    Government agencies can require it if they give reason. NOT giving it then is a crime. Banks need it because they must tell the IRS how much you've made.

    What happened is the tax office lost power due to a flooded power vault (that they were in the process of waterproofing). I'm not sure if the article states this - I'm in a hurry, so sorry :P

    AT&T plans to go to GSM because EDGE and WCDMA are 3G upgrades from GSM. Also, I can send an SMS to any provider so far, including Cingular and VoiceStream. Just enter the number, and they get the SMS with a return addy of my phone's text message email addy, so they can reply.

    You had to switch because Sprint uses a different technology (CDMA) than AT&T (TDMA).

    It might work. AT&T is starting to do GSM, which is what the Treo uses. Just switch SIMs. Give them a call and hope you live in a GSM service area.

    While I just moderated you +1 Interesting, I had to reply. MiniDiscs need not be recorded in real time no longer. Look at MiniDisc.org's website for NetMD. 4x upwards to 16x now I believe.

    Or stop filtering at all! Google is blocked at my school. So is about everything else except Yahooligans, and this is a senior HS.

    They won't be using GPS. They'll be using triangulation. Heck, only the newest phones have e911, and that, AFAIK, is only activated when 911 is dialed.

    Their World phones will. GSM1900 is only used in the USA (It's EGSM elsewhere). Too bad they don't have GSM here!

    and there are some cool applications. For instance, Nokia is planning a Bluetooth headset piece so there will be no wires connecting cell phone to headset. I can't wait to see that in action.

    First amendment right to freedom of speech, expression, and press. It's not his right to see it, but it's the right of the publisher to publish it. Here in PA, we're being assholes and doing it in a way that gets around that little amendment there.

    TDMA 1900/800: Cingular, AT&T, a few others.
    CDMA 1900/800: Sprint PCS and Verizon.
    iDen: Nextel.
    GSM 1900: Voicestream, AT&T. On most phones, these both work on international GSM.

    We've got local ISPs like that, and I believe a few of the national ISPs are the same. My old dialup got boiught out by EarthLink tho.
