Thats common datacenter pratice. Thier SOP dicates the number of tapes in rotation and the length of that rotation period. As the tapes come back around in thier rotation the old data gets overwritten. A backup tape will likely be used about 100 times or so before it begins too loose integrity.
ACLs may not neccassarily apply to an account hardcoded into an application (be it a router or a website).
You can easily, through code, create an account that would not show up in any ACL lists and may not even be logged. Once its compiled there is no way of knowing until someone speaks up like Cisco did.
At least they relseased a patch.
For the tin-foil-hat crowd out there. As a developer there are times when I will code in a superuser account during development to test different software features. It is a responsibility of the developer to remove the account and any other debugging code before making the final build. However programmers are human and are prone to mistakes.
I would be more inclined to belive that it was something that was either missed on accident or was maliciously added not by Cisco but one of thier developers independantly, for whatever reason. Im betting either way whoever it was is no longer employed at Cisco.
It wont be as simple as that, the combination of lawsuits and seeding the P2P networks with fake rips and misnamed files created such a noise ratio it was not uncommon to download 10 or more copies of a particular song before you find a good one.
Many used kazza and others for the free music, I would bet many more used it for the convience. People dont want to go to stores and wait in line and not even be able to sample the music ahead of time.
Give users convience and service and they will gladly pay for it. If the P2Ps attempts to re-dist the songs I belive the music industry would be more warrnted than before to make the attcks on P2P that they did before. If they are proivding that service themselvs at a reasonable price.
The real question is will they ever get to that level of service offering and would they really charge a reasonable price?
Great post, I've known about the progression of a commodity for sometime but never thought about it in a software sence. I've thought for a long time that MS is heading down the IBM road.
Hopefully they will learn thier lesson that IBM did, money is in innovation not stagnation. A previous poster mentioned that IBM takes less profit on the 80billion of revenue but thats simply becasue they put so much more of it back into the future of the compnay as opposed to sitting in a bank account.
And I have to say Im quite glad Microsoft has proven that its not that good at expanding into new markets. Though I expected as much, partners, vendors and customers are going to be less like to help a company expand when they know how preadatory the company entering the market is.
very true, but just becasue its done in a virtual supercomputer at first does not mean that there is not a cost associated with that activity. The supercomputers just reduce the cost.
I would bet the pre-edc/discovery stage is not as cost intensive as the post-edc phases and all the testing and trials required. I know for some drug companies its almost impossible to even determine the cost of the pre-edc phases as a single drug is isolated very late in the discovery process and was orignally part of some other batch project that may have stemed from somewhere else alltogher. Many phrama companies just dump $$$ into the pre-edc phase hoping that somethign will come out how much is actually spent during those phases is something much more diffcult to determine.
Even with the technological advances larger drug compaines can still spend literally billions of dollars before even selling the first pill off the production line.
The cost of advertising of a newly approved drug is a VERY SMALL drop in the bucket compared to the cost to develop and push a drug through clinical trials and all the red tape the FDA has constructed.
Your typical drug, say Viagria, starts as a base compund. Normally there are over 100,000 or more base compounds that are tested and researched before even one compound is found that would be useful to market (and this is before the inital FDA filing, AKA Pre-EDC). Once the compound is registered with the FDA and goes under intensive developemnt there is much more money spent.
On average development costs for a single drug can esclate into billions of dollars. Of course, if successful, a single good drug can bring enough profit to keep a drug company operating for years before the patent protection goes away.
The reason drugs outside of the US are much cheaper is mainly thanks to the FDA. The FDA has massive amounts of regulations even after the drug is approved that regulate how a drug is manufactured and handled. These regulations even dictate how the drug company manages and runs its production computer networks and client systems. This of course adds A LOT of overhead when making a drug.
Drugs coming from non FDA regulated sites (this is the kinda stuff you buy super cheap on the net) are much cheaper however knowing what the FDA regulations are and why they are there I feel much safer paying more money for an FDA approved drug which I know will be safe as opposed to a drug made at a non-FDA regulated site which may not meet the standards of saftey we have here in the states.
This is correct, I'm an ex-Convergys employee and still have some info from the company. The Dell support centers were based partly in Orlando, FL and was shut down as it was moved to India.
