    AFAIK that's just the implementation Microsoft itself provides (note that in XP, Microsoft provides plain 20-years-old OpenGL 1.1 that's slower a kid can draw on a sheet of paper). It's all about how the graphics card driver programmers are able to fix that, and they're quite capable.

    Maybe not for the first 6-12 months, but if you think that no game company is going to embrace directX 10, you are mistaken. How many current directX 9.0c only games are there? Like... most on the shelves released within the past 12 months...

    If I were a gaming company, I'd simply switch to OpenGL... it has all of the features of DirectX 10 (via extensions), right there in Windows XP... Works fine in Vista, too.

    we need to ban fruits whose main taste is provided by a substance (Furaneol and Methoxyfuraneol), which is deadly if taken in micrograms. Lets ban strawberry.

    Well, since the strawberries I can buy at the store here lack any taste, they wouldn't be affected by that ban anyways. :)

    The fact remains, however, that in the end, they lost the race, and that would point towards some sort of ultimate inferiority.

    Well, all of those features require much more energy, so I guess the neanderthals were the first to starve to death when there was not enough food available.

    Probably because they cumulate? The trees on earth aren't enough to compensate, it'll probably take hundreds of years to get back to the level we had back then. That's why global warming advocates are also telling people to plant trees.

    Well, none of the EA Sports titles are ported. Other not ported games are:
    • Command & Conquer (except Generals)
    • Battlefield 2164
    • Black & White 2
    • The Godfather
    • Battlefield 1&2
    • All Need for Speed
    • LOTR: The Battle for Middle-Earth 1&2

    This list is just the result of a quick skimming over the EA page, there are lots of others (I'm sorry of any of the above are actually ported, diving through those web pages is pretty complicated). There are a few exceptions to that, but only the most important ones are ported. I didn't say that it's impossible that it will happen, I just said that EA is very hostile to the Mac platform.

    Well, but firing a few engineers and keeping the management that created the problem in the first place would be even worse. At least they really get rid of those that are responsible.

    Uhm, MVC doesn't add anything to the big-O notation. At worst it adds some method calls, but that's it.

    btw, Cocoa uses MVC exclusively, too, and nobody complains about its performance.

    Are Java apps in general just this way on Mac OS X, or are there benefits to be had by switching to a Cocoa Java implementation?

    From my experience, you can't tell wether a Cocoa app is written in Objective C or Java (except in launch time), so there's definitely a difference to SWT.

    Uh, 256kB is a decent amount of Flash. I can't imagine that regular customers of these sets will ever reach that limit.

    For comparison, the HP49G+ has a very similiar CPU and comes with only twice that amount (the HP48G only comes with 64kB and has nearly the same software), but includes a full-blown advanced symbolic manipulation and solving code library competing with Mathematica in some areas.

    Side note: the reason why the iSight demos in Apple keynote addresses look so darn good is that the participants are looking at the iSight camera, and not at the actual screen when they're doing the demo. It's a very subtle shift, but it still matters.

    I know somebody with a MacBook Pro, and when I video chat with her, it looks like she's looking into the camera, when she's actually not. That's probably caused by the camera being so close to the screen. I have a 24" TFT with an iSight on top of it, and the illusion isn't there.

    Uhm, there's no such thing as automated porting of apps to Mac OS X. There are some things the Windows API just doesn't support (sheets is a basic one for instance). Thus, Windows-apps will never look like they're native mac apps, unless you do some actual porting.

    It doesn't comply with GNOME's HIG either, but I would not call it a stretch to say that it runs on GNOME.

    Well, that's the difference between "we have GUI, too!"-Linux and Mac OS X. Merely being able to run an app isn't enough. Even Microsoft knows that, Office for Mac is pretty nice (except for the missing Address Book integration in Entourage).

    Also, there is NeoOffice/J, which is a native Aqua port of an old version of OpenOffice.

    That one looks like you're running in a VNC session or Virtual PC.

    The G5 replacement will be faster than a current iMac, but it'll also be noisier, 2x-3x the price, and with no huge display built-in...

    The days when 20" TFT were considered "huge" are long gone... Especially for professionals.

    Don't forget that those 20" are widescreen, which translates to a much smaller screen space than on a 20" 4:3 TFT.

    Uhm, there's no such concept as "putting an application on the second monitor" on the Mac, since there isn't anything on screen which you could call "the application".

    I personally use three monitors on my Mac, with the menu bar at the center. I don't have any issues with the menu bar distance, since the center monitor is the only one that's really used for work, the others are like auxiliary monitors for windows I currently don't use for work.

    For a system that costs about the same as mindstorms, you get a lot more capability.

    You're kiddding, right? The Mindstorms NXT kit will be sold for $250, while the OrcBoard costs $350 "in limited quantities", without any casing or sensors.

    Casing is a major problem for people that don't have access to the equipment required for PVC modelling.

    Additionally, the Mindstorms controller supports bluetooth communication, which is a very nice feature.

    Agreed. I just started using CoreData, and it's a pretty amazing technology. For instance, take a look at this tutorial. It's a whole working database-based app without writing a single line of code! If you want custom behavior, enhancing is very easy, too.

    Key-Value Observing has revolutionized Cocoa development, most developers just didn't notice (b/c it takes some time to get used to it).

    We have the same law here in my country. That's why a dictionary was invented, which helps you translate the words into the real meaning (and back). For example, <person> was improving the working atmosphere at the office means he/she drank alcohol at work.

    According to a lecture I took last year, this has changed in recent years. Now it's much more important to work on a small set of data at a time, since the processors have large caches. The recursive approach helps to keep the data you're working on inside the cache.

    20 years ago nobody had a cache, so it was an imperative to keep your stack size down.
