  1. I'm not so sure... on Economist's Take On Open Source Development · · Score: 3, Interesting

I doubt government funds could be appropriated in this fashion. Instead what will happen is this would be treated like any other government contract. Companites, rather then individuals would compete, and skill/quality would be low on the list of requirements.

I am a big open source advocate where I work, and I feel the Apache model has the most merit. Of course projects such as Apache only really succede when they are large enough to attact a large number of developers and companies to support it. As with any open source projects, the vast majority of ASF's projects fail, mainly do to lack of intrest. But they come out with the ocasional gem.

Wait no, this wont work. You need to have a story to be able to patent it. Soon all that will be on the air is reality TV. Noooo!

Well I shouldnt be too surprised. I just received and installed my copy of Civ IV today, and after the 2 disk install process, the game is unable to start as it cannot find the cd that is in my drive. If I am unable to make this work, it will just be going back to the store, which is a shame as I have been waiting for this game for quite a while.

The most amusing part about it is the error dialog has a link to their site. The link goes to a blank page.

Actually what Rambus patented was components of DDR SDRAM. They then used this as leverage to try to force the other DRAM makers to pay them royalities to ofset the extreme cost of their own product, RDRAM. The DRAM makers (expically the asian ones) told them to go to hell, and DDR became the de facto standard. Also, Intel had some shady dealings as they tried to push their systems to use only RDRAM, mainly because Intel held stock in Rambus at the time. Fortunatly for Intel they were smart enough to realize they cannot push the market around, and dropped RDRAM.

This is why I never use my bank card for anything other then the ATM or emergencies. If someone commits fraud on my bank card, my bank account will be empty until I can get it sorted out with the bank. I know people that have had this happen and it has taken weeks for them to get any money at all, even from their direct deposit paychecks.
Using the credit card get around this, because if I see bad charges on it, I can call up the credit card company and dispute the charges before I have to pay the bill.
