  1. Why Do We Need A "Pledge of Allegiance"? on Pledge of Allegiance Ruled Unconstitutional · · Score: 2

It just seems like making kids stand up and pledge their allegiance to a country is something you'd hear about in totalitarian societies who are paranoid that their kids will grow up to be enemies of the State. Of course in communist-paranoid McCarthy-ism 1950s USA that may have been the case. It just seems out of place in todays society. Perhaps because of the disillusionment and rampant cynicism of today's people, myself included.

That said, I am glad to see the "under God" go. I'm a Catholic who goes to church every Sunday and sings in the church choir (seriously), but I'm a firm believer in the separation of church and state. And although another comment was marked Funny, I do think the "In God We Trust" on U.S. currency should be removed.

Eh? OpenOffice.org reads/writes Word/Excel docs perfectly. Aside from some bullet-point font issues, Powerpoint handles perfectly as well.

All you have to do is copy some DLLs from the Java directory into the Mozilla plugin directory.

Granted it is misleading when the JDK says it will install the plugin for that browser but then doesn't, but the workaround is pretty painless.

Although I often wonder why I need to do these extra steps for Flash/Shockwave/Java. I'm assuming it is up to the plugin developers to get it to work.

Note that the following story is real. It might seem funny, but I'm not making this up: I had this same problem with (believe it or not) Minesweeper. I had a mac laptop, but my roommate had the new Windows 95 and I sat down one day and started playing Minesweeper while waiting for a friend. I was hooked from the start. I would skip class to play Minesweeper. Seriously. It was sad. I HAD to get a better time than before. Any computer I sat down at I had to get all the best times. I still do to this point if I sit down at a friends or relatives computer, I'll 0wn their minesweeper scores.

I knew I had a problem when I was in the shower in the dorms. The showers had tile walls and tile floors. I was standing in the shower staring at the tiles and suddenly I was seeing the numbers and mines and I was playing minesweeper in my head against a tile wall with nothing on it. Granted I didn't think the mines were going to blow me up or anything, so it was a pretty mild hallucination, if it even qualifies as one.

I was able to walk away for the most part. I can still play for an hour or so if I get tired of Medal of Honor or coding.

This is the word of God. Matthew 3:17

Seriously I couldn't agree more. Just last night I installed woody. This is probably my second debian install. When it came time for me to go into dselect I got horribly lost. I accidentally hit space bar, then return and then space again (or something to this effect) and the system ended up quitting dselect and saying I was all done.

So I thought "no big deal, I'll just log in from work tomorrow and apt-get the rest". Well at work this morning I find out that the base install doesn't even include ssh or telnet servers.

Despite what you faithful readers may think I'm not a complete moron and can usually get my way around an installation program, but dselect was just horrible.
