To you and all the others that are saying I don't care about being monitored, what exactly in my post made you decide that I didn't care about being monitored? I stated a fact, or according to some, a lie made by the administration. I did not say it was right or wrong. I don't see my opinion anywhere in my post.
What the headline calls domestic spying is actually the tapping of phone calls to and from people inside the United States to and from someone outside the United States who is a known terrorist or member of Al Queda. It is not, as some believe, the government wiretapping phone calls internal to the United States.
I tell my boss my sister's phone number and tell him that it is only for extreme emergencies. I give my sister the phone number of the hotel I'll be staying at with very specific instructions. If I get a phone call while I'm on vacation, I expect there to be someone dead or on their death bed. If I can find an Internet cafe where I'm at, I may connect to my Gmail or Yahoo account to email a picture or two to a small group of friends, but other than that, computers and phones don't exist.
the truly more popular artists receive the money according to sales
According to RIAA logic, the money should go to the artists whose work didn't sell as much.
You see, according to the RIAA, the lack of sales in recent years is directly due to piracy. This means that those artists who didn't sell as much obviously were pirated more. Give more of the money to those who were pirated more. That would be the ones who didn't sell as much. Q.E.D.
I have a few owls that frequent my back yard. While they may not be mimicking songs, they each have their own tone and rhythm to their hoots such that I can recognize three different owls out there. I've heard them all at once. Just what I needed, an owl concert to keep me up all night.
Back when I had a girlfriend living with me, she had a parakeet. She taught this parakeet the Andy Griffith theme song and the Addams Family theme song. They were pretty accurate renditions, too.
Okay, the article says this is the first time a nonhuman mammal has been shown to do this as opposed to any other animal, but I figure if a bird can do this, surely there are mammals smart enough to do it too. Doesn't seem much like news to me.
It didn't exist when I checked it. I got a 404 error. I didn't get modded up, that's my karma bonus. I didn't see your post or I wouldn't have posted it.
I knew this sounded familiar. This one is from back in July of 2005 so I suppose it may be worth a repost. The CNN article linked in the earlier post no longer exists.
I thought something with the Slashdot web code didn't agree with some part of my newly installed Firefox 2.0. I was looking at a comment and wanted to see the parent. When I clicked it, I got a blank comment. Now I see this story and that explains it.

