This search history thing will likely be smart enough to create your bookmarks for you, just by noticing what you search for and what results you click on.

An anti-corporate culture (like here on /.) doesn't have to be pro-governmnet. It the case of government provided internet access -- the cure is worse than the disease.

  8. Keep Gov out of it. on Is Cheap Broadband UnAmerican? · · Score: -1

I don't want some government agency handling all the internet traffic.

Do you want the government to be managing all the printing presses? Do you want the government to have managed the printing presses 100 years ago?

The internet is the communication platform of the future. Radio, print, tv -- all are/will be re-invented through the internet. It will be the primary vehicle for every citizen to communicate and be informed.

Do you really want Uncle Sam in charge of that? Do you trust them that much? I sure as hell don't. The potential for abuse is incredible. If the MPAA/RIAA/FBI/CIA/whichever interest with enough influence to press a button any make website inaccessable, don't you think they would?

The problem isn't not enough government, the problem is too much government. Thanks to historical monopolies granted by government licensing schemes , there are exactly two broadband entry points into our home: cable and phone. That's it. Two.

No wonder prices won't come down.

But going from a two-provider service to a single-provider service is NOT the answer. One, service will suck because there will be no reason to improve service (like any bureaucracy) and two, like I said, the certainty of for political abuse.

For example, let's use pornography as an example.

If cities in the southern bible belt start providiing municiple wifi service, and stipulating that they will become the single-provider in the area, how long do you think it will be before religous conservative interest groups start applying political pressure to block traffic to pornographic web site to "protect the community." After all, it is a city-owned, taxpayer funded network.

That's just an obvious example. How many subversive or anti-status-quo web sites will just quietly become available?

How much easier will it be for law enforcement to your monitor traffic if the provider is just another government agency?

If you value freedom, you should definitely oppose the government takeover of the Internet Service Provider industry.

How about going in the opposite direction and actually have LESS government involved -- stop granting local monopolies to cable and telephone companies, and let service providers try to offer a good service at a good price.
