well i used a Windows/Linux Desktop for some time and bought an iBook G4 last year. it took at most a day to get used to the new shortcuts. the missing Windows Start menu was IMO much more problematic
> At least linux will allow you to stop a single service, reconfigure or upgrade it, then restart the service.
Windows can do this too. Exchange 2003SP1 just restarts the Exchange Server and not Windows (well at least once it said everything is OK, on the other server it wanted to restart Win2k3 for some reason), but unfortunatly...
> There should not be a reason to reboot a server to apply an Internet Explorer patch.... IE is tied into Explorer witch acts as shell and cant be patched while its running... so you have to reboot
if you have Norton antivirus, it causes a huge delay in FF (and every Mozilla App) Startup time, because it scans every.jar and.js File in the FF/TB/Mozilla directory.
if you exclude the FF directory from being scanned it starts faster
> You can't assume that your customer has either Java or.NET installed (trust me from experience, they don't).
very soon most Windows User will have.Net Installed. its included in WinXP SP2 and i wouldnt be surprised if they add it to Win2k SP5.
anyway... all new Windows PCs will ship with.Net installed (for some reason only 1.0 and not 1.1) in a vew weeks when OEMs start to ship XP SP2 Systems
here in Austria we have to pay a licence for every Part that is theoreticaly capable of watching TV. it doesnt matter if you watch TV on it or just play DVDs. as long as it has a Tuner inside you have to pay ins Austria. so including a Tuner by default isnt the best idea
and that is to kill the entire Office Suite. Even if there is a far superior Word alternative out there people will still buy/get Office for Outlook/Excel/Access/Powerpoint and since they'll get Word with Office "for free" they wont need to buy an other Word.
Or do you know anyone who actually bought (not pirated) Word allone? (the only place where its "allone" is in the Works Suite with MS Works, Encarta and some other apps) but its been a long time since i've seen Word outsite MS Office
While i cant be without my 5 Button Mouse some others are confused by those buttons. I've seen people middle-Click on something and nothing happens (that was with a 3-Button Mouse). or using 2 Buttons at once (left & Middle) and stuff like this.

why dont you just Slipstream (instructions are for XP, but they are the same on Win2000) SP4 into the Windows CD?
the current (nightly) doesnt, but it happened on FireFox 0.9.1 (tested it myself) and since 0.9.2 only fixed the shell: exploit it should be vulnerable too.
the user didnt have to click
there is a thread in mozillazine about a page that showed (its now something different) the Install me Dialog over and over again until the user clicks "Install".
this will be fixed in 1.0 (and is allready in the current nightly) but this was just as scary as those ActiveX horror on some pages
(and again: thanks mozilla for fixing those stuff as fast as they do)
is it really so hard to get to work, turn the PC on, get something to eat/drink/whatver and then go to your PC to check Emails after it finished booting? (If your PC has something to do in the night (eg run as server for someone) than thats something different)
btw: there is no way a modern PC requires 5 minutes to boot

There is an error message when use windowsupdate with Firefox

Dont rely on that... i've done the same on my 75GXP and after 6 Months or so it failed again.

most PCs are turned on in the morning and off when they go home, so login scripts arent that useless

if this is important to you, set the Flag
blocking-aviary1.0 to "?" (not "+") in Bugzilla.
if its important enough to the devs they may grant the blocking and it'll get fixed for 1.0 final
if Thunderbird could *fully* replace outlook (not Express)...

there is one difference between Picasso changing hist Pictures and Lucas changing the movie:
Picasso's original Pictures would be lost, but the original Movie could still be out there.

you dont have to remove your profile. just delete the firefox folder (or uninstall it) and reinstall the new version.
>Slashdot works better with Internet Explorer than with Firefox... Check
btw: i'Ve seen the messed up tables at work several times but not even once at home (same Firefox Version, same OS) so it may be a profile issue
microsoft allready offers Free Update CDs (but its from Feb 04 so not that usefull for current exploits. i expect them to offer a free XP SP2 CD once its out
