Cool idea (set-top box which streams video over the net) for pretty cheap, but I'm not 100% sold on it yet.

Also, the $5/month covers multiple TiVos. I have an old Series 1 Sony DirecTiVo and a newer Hughes Series 2 DirecTiVo, and still just pay the $5. Nice.

I scored the Hughes one at Circuit City for $100 a few months ago...didn't even matter that I was already a DirecTV customer (just had to agree to another year on my service agreement).

At my workplace (50k or so, 99% of which are idiots), I've only been able to connect to my e-mail server twice in the last 2 days due to network traffic and server load. That is definitely causing problems, and I know of 3 projects that have been delayed because of it (inability to move around testing data and such). Yes, if they were not idiots, they'd use FTP and so on, but if they were not idiots, the worms wouldn't be a problem in the first place.

I don't know if that translates into millions of dollars, but whatever - it's a pain in the ass and is causing real delays.

...who thinks these windmills look cool? A similar controversy is taking place near where I live (except not in the water), and I don't see the problem. I wouldn't mind having one of these in my yard. Plus I could mount my DirecTV dish on top of it for great reception. :-)

I live in the midwest, where it's really flat and windy pretty much all the time. I bet wind power would really take off here,

I own and use a TiVo for most of my TV viewing. I usually fast-forward through all commercials, unless I catch a glimpse of one that looks good (a preview for an upcoming movie, or one of those funny VW ads), in which case I go back and watch them.

I'd be surprised if the TiVo didn't keep track of that sort of thing.

  22. Re:$3700 for a TUBE TV? on Uber Geeks Holiday Gift Guide · · Score: 1

I haven't seen this 40" XBR, but just last night I was at circuit city, and they were showing an HDTV broadcast of "Touched by an Angel" on the HDTV-capable units. They had the 34" 16:9 Wega on display right next to a similarly sized (a bit bigger, but not much) and priced rear projection...I believe it was a Panasonic. The picture quality was no comparison...the tube was far superior. They may have just had the projection model set up poorly, but the Wega was much, much sharper and brighter.

This TV had a price tag of $3999...I guess the cool aspect ratio makes it more expensive even though the screen isn't as big?

As a side note, you know the picture had to be really fucking good for me to stand there 10 minutes watching "Touched by an Angel".

  25. 160 for ripping, 96 for portable device on What Sounds Better, MP3 or Ogg? · · Score: 1

I usually use 160 to rip CDs for storage on a hard drive. For me, that is the best comprimise for quality & disk space usage. I listen with generic computer speakers (sub & satellites), so I'm not going to be able to tell that much difference anyway.

For my portable device (Samsung Uproar Sprint PCS phone...64MB of space...it was on sale for $100 yesterday, & needed a new phone anyway), I convert them to 96. That way I can get about 1.5-1.75 hours on there, which is more than enough for a run or gym workout (which I believe is the best use for an MP3 device anyway...one without any sort of disk-based media, anyway). And again, with the crappy earbuds, there's not much difference. Of course, if there wasn't software that would convert the mp3s from 160 -> 96 on the fly when uploading it to the phone, it would be too much of a pain in the ass.
