They're tricky on their site about saying "UnixWare is a trademark of blah blah blah" on the same page, but that doesn't mean smallfoot is based on UnixWare. Does anyone know if something else is in place of Linux under smallfoot now, or does SCO continue to support (by releasing) GPL'ed software?

It is up to the reader to decide, based on multiple criteria, whether or not they believe/trust/put stock in the information's deliverer.

Consider that not all readers are after accuracy. Why else would all the "tabloids" be doing so well? The market for sensational media is large enough that certain news outlets are not worried about those readers looking for the truth, but those looking for sensationalism. And those looking for sensationalism like to see the material in a "news" format. It makes it seem more realistic to them.

It's just a separate market segment that happens to use the same medium as real news for the dissemination of their information.

That doesn't mean the screens themselves will support that resolution (yet). But in the article it is abundantly clear that they're really, REALLY targeting multimedia applications for this OS, and very much want to push PalmOS into the "true modern operating system" realm. So big numbers like 32,000 x 32,000 sound good to people who don't know any better. At least I'm not aware of any technology that can deliver that many pixels in the size of current palm screens.

One thing that's nice about using roman-character-based languages for DNS is that there's only one REAL way to spell things. But what about in Japanese where you can use kanji, hiragana/katakana, or romaji?

For example, what if someone wants to have the domain "nanisore.com" (translated: "what is that?"). Do they get the domain in kanji/hiragana, all hiragana, or all romaji? I guess they have to buy all combinations if they want the domain exclusively. Ugh.

(That must be the point of this whole exercise. Make the domain registrars more money by creating the need to register multiple domains where one would have sufficed previously! :) )

  22. Know the regulations on Geocaching Crackdown? · · Score: 1
Regardless of what comes of all of this, make sure you know the regulations of your forest/park/monument/etc. They can be different for each separate place, even if they are federally controlled areas.

I mention this because I was actually given a warning citation for hiking off of a trail in an area in Utah where I was fairly certain that was allowed. I researched the regulations online and found that hiking off trail was banned only in areas where this was clearly posted. There was no posting at all about hiking off trail, so I contacted the Forest Service. Eventually they put me in contact with the Patrol Commander and she agreed with me that the officer who gave me the citation made a mistake. (As it turned out, the guy had some cutsie college intern ranger girl with him. The impression I got was that he was trying to "show her the ropes" and show off a little...)

Ok, so that may have been a bit excessive for a simple warning, but it was the principle. I got a chance to explain geocaching to a person who has some influence on the rules in this area. She understood that geocachers are generally respectful of nature and know the rules of leaving no trace.

So please know the rules in your area and communicate with the officials. They're people, too, and they love the outdoors. If they understand that we have the same respect as they do for the land, they'll be more willing to let us show that respect. And if you disagree with a regulation, let the regulating body know with an explanation of why. You may end up changing things for the better!
