The "crime" here would be if you were to market and advertise a product as having features not yet implemented. This not only a crime in the legal sence but is also unethical. Not that any mega-corp in America today would do such a thing...not that i'm cynical or anything.

This reminds me of a promotion they did in the 80s with the cans of coke. If it was a winner it had a spring loaded thingy in it that would pop out a bill (5-10-20) something like that.
There was a counterweight in the bottom of the can that contained some kind of liquid...so it would act (sound like liquid and water would condense on the outside of the can) like a normal can. There were two problems with this however. The first one I figured out when I won once. The winning cans could be detected because they had filled the can from the bottom and put a silver sticker over the filling hole. The second problem was they didn't always work. Some kid got sick from drinking the "filler" liquid.
They ended up pulling the promo...but not before I had searched through every six pack of Coke I could find. I made a fortune in a couple of hours at a grocery store. Too bad I spent all the cash on candy and baseball cards...

heh. I almost went to jail for this once. I reqested a C-note from an atm inside a grocery store. The ATM made the clicking sound like it was going to give me my money but never did...and the money slot stayed open. I went to the tape isle in the store and got a roll of duct tape and encased that machine in duct-tape.
The bank that owned the machine never gave me back my ATM card. They called the police on me...but I had already left.

If you want to read PKD, i think his best stuff was from the late 60's early 70's. The short stories from the 50's and early 60's feel like quick thoughts that PKD was shooting out on the fly, stuff he was thinking through on his way to later full thoughts.

I wish i had heard this before I got the book I am currenty reading. Oddly enough I just put the book down to check my mail and wandered over to slashdot. It's a reprint of short stories that piggybacked on the release of Minority Report to the theater. Covers the years 54-64. I agree that some of the stories in this time period could be taken further, they are definatly worth the read. Especially if you have 1/2 to an hour to kill and don't want to start a whole book. I have yet to pick up one of his novels...any suggestions? Of what I've read it's excellent sci-fi...way way ahead of it's time.

I don't think so. The photo I'm talking about (the only one where it's possible to see the plates) has obviously been altered. There is what looks like a rectangle of blur over where the plates are. If you zoom out to regular size...even with it being a cheep throw away camera the picture looks clear enough to where you should be able to pick out the plates.

Had it been me chased by someone in a Jag I would have *made sure* that I got the plate numbers.
