    whether you agree with capital punishment or not, you have to agree that the state should not take its power to kill its own citizens very lightly. even if those citizens are scumbags.

    I do oppose embryonic stem cell research, because it creates a demand for dead babies, which I have a huge moral problem with.

    by that logic organ donation creates a demand for dead adults.

    i think ben was in fact at peace with his actions. hell, he probably sat on the island with hurley for a thousand years doing just that.

    i think ben realized after his 'conversion' that he had never really had any personal relationships that mattered, except with his 'daughter'. even that relationship was pretty screwy. everything else was a means to an end for him.

    likewise, his 'daughter', who he was drawn to in the 'purgatory' (as rousseau's kid), hasn't 'converted' either. if i were ben i wouldn't have gone to the church either, not without her.

    i'm figuring he's going to stay until he can make sure the one person he ever really cared about in the real world can come with him.

    this is why the doctrine of reasonable prevention would have gone so much farther here. the oil industry doesn't have much experience drilling these super-deep wells, they certainly have no experience dealing with problems in them.

    going down there with a known not-properly-functioning BOP and untested cementing was blatantly stupid. now they have to try to fix the problem with stuff that's essentially untested and could make the whole thing worse.

    not exactly sure how much experience the us government has running and fixing oil wells.

    not that they could fuck it up more than BP, but it aint like the navy runs a crew of underwater wildcatter frogmen. frogcats?

    how, exactly, do you tax people who don't get their pets shots, or spayed, or neutered? some sort of pet 'secret police'? stop and ask to see the papers of everybody out walking their dog?

    it's far, far easier to apply a tax to the cost of getting shots etc. than it is to apply a tax to not getting them.

    not when my children are better than you! my 16 month old is already doing calculus. it's in the form of spaghetti, so it takes some interpreting, but it's there.

    you still don't seem to understand the job of solicitor general. it isn't up to her which arguments to take in front of the supreme court.

    in a similar manner, a federal judge is bound by SCOTUS precedent, even if they think it's lousy.

    a candidate's record is important to judge them by, but you have to be able to discern things.

    forget about it. it's a red herring either way. as solicitor general it's her job to argue cases even if she doesn't like the line of argument at all.

    judging her over the arguments she brought to the court is half-assed.

    actually it's been reported that SA has been highballing the estimates for decades. which makes sense, as OPEC quotas are based on stated reserves - the more you claim to have in reserves the more you can pump and sell and the more money you make.

    it's in every OPEC country's best interest to overstate their reserves. and of course, nobody outside of aramco is allowed to actually independently verify those numbers.

    i'm waiting on it too. however, it is a bit complicated. certainly the arguments of the first party are absolutely not gonna fly (throw away the whole doctrine of selective incorporation?), but then again the council arguing for the government in chicago certainly did a horrible job at oral arguments.

    'many places' being states i assume? because currently the 2nd amendment only really applies to the federal government. states can, under the US constitution, abridge the right to bear arms all they want to.

    there is a decision being appealed to the scotus on that issue - but really the court has to decide on it to make it official.
