Some people I know would be rightly pissed if people were opening their doors, police or not.
See, once you move from a rural area to a bigger city, you start to get upset as thieves always seem to break into your car and steal anything of value. So, in order to not have to pay for another window or fix up a lock, they'll just leave the car unlocked with no valuables inside.
I think ultimately that leaving the doors unlocked is probably a smarter thing to do, since if you don't have anything valuable in the car, you won't have to pay for a window. (Yes, I know, someone could steal the car... but if they wanted the car, they'd steal it anyways)
I bought a copy of MGS2 a while back from ebay (once it got cheap...) I had rented the game once, but since had deleted my save file. Well, tell ya what, playing the game again was downright annoying until I got to the same point that I was when I rented it.
There's almost no replayability because of all of the information they cram into the cutscenes... Kinda like a scary movie. It's only good once through....
This may be a silly question, but do you have to go with a new chair because of wear?
I know it's a little more near and dear to you than I, but I kind of think of a poor analogy... I repair my cars all the time, constantly replacing broken parts.... what would keep someone from replacing worn parts on a wheelchair? Is there a certification process from the FDA that would limit that?
Of course, if you're in a wheelchair to begin with, you may not have the mobility to actually do the work yourself.
Just chock this post up to stupidity, but curiousity.

It's a Friday night, we're all reading slashdot...
I really don't think I would have wanted to see that dance, come to think of it....
One thing about Win2k that I've noticed is that when you freshly load it, it decides to throw every single ATAPI/CD-ROM device into PIO mode. I'm not sure if this is a bios issue with my board (shouldn't be -- nforce2 asus 2.0 board) or what, but it's downright annoying.
Right click on My Computer, go to Hardware, and click on device manager. Find the channel your CDR is on, and double click. Hit advanced settings, and make sure "Use DMA if possible" is in the box... that's it.....
That was actually one of my favorite games for the system, other than contra etc...
How to beat the bars of doom -- move all the way to the top of the screen, and to the center. You still have to maneuver the first few bars (which, if you've played it as much as I have, you know where they're coming... even after 10+ years) and then you're set...
Gradius 5 will be out in the fall for the US, and I will probably have the first copy. I've still not committed enough time to beat gradius 3 or 4 for the PS2, but if you're looking for a quick burst of fun, do gradius 4 on Boss Rush mode... man, only takes about 15-20 minutes, and you'll find yourself playing it over and over to better your time... my best is in the 11-12 minute range IIRC....
Well, that was my general meaning... I was just trying to say that cheap fuel could detonate earlier in a high compression engine (giving the carbon/temperature).... but I wasn't truly aware about the different pressure zones... that's truly informative:)
Offtopic, but I wouldn't worry about shielding the CAT-5. Just make sure you don't run your cat-5 runs near any of your mains power, or your power cords etc (follow the same practice you'd do with a home theatre -- keep power seperate from audio) and you should be fine.
The only real gotcha there would be if your switch/router/whatever decided on a surge to throw a few extra volts down the line... at that point, if you've got the endpoints on UPS's, it shouldn't be an issue, but even electronics can break down.....
In addition, putting cheap gas into a high compression engine is asking for trouble. Ever have an older car "ping" under load? That's bad.
Higher octane gas reduces the chance that there is unburnt "gas" in the chambers on the next compression cycle. If the unspent gases or carbon is still pretty warm, it'll explode early, and can damage valves, pistons, etc....
The one thing that I wish I knew then that I know now is that the "permanent record" and getting in trouble really didn't matter, in the whole scheme of things.
But then again, maybe I'm a better person for conforming... ugh.
"I have been watching morbidly as the RIAA tries to make felons out of normal people."
One really quick thought on this -- while what they're doing may have a HUGE impact on the lives of the people breaking the copyright law, they will not be deemed "felons"... since these are civil suits, I highly doubt they'll be stripped of their right to vote or bear arms yadda yadda yadda...
Why would the Police bother with red light runners when the murderers are still running around?
I can't understand why they continue to waste time with the little fish when the old guy down the street and the man who lives in a tool shed 3 blocks away are all running around killing people.
I wonder what would happen if you shot one of the "sound triangulators"... would it give false readings, since the sensor would be destroyed before it got a chance to report back?
Maybe it would get a loud "click" short or something, and tell the log "I'm dead"...:)
That's exactly the way my girlfriend is. We haven't gotten married, and have been together for years, but every now and again I think of trading my sports car in...
Most times, she tells me not to do it. Partially because she likes it as much as I do:)
I remember that... but didn't they change to "Green Jelly"?
I actually remember seeing one of their album covers at a radio station prior to the name change... kind of interesting....

RFID Explained

Actually, back to the "lost keys under the couch", I'd very much like to stick RFID's on:
My TV remotes (especially the oft-unused VCR or DVD remote)... it always pisses me off when someone misplaces these and I really want to watch a tape or DVD.
My keys and work badge -- Why is it I always leave these in different places? Guess I'm lazy.
Anyways, it'd be neat to have a home that could tell you the location of an item in your "inventory", at least down to the room... of course, that would require you to have an RFID that you could "contact"... I saw someone posted the idea of having the sensors in the doorways, but I think it'd be more reliable to be able to have the house scan the whole room and VERIFY that the item is in said room.
Of course, I'd also settle for a "base station paging device" that I could stick penny-sized screamers on that would go off if I pushed the right button.... Lost your keys? Hit the "keys" button on the base station and off ya go!

Wow.
**lameness filter bypass**
I'd actually buy the Robin Hood defense, as long as it had a sprinkling of the Chewbacca defense in there somewhere..
Of course, I'm kinda dumb like that.

Actually, you're spot on with that.

Not guerilla warfare, gnutella warfare :)

Maybe I should read from the link, but do they mention whether it matters if you have a ... ahem .. legit copy? :)

"Do not do it" is four words, and to be picky, a period.
Kinda reminds me of the "pro-war hillbillies" on Southpark --
"If you don't like it, then get out!"
I remember that... but didn't they change to "Green Jelly"?

Yea, lord knows that they might not want to actually enforce what's deemed (right or wrong) rightfully theirs.
I think it's probably a dim patent as well, but it's their right to have it at this point. If we want things changed, we must change the system.