Analogy, the word looks like it's the study of...nevermind.
Anyway, since this analogy is already out there, let me give it my best shot. You're voting for either a hard hit with a bat or a slap in the face. Of course you prefer neither so you vote third-party which is to let you go with no harm. The problem is that there are a much larger number of people voting for either the bat or the slap. Setting you free with no harm has virtually no chance of winning. If the bat wins, you're screwed. If the slap wins, you're MUCH better off than the bat.
I agree with what you're saying about why vote for getting hit at all, or why vote for either of the major parties, but when that much harm can come if the other side wins, many people would be hard pressed to not help the lesser of the two evils. Not saying it's right, just the way it is.
I voted today and the only option was paper ballots where you fill in the circle completely. I see no confusion with this and can't understand why they don't do this everywhere. With all the different new voting machines, you've got technical glitches, improperly trained people and people who have no idea how to make their selections because they're not "computer people". I understand it's not complicated but I've had trouble explaining some very basic concepts to people, not because they couldn't understand, but because they didn't want to.
Their SMTP gateway should have detected a server outside of their network was trying to send a message with an internal email address as the sender and blocked it. It never would have worked in my company. Plus if someone in my company received a message like this which would have had an external email address as a sender, someone would have called me right away. I then would have blocked the site, blocked similar emails, seen who was sent a similar message and spoke with them to find out who visited the site and scanned and/or reloaded all the recipients' computers anyway.
If it was sent by a computer internally, I think I could see that also (I'll have to check on that) and get that computer/employee taken care of.
We had a similar social engineering test recently. A small number of people but still more than I'd like followed the instructions in the email, a similar number notified me or another employee that could help them make sense of the message, and I had the email blocked and the ISP of the sender on the phone within minutes. It was only after that I was informed about the test. I know I passed. I'm sure a few others failed.
Your technology has to protect your organization to a certain point but your employees MUST be trained to not fall for this kind of stuff. Unfortunately, some will never learn because they think it's IT's job to keep this stuff from happening. Why did I choose this career again?:-/
That would be the problem. I could understand how not seeing the Firefly series would make the movie not so interesting. For me, the series by itself was okay, but not great. The movie by itself was okay, but not great. If you've seen the series, the movie makes much more sense and I think they did a great job in the movie of explaining a lot of what happened in the series. There were several "Ah-HA!" moments for me where I now understood what was going on in the series, which probably made my view of the movie that much better. While I'm glad I watched both the series and the movie, taking 12 hours or so to make the experience worthwhile seems a bit excessive. Of course, it took Babylon 5 four seasons to do the same.
I agree completely, but be quiet! Stop giving away the secret!
I'm considering heading down for two weeks in January but I can't decide between San Pedro or Placencia. Isn't it quite expensive to live there compared to other Central American countries or is it much better once you get away from the tourist areas?
You had me up until that part. The voter should be able to SEE the paper copy and verify it is accurate without being able to touch it. It is then whisked away, dropped down, or whatever onto a roll, stack or whatever so poll workers have a way to verify the machine counts with paper counts. If they are given receipts, this would provide proof they voted a certain way. Voters should not be given a copy since this opens the door to people being paid or intimidated to vote a certain way. Other than that point, I agree with your post.
In New York State, it's harassment to call somebody 2 or more times between the hours of (I think) 11pm and 8am.
Yeah, so all you Slashdotters out there, don't call more than once, but at least call once. How many Slashdotters are there anyway? Just one page per Slashdotter should be plenty methinks.
I did this once back before my employer would let me take the time to build a real spam filter. Previously it was just SMTP antivirus that I had tweaked so it could block around 75% of the spam that was coming in over a year ago but had to be continually manually tweaked as spammers changed their messages. I had built it up slowly as the spam filter had gotten worse over the previous several years so no one really noticed how bad it really was. They told me not to bother, that I should not block spam at all. Okay. I turned it off. The complaints started rolling in immediately. They then allowed me the expense of setting up a REAL filter.
On the subject of what would happen if Spamhaus' domain gets taken down, I use Spamhaus as one of several RTBLs. If they go down, I may see a slight increase in spam. I'll see if I can plug their IP in so I don't even see that. I'm sure a number of companies could see a massive increase but I'm sure it will only be a blip on the radar as they will likely find another way to get Spamhaus or another service within a few days.
Given that the second part of that phrase is "Fruit flies like a banana", I think that's a pretty accurate translation. If the fruit flies part is tranlated in the same way, it would come back as "There are types of flies, called "Fruit Flies" that enjoy eating bananas." Seems right to me.;-P
I just feel like we're at risk having some rather critical information exported to other countries for processing where our laws and regulations do not necessarily apply.
Too late. Your personal credit information is already there. I had a problem getting a credit report from one of the credit reporting agencies. When I called them to be sure they took care of the problem, the phone was answered by someone with such a heavy Indian accent I could barely understand him. The first question out of his mouth was "What is your social security number?" I wrote to my senator and congressman and state's attorney general (Republican AND Democrat). They all say that it is perfectly legal for credit reporting agencies to send our information out of the country and that there is no more risk from Indian companies than from American companies. I disagree and it pisses me off but there is absolutely nothing I can do except tell my congresscritters my thoughts and vote accordingly. There's nothing I can do to prevent the companies from accumulating this information on me and shipping it out of the country.
The question is why are there more polling calls than before?
I think it's because they actually USE the Do Not Call list as their source for phone numbers to call. The best bet is to just make sure your number never gets out there by making sure it's unpublished or only use a cell phone. I know not everyone can use only a cell phone for family or emergency reasons. The biggest irritation to me is that a landline phone company will CHARGE you for them to not publish your information. Doesn't make sense to me, but that's the way it is.
I don't ordinarily reply to Anonymous Cowards with attitude problems but here goes:

I just pulled out my USB flash drive and my ruler. My current, standard-sized flash drive is 7cm X 2cm X 1cm. One extra cm, 14% longer, doesn't seem that big. Or did I miss something?
You notice one little question at the end there? The one that said "Or did I miss something?" If you had one single ounce of social ability, you could say, "You missed the fact that not everyone has that size USB drive. Some people have USB drives that are half that size." Instead you fly off calling me pathetic and a moron.

I lie to exit polls.
I hate the way the major news organizations try to make their polls the news so I do my part to make sure they are wrong.
This is why I keep all my money in gold bullion strapped into my underwear.
But what happens when a woman discovers your default password and makes her way into your underwear and leaves you with no money?
