IF the GSP model is something that will happen - it will be interesting to see if this becomes a good marketing model.

If this proves to be good youll see things like "command and Conquer generals: EXCLUSIVELY at Verizon Internet Services"

    or something like that...

but its a good idea. I mean imagine if all your opponents are on the same core ISP - the ping time average for all users would be around the same (ideally).

anyway - what if you take the SBC/Yahoo model further.

You will get ISPs and Gaming/Content companies who team up to provide you with specific exclusive offerings. A more specialized ASP - from an entertainment perspective.

Might make a small local pop-colo model viable - if you know that your local game colo is going to have close good lines for you, you would be inclined to use them.

lots of avenues to think about on these lines.

Although I think thats a nice analogy - i really really REALLY hope that you are wrong in that if we look at petrol stations now we have a franchise where the price is set by a cartel and petrol is sold to the station owner who then adds a very small amount for his profit.

The problem is that the cartel sets up this system where the price keeps racheting up - and if we share the model even deeper - we will see that the bandwidth cartel will then start pricing access based on traffic load on the systems

so in times they will shut down some key hubs like mae west for "maintenance" and then charge a premium for access during those times due to increased load.

The problem is that we have to move AWAY from BOTH the lame ass system that the cell phone mafia has AND the fucked up ratched price programming that the fuckers in the oil industry use.

What we NEED is less GREED in these systems so that there is a set price for unlimited monthly access - and the price should be at 20 bux a month. period.

People should pay any carrier 20 dollars a month and no more - That price represents what a good company can sell access at and still make a profit.

change the model all together and put companies like cingular out of business.

The other aspect that makes this an interesting weapon to have on a 747 - let the 747 fly into enemy territory with an escort fighter squadron - the fighters protect the 747 - which protects the fighters and maybe bombers from enemy missles.

This would be a great thing to have in Command and Conquer: generals...

"The edges and screen corners are easy to hit, but grossly underutilised by GUI designers"

I dont get this - what about all the drop down menus that are at the top edge of the screen.

What about the START button in the bottom left - and top left on Macs?

What about the information status bars on the bottom of web browsers?

No - I think that the biggest problems with online GUIs is the tendancy of designers to model their interfaces after traditional text based "interfaces" like newspapers and books and traditional publishing styles.

There is not much innovation (in the mainstream) to navigating an interface.

There are major problems with full GUI interfaces - one is efficiency.

I am a perfect example of this - I am a very proficient AutoCAD designer and I close every single menu thats in autocad. I can type any command with my left hand faster than anyone I have ever met can click on it...

I despise any sort of clickable GUI in this environment as it requires my cursor to travel away from my primary focus of work - which is with the lines of the drawing. I would prefer to have more flexability with the keyboard as well - there are things that GUI (interface) designers just cannot know unless they are a full time production user of an interface.

For example in AutoCAD I should be able to toggle between orthographic and free movement constraints with a key-press combo - like ctrl+shift. I also should have totally transparent zooming and panning (especially panning) with a ctrl+shift+alt or some other key combo...

GUI targets on the periphery might seem like a good idea to the casual user of them - but when having to interface with a machine for many hours each day, every day - having things either totally controlled by the keyboard, or at least as close together as possible is important.

In CAD design applications - the focus of the mouse cursor should be all manipulation of the object/information. The keyboard should be used to issue commands. This minimizes the movement of the mouse and makes drawing/designing much more efficient.

The worst is when you have to remove your hand from the mouse in order to type something.

Almost all buildings have water systems. If they were not designed from the ground up to have a Data Center like room then every room will likely have it.

When a tennant leases a building the likely hood that they will use an existing room for their servers is high. The likely hood that they will actually do something about the water systems that may be in the rooms is not as high.

Many companies that dont have computers as their core business (like manufacturing) may not have the sense about them to look at all the risks to their systems in the event of even a small fire - one where the fire doesnt actually damage anything, but just sets off the sprinklers.

    Yes and more.

Its a great tool *especially* in an IT environment.

But rather than IM I prefer to setup internal IRC. The reason? Bots.

Your bot can learn the things that are common to your IT information environment.

Whats really nice is say you have an agreed upon standard for IT nomenclature etc...

You can the hop on IRC (which not to mention works wonders when your IT staff are geographically dispersed) and type in: PDC01-SITE1 (if that was the name of your PDC for example) and the bot can reply with info -like IP etc..

Or it can make fun of it for you....

The other really valuable thing about it is having IRC for allowing development groups to be able to hop on and ask offline questions (questions that dont require stopping in at an office - or hitting some IT person up in the hallway)....

and yet ANOTHER key feature of all this is - LOGGING.

You can log all your conversations for use in compiling great FAQs - and you can use the bot to this end as well....

Other than this specific use - I never use IRC... but you IM quite a bit for friends.

but IRC for IT - IM for users to user communication.

I would encourage both in any organization, so long as users are aware that all communications are logged on the corporate IM of choice. Whether you setup a policy regarding AIMing and IMing with ppl outside the co is up to you.
