSP · · Score: 3, Insightful

I totally agree! I hate the PSP's keypad and I believe it would be a good idea if Sony allowed one to choose between a keyboard or the keypad. (An option in the System settings would be nice).

I guess they thought it would appeal more toward people who text message all the time. Though, it's not the same as using a phone since you have to navigate the cursor to the button with the letter or number you want. It's way more tedious and annoying than text messaging.

Ultimately, it's a shame the PSP doesn't have a touch screen... The NDS beats the PSP for data input any day. (Man, if it did have a touch screen, Nintendo would be fuct!)

Though, I have heard that there are keyboards in development. Oh boy, there will be some more crap to buy for the already expensive PSP.

At the University of Kentucky ResNet, there have been DMCA complaints (filed by third party companies whose sole purpose is to snitch on fileswapers). The RIAA, until recently, hasn't filed any complaints with UK. Now over the past few weeks I've been seeing RIAA (probably around 30-40 thus far) complaints--wow, sucks to be those students and the complaints are over the stupidest songs. Anyway, the other day I started to see MPAA complaints in the list. This leads me to wonder if these persons are among the first wave of people to get sued by the MPAA.

Oh I'm glad I'm not among these students. It's funny though, most have no clue of what's going on, and one, upon being told he was blocked for a DMCA violation, said, "Well I don't know how--I pay for KaZaa."
