  1. Das pr0n? on Everyone Hates UMD · · Score: 0

I bring this up for legitimate reasons. Well, mostly. I have seen that porn is available on UMD, but how widespread (no pun intended) is it? Although I consider UMD to have been a pretty stupid idea to begin with, for those who have a stake in it, it seems like this could have benn one way to save the format. It may be too late at this point, though. And I really don't see Sony officially embracing this, either. I hear one of the big reasons Betamax died was because they wouldn't allow porn on it. I'm not sure if that's true or not, and I don't have the time to go look it up because I'm going to go download some porn right now.

While I agree with the parent's sentiment and those in other posts about this story being irrelevant, is there any evidence that Sony was behind this? If not, then the Sony bashing has officially gotten out of hand, and the parent has no business being modded 'Insightful'. You can count me in with the crowd that's not happy with Sony these days, but c'mon. There are plenty of solid things that we can shit all over Sony for, but the knee-jerk accusations aren't gonna cut it. Or at least, they shouldn't. I must be new here.

My favorite part of the "retraction" was this (emphasis not mine):

While it's true that I did not check the drive of the second AR laptop, I thought both laptops were showing the same thing and saw no need to investigate the second seemingly duplicate setup.

Yeah, we can't have journalists wasting any of their time doing things like investigating facts. Why would they have two identical setups side-by-side anyway? Wouldn't that warrant some kind of further study? As the original poster implied, Ulanoff saw no need to investigate further because he was too excited at having "caught" Sony doing something bad. Can we get Ulanoff a job at one of the major newspapers, or possibly in the Bush administration? Seems like he'd fit right in with those groups since they're pretty good at doing half-assed work and pushing their agendas.

If this was Sony's big coming-out party for Blu-Ray I could understand this having been a big deal in the first place, but it wasn't -- it was just a party for the 10th anniversary of the Vaio line. All this was was another excuse for the anti-Sony Fanboys to have yet another opportunity to bash Sony. I'm less than thrilled over the price of the PS3 and some of Sony's other moves, but this is ridiculous.

If his films were half as long as they are they might be decent, but making them overly long with a bunch of FX doesn't automatically make them great and important.

I always get confused on what exactly happened when, but the announcement that the transfer was underway was made in June of '01, and the HP-Compaq merger was announced in September of '01. Either way, the sale of Alpha was most likely a factor in the HP-Compaq mess.

  14. Re:But... eh? on Sun Open-Sourcing UltraSPARC Design · · Score: 1

I don't work for Sun and never have, but you're absolutely correct on the point about not using synthesis alone to design a CPU. To get things like the die size and performance that one wants out of a chip like this, synthesized Verilog is not sufficient, and custom design has to come into play. It's somewhat analagous to assemby vs. high-level language -- if you want stremlined code that might take more design time, you go with assembly. If you want something that's quicker but not as efficient (but still good enough), you go high-level. Maybe not the best analogy, but hopefully it will suffice :)

Verilog design and synthesis is commonly used, however, in smaller scale digital designs like ASICs. There is still physical design work that has to be done, but it's not as intensive as laying out custom FETs like in a big-ass CPU.

But there's only one Kernel! Well, except that there isn't. There's the unstable series. The stable series. Older stable series that are actively maintained. Other branches like -ac.
