  1. Re:Not really. on Nader Off Virginia Ballot · · Score: 1
You also have all the little or low-population states who, perhaps, get more than their fair share of electoral votes. The minimum number of electoral votes allocated to a state is 3. So, states such as Alaska, Montana, Wyoming, DC, North and South Dakota, and Vermont each gets three votes, regardless of population. Is that fair? In a sense, each voter in such small states has control over a larger fraction of an electoral vote than does a voter in a large state, such as California.

Yes, smaller states residents have control over a larger fraction of the electoral votes. However it is still so small that it isn't like a small state resident has a big advantage over a large state resident. Plus if the electoral college was disbanded and just a simple majority were instituted we would have campaigns centered around small population centers. New York, Chicago and Los Angeles combined population out weighs Wyoming, Vermont, Alaska, North and South Dakota, Delaware, Montana, Rhode Island, Hawaii, New Hampshire, Maine, Idaho, Nebraska, West Virginia, New Mexico, Nevada and Utah combined. See Shape of Days about some reasons to keep the electoral college. Basically it strikes a balance between equal representation for all people and equal representation for all states.
  2. You aren't skimping everything on Northface University - Computer Science in Half the Time? · · Score: 1

I checked this out since Northface is close to my house. However I decided that it wasn't for me, I am more of a CIS type guy then CS. I work full-time during the day. I recall, and checked to make sure that you have to take psychology, philosophy, and other classes. This one of the first things I looked into, is this a trade like school, or is it really trying to cram a 4 year degree in two years. I'll admit it is probably more technical skill oriented than your traditional 4 year, but its not completely skimping on the liberal arts.

I think that part of it is that there is less chance for work and social life at Northface. It might be something you don't want to sacrifice, but some people do. I have a full load at the U of U this fall, in the CIS degree program. A typical year (two semesters) at the U of U where I am involves being in class for about 15 hours a week for ~32 weeks (~16 a semester). I am told I should have 30 hours of homework studying outside of class but I haven't had to do that much work for good grades personally. Compared if I was at Northface I would have 47 weeks of school in a year, class would be 8 hours a day M-F. I don't recall is the outside of class expected time/work is explained on the site. However even if the each week of school were equal between the two that would mean that I was getting the same as 6 semesters at the U from Northface.

In theory it could be possible to do the classwork to satisfy a 4 year degree in 2 years. You would just have to have average a little over 20 hours a semester and go fall spring AND summer. So if you don't like it, don't deride it merely on the basis of the fact that they have concentrated the school work down to two years as the standard way of doing things.

Case in point with their hardware I have had 3 different Apple computers now and no problems, my friend has owned two, one had constant inexplicable problems the other is a new 15" AlBook that is waiting till summer break from school to go in for the white spots problem.

My family, friends and I have owned probably two dozen or so different PCs over the years that have had Windows 95 through XP on them, and since I am the default tech support person, I know that none of these computers have had a consistent problem with Quicktime, at least enough to raise the issue with me (which it only takes one movie file they are trying to watch to cause a crash twice, easy to do if they want to see something). I know that on most of those machines when I have used them and had a media choice I always go with Quicktime cause it consistently seemed to be the best compression to quality, and the best at not crashing the system (where as Real Player and Windows Media Player tended to be more buggy). That is just my own experience with it, but as I said, it seems like for some people they just can't catch a break for no apparent reason with Apple, and others have no problems at all.