As another poster mentioned they also closed out thier Compaq call center in Huston right along with a seprate Gateway callcenter in Orlando. Some of this was due to moving to India, other was becasue thier clients became pissed at Convergys for one reason or another.
Heres some other companies that have used convergys at one time or another:
Microsoft Anti-Piracy Hotline Sunbeam Products Palm AMEX Visor
ohh come on you cant forget the Monte Carlo. I agree american sedans are prob the best price/power comprmise and are generally good on mileage (much better than an SUV but of course not as good as a hybrid or 4cyl). Plus you get room to strech your legs (important for us tall folk).
I would consider a hybrid car as my daily driver if they were offered in bigger 2 door or 4 door sedans. I would still keep my turbo internal combustion engine car though for the weekend at the track:-)
true, however having top-down support for the big chief himslef along with the neccassary funds allocation helped make it a relaity.
Of course all this was motivated by the cold war ultimiatley.
We may have gone to the moon eventually however we have never been back since the orignal missions as there has never been a push like that in the past. I would love to see the goverment put some goals on NASA and give them the funding to match.
I went there during the weekend before halloween and they had the fencing up and the first couple yellow steel pylons up already. I knew it was a new coaster but had no idea what it was going to be.
But I considered the fact that CP is prob pretty pissed that they lost thier tallest record so quickly after earning it back so I figured it would be bigger than MF.
We were joking that in 10 years or so we will see a 600 or 700 ft drop coaster. WHo would ride one of those?
I have ridden coasters in Orlando, Tampa, Cali, Vegas, Cedar Point, Kings Dominon, BlackPool England, and numerous other places.
Cedar Point is by far the most kick ass coaster park in the world. Yes blackpool has about 2 times the coaster but af for sheer speed fun and pure fear Cedar Point is it.
Itll take at least 2 days to hit everything anyhow.
Yeah but think about DefCon, yeah some dumb stuff goes on there but do you see any PC porn?
I mean its not uncommon to see someone attempt to swan dive into the pool from the top of the main lecture hall.
Or maybe see some kid with green hair half naked, passed out and hanging from the chanldier in the ball room. Or the occasional missing ATM machine but come on, MAC Porn?!?!?!?
And the look alike contest? Its akin to that fat old guy in the conrner of GenCon dressed up like sailior moon.
I agree I dont think one can compare the box-office portion of the movie industry with the video game industry unless one breaks it down like so:
Game Industry | Moview Industry | Music Industry Arcades | Theaters | Concerts Game Rental | Movie Rental | ???? Game Purchase | Movie Purchase | Music Purchase
I can think of many uses for such small form factorPCs. In some industrial enviorments it woul dbe good to have such a small form factor as control rooms tend to be very full with so many other consoles the last thing anyone needs is a big honkin PC in there.
Personally I see a lot of potential for Car and boat applications.
Have a small formfactor PC like this mounted in the trunk or under the seat. Hook it to a touchscreen LCD on the dash. With all the multiple plugs on the back one of these MIniComputers could handle multiple tasks.
MP3s DVD playback GPS (for a lot cheaper than other systems) Games Car-Computer interface (for racers and info addicts, interface the cars ECM to the mini computer, normally done through a serial port and you can monitor the cars preformance on the LCD) Also for racers, independant fuel managment. Portalable wireless lan (Lan parties where ever you happen to be, also great for war driving) Hook the computer up to multiple cameras and you can have a log of all drviing activites (parents would love this one) On a boat or Cars with CBs - Scan and record CB and raido conversations, this could also work with the standard FM or XM radio (hear a song you like hit record on the screen and it will be saved as an MP3 for later playback) You could even use the computer to be a lockout point for your alarm system. First you have to de-activate the alarm and then enter a password to get the car to start)
Im sure there are many other things I could use one of these for. Hmm maybe this will be my winter project.
This is very true in a sence, after all most of these things are based on Physics and mathmatics which when written down are mostly just a bunch of odd symbols and numbers (incantations). Using these sytems we create magick so to speak.

For a second there I thought the voice in my head actually won and I was seeing things now.

i love my leather and for the hot days I just have some black towels to match the leather and throw them on the seat.
simple solution
yup over 100 years old as a matter of fact, they made playing cards,
nintendo has also been a taxi service and a love motel at one point.
who knew?
not really, the second day is for re-riding all your favs, over and over and over again :-)
I went there during the weekend before halloween and they had the fencing up and the first couple yellow steel pylons up already. I knew it was a new coaster but had no idea what it was going to be.

I dunno, I think that is kind of an homage to the pranks that happen each yeat at MIT.
That was a prank with a somewhat goofy purpose.
But Mac Porn?
Seriously..
Yeah but think about DefCon, yeah some dumb stuff goes on there but do you see any PC porn?

Havent, though it would be interesting to see what would happen if your tried.
