I've been listening to Buzz Out Loud (CNet podcast) and most of the hosts are in San Fran. They have all complained regarding AT&T's service on the show. I also have a former roomate who lives out there and while the service isn't too bad, he knows exactly when he'll lose service in the field. So someone's not doing their job with that network, in my opinion.

Columbus Ohio seems to be pretty decent. I was down in Gretna, VA doing some work and while I had a STRONG 3g signal, it felt as if there was a dialup modem connected to the internet.

    Serial ain't dead yet.

I was in an Apple store here a few days ago - probably for the second time ever. At any rate, an Apple-salesperson (don't know the "official lingo") talked to me and my wife for a while. I mentioned how thin the ipod touch devices were - and he showed me a video on how Apple redesigned their equipment to utilize the new (non-quick-changeable) battery technology.

His impression was that Apple actually manufactures the batteries. I didn't believe him, since I figured Apple probably wouldn't be the best at doing that. They might be better at giving a physical spec to a manufacturer and letting them figure out the hard parts.... So, who's right? Does Apple truly make their own batteries, or are they manufactured third-party?

We all love honeypots and whatnot, but those things need to come well after patching, configuration management, removing/pruning user administrative permissions, and controlling which software you allow, and strong authentication enforcement. This doesn't have to cost a lot of money.

Actually, doing all of these things does cost money - you need to have someone hired on that can do all of these things, and you have to pay them a salary.

In the long term, it's not a lot of money. But short term thinking appears to be taking over in this economy. Especially if there's no immediate threat deemed by Management in not having basic safeguards in place.

I was wondering: How can this attack be carried out if the external web management is turned off? From the article:

Note: The exploit can only be used directly from outside your network over the internet if you have enabled remote Web GUI management in the Administration tab. As immediate action please disable the remote Web GUI management. But that limitation could be easily overridden by a Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSFR) where a malicious website could inject the exploit from inside the browser.

The Shashdot blurb does state "The linked page notes that a fix is being rolled out (build 12533) and gives firewall rules to thwart the attack if the fix is not available yet for a particular device." but that statement doesn't curb a lot of the "The Sky is FALLING!" reactions....

Basically, I would NEVER allow remote web management of a device if it's on the internet. I believe the default for DD-WRT is to disable it as well, so you'd have to go in and tell the device that you want to enable this feature. All in all, I think for most users, this issue is a non-issue.

Funny you say that about the mustangs - given that there's usually rivalry between camaro and mustang owners, I have to throw this out there. My roomie years ago had a 94 GT Convertible - nothing fancy, but was a fun car. The same timeframe I had a 95 Z28. I found the Z28 to be much more comfortable for the driver, since you sat lower and the seat rails went back further, allowing me to stretch out my legs (6'3") without cramping. The Mustang, unfortunately, doesn't slide back far enough for me to feel comfortable that my knees aren't inches from the dash. Even the newer ones tend to have this arrangement, and I'm not sure whether people just don't mention it or all people shorter than 6'0 are the only ones buying the Mustang.

I do like the way the newer Mustang and Camaro look - haven't sat in the new Camaro; don't want to be tempted to buy one - even though I consider that kind of car a money sink from a reliability standpoint. (The Camaro in particular; have no firsthand experience with the Mustang.)
