If a magazine or website is going to be fair and open about their reviews, it would be nice if there was a bit of disclosure about perks/payoffs that they are getting. I have seen (can't remember the site) situations where EMPLOYEES of game houses have written full reviews and palmed them off on gaming sites as a unbiased review.. only to be caught out by some alert reader. Maybe too, people are going to hold back on reviews that shitcan bad products for fear of litigation (PetsWhoreHouse etc...). It does seem that a lot of big game sites tend to get more sychophantic as the years go on.. especially to the big software houses.. is that because of either a) Advertising Revenue (Biting the hand that feeds) or b) the junkets get better..
It gets harder to find objective reviews ESPECIALLY in print magazines..
Umm, If you are one of the few who actually PAY for their games, you might want to find out a bit about it, if its got a crap interface/buggy code etc.. If a review holds back on its opinions in regard to major playability issues coz the company has sent the guy to Aspen or whatever then its nothing more than a commercial... Besides, I always have some friend who ends up beta testing or just buys the game, and that ends up being the best review I ever get. but does that guy check the reviews before he forks out his hard earned dough or does he go into the shops and buy every $50 game on the wall??
that The same people condemning these DoS attacks participated in the great KPMG/. DoS???
why is one correct and the other one not???
With what everyone was doing to the KPMG site there was malice and forthought of the result (i.e. a DoS on their website because they prohibited deep linking)
Slashdot... double standards a-plenty!.. thats why I love it...
The intent of Alstons bill is to shutdown sites WITHIN Australia or by Australians that publish content which is deemed inappropriate as per australia's publishing laws. This is not always a bad thing..
They do not filter incoming content, They just shut down those sites within the countries borders that, in effect are breaking the law (Kiddy porn etc..).. How effective that is, well, thats another debate. But at least this way there is some accountablilty for what these people put on the net. There has (to date) been no policlitical/anti govt. sites closed down that I am aware of.
How hard is it to poll XFS for fonts? KDE and StarOffice (5.2) don't seem to poll for the fonts - I can't use any of my lots of fonts! I want TTF on my desktop! (I don't know enough right now to go code hacking...)
Not being a smart arse/troll or whatever... I presume you have looked up the info on XFS.. There is a TrueType font howto at linux.org. I found that when I cut over my Windows TTF fonts, there were a few duds and this (when creating mkfontdir etc...) that stopped the WHOLE directory from working... Try cutting your fonts over in small chunks... (Alphabetize in seperate dirs if need be)... should work ok.. KDE & Star Offfice are fine with TTF's KOffice works with em ok.... And my desktop uses TTF's
Get the picture: no one wants your bias. Bias makes for unreliable, untruthful, and slanted news.
Nice Troll!!.
Where do you go for an unbiased opinion??
Any site/magazine that has commercial sponsorship will inevitably become biased(either overtley or by stealth).
If you have Product X buying a full page spread in your magazine and you find that said product was a heap of crap...you would either drop the review or gloss over the faults... Most Mags/Sites tend to do this (especially once they have become more than a fanboy mag...).. Its called not biting tha hand that feeds you....
Kudos to those who will though.....
PLUS...This IS slashdot....

Ah... you're on of those "I have an email address but don't send me anything ever" people...
Redhat has done wonders for the industry. But I need ONE vendor to contact for ALL my issues who has deep expertise in all aspects of the software. I can't go to Linuxcare or any third party. I want to be on Linux...but I am running these systems on Sun and M$ for just this reason
So M$ will support ALL problems with all apps you have running on Windows???
Me:"Hi I'm Having Trouble Launching and I'm getting a VXD conflict, I Think its windows' problem" M$ Support:"Try Contacting support line , it could be their problem"
Handball the call for ANYTHING once you have installed a Non-MS app...
It seems to me that the responses to this article can be summed up like this:
When I have a problem with a machine at work and they(work) pay the $200 to M$, they solve the problem, but when I try to get help for my Linux distro from IRC i get told to RTFM
Come on!! Get a grip on reality..If you are using Linux in a Commercial/Professional envioronment you would be a member of something like Redhat's RHN or similar..
If you need to you can get Tech Support from the Professional Distro Companies at a cost... Just like M$..
Just coz you're dicking around with Linux at home and you don't wanna pay anything, doesnt mean that good tech support for it does not exist....
If you go to IRC... you get an IRC solution... for M$ & Linux.... And you deserve the result
Theres nothing stopping the same for the kb. Tab is completion. Always. (None of this ? Cisco crap). What Cisco crap are you talking about... The routers with the current IOS's have tab as a autocomplete... "?" is just for help on the next command (logical I would have thought).. Wouldn't it be nice if apps let you see the syntax WHILE you were typing instad of having to go --? or whatever and scrolling back up thru the output???..hmmmm...???

What's more, Oracle holds 14 international security evaluations. IBM DB2 has none. Microsoft SQL Server has only one.
<sarcasm>I bet it was worthwhile getting Upper Volta, Tonga, New Zealand and other hokey 2 bit countries to do the evalutaions...</sarcasm>
AND it doesnt say what the results of these evaluations were.. could have been "we cracked it...."
Mine says something similar, but apparently there are currently tensions in Vietnam.... I think I'll stay away this holidays!
