I like the Alfresco approach the best myself, especially 2.0 coming out. Access, Policies, Rules, Indexing, Portability and auditing. Over the web, through web dav and version control on top of that. Hard to beat.
I'll be happy to speak about our Contnent Managment, Office and software as a service solutions. Give me a call toll free or visit my website for more info.
Can a day go by where google doesn't make frontpage for doing something millions of other companies already do (and are frankly better at)
Or OS X is the greatest rip off of everything else out there..
They're all 'rip-offs' and if that is your biggest grip i guess you don't wear anything but levis, you only wear white cotton shirts, you only wear bland shoes, you only drive a ford car, you only run an intel cpu, you only use a black and white tv, you only run commodore because everything else is a 'rip-off'
So whats the point? Vista isn't stopping you, your hardware is. HiDef is bandwidth/CPU intensive and old hardware isn't going to cut it. Thats not a fault of Vista. If you want HD playback on your laptop get a modern laptop. If you want HD playback on your PC you probably have a PC that isn't going to go to a landfill to begin with.
Vista isn't negating all that hardware, the Movie Studios are. You have the same problem of not being able to run protected content no matter WHICH platform you choose. If Linux ever gets High Def DVD or if MAC's ever get Hi-Def DVD you bet they too will be DRM'd
I hate replying to old stuff, but it has everything to do with Office 2k7.
Microsoft CRM ties directly into Outlook 2007, Outlook 2007 ties directly into Microsoft Dynamics running on our (beta, yes) Longhorne Server. Not only is Outlook 2007 a core component of Office 2007 we integrate everything through to Word and Excell online and offline. Excell worksheets are shared and published to both Jboss and Jahia from which we use Open Source BI intelligence components to offer our customers access to data according to systems they use and services they purchase from us.
We use Jboss and Jahia as our front end for customer presence. This runs on a linux cluster and we setup portlets to pull in customer data. Jboss integrates with some our our custom monitoring components and we use the business process system to send events across our servers for tasks/triggers/alerts we have active for our internal use as well as external customers.
you my friend are the woefully ignorant one. We use a mix of Open source and Office 2k7 and the cost is irrelevent since we pay for support across the board.
We have tested SugarCRM and its too much of a moving target, we have thought about developing our own system but we're not a software development company - we are a service company and we're more focused on generating revenue than we are concerned about which OS we run or application we run as we run what works, what our users love and what makes our business stay in business.
Google is out to do one thing, and that is make money.
When i turn on a new PC i get google shoved down my face, when i install winzip i get google shoved down my face, when i upgrade java runtimes on my desktop and workstations i get google shoved down my face, when i try and do anything on the net i get google shoved down my face.
Infact i see more "GOOGLE" staring at me then i do any other "brand" and its wearing me thin. Not to mention that google has no user privacy plan, no way to allow you to delete your accounts, no way to cancel services, no way to talk to a human for 99% of its services. I'd rather pay a few hundred bucks to speak to a human than deal with the BS that is google customer service.
Maybe you like all the free crap they offer but if you bother to scratch the surface and open your eyes a bit you will see how they're not just a "Good company" but someone out there to make money at whatever cost.
and you think they care about the consumer? HA HA HA HA
I've been here long enough to know the reasons i upgrade aren't the same reasons anyone else would consider it.
My point is, i've explained myself MILLIONS of times to the slashdot crowd and they always point out how those features are useless, misleading or done in other products but they forget the simple fact that Software is a Solution and as long as it solves your needs, fits your budget and is easy to use & integrate then it doesn't matter what other people think.
Too many times i get drilled down for all the wrong reasons, so if you can't find whats right with something on your own then what *I* say won't make any difference to you.
Not my fault this place is stacked with ignorant users.
As for streamlining our business, we use Microsoft CRM and our smaller offices uses Accounting 2007 Pro and tying everything together through Office 2k7 is easy as 1-2-3. We use services in Windows 2003, Windows Longhorne Server, SharePoint, Jboss Portal, and Jahia app server to tie things together, share files and publish services/data to our clients and extranet/intranet portals.
Users love it, thats all that we needed. Upgrade was a breeze and included as part of our services.
And if i have to explain the reasons to you, its really not worth your time is it? The fact is my business loves it, my users love it and it ties up our services and simplifies our processes so much better than 2003 that it was worth it.
So my point is, you either have a already researched features you like and will run with or you ignore everything and pretend because you don't upgrade no one else will.
If you want to talk about persecution, don't just chase after one religion, go after them all.
The problem isn't what happened 70, 80, 90 or even 40 years ago, its about what is happening today. We can't go back in time to fix the past, but we can learn from our mistakes and prevent them in the future.
The majority of our problems have nothing to do with Muslims, but how we have used/abused the middle east to keep certain empires in power or to leverage the weeknesses and extreme cultures of some of these people to create false "values" of our own ideology.
If i took what you said as truth Iraq isn't a war about "Freedom" and "removing Sadamm" its a 100 year war of religion. I would then have even further sincere doubts about you and our administration.
Infact i don't for one second NOT believe you as that *IS* the problem. Bush didn't take us to war to free Iraq'is, spread democracy or protect our shores. He went there because as you explain it so elequently he believes its an empire that can't co exist with our culture. sic
For example the Xbox 360 has unified architecture graphics processing that is just coming into the market through the gefoce 8800's which cost MORE than an entire 360.
The 360 has 3 cores, 48 unified pipelines, 512 megs of GDDR3 memory and an insane bus speed between them. Hardly "mid range" by any PC standards considering PC's are still fighting to catch up.
The problem with consoles most of the time isn't console power but demand to get games out the door before having a finished product. On pc's they just patch patch patch and eventually get it right - consoles are heading that way now though.
This will only go so far in consumer land, where it can make billions it doesn't have anything to speak to.
Won't replace my CrackBerry because it won't integrate with Exchange, doesn't have millions of applications available for it and well frankly, the 5 hours talk time isn't going to cut it.
If game developers stick to OpenGL or DirectX 9 or 10 then thats all they need. Infact game developers should be DROOOLING over the tools available for them under vista.
Direct hardware access is so passe, now its about API's and how fast they can be accelerated between CPU/GPU and Physics accelerations.
Writing games on DOS/4GW and Win32s is a thing of the past. If you want to see a game, check out the DirectX 10 enabled games and then tell me vista isn't a gamers os.
for 4-600 bucks you can get an LCD TV of 30+ inches that will play HD content, work on your PC and wow your senses.
More people give a hoot about hd because it is better, its multi-purpose and frankly its long over due.
I know lots of people with kids (myself included) who make decent salaries but manage to have a nice tv and appreciate it yet - didn't blow 3k as you suggest.
SBS is a few hundred bucks and includes exchange, 5 CLA's for exchange client, managed patch pushing, active directory for address books.. ahh screw it.. IF you don't know what SBS or 2k3 gets you its not my fault. for what SBS offers it is cheap
Sbs is just one of the offerings, for satellite offices it solves a lot of headaches. You can use whatever OS you want, my point was that using XP isn't good and there are tons of other options pointed out such as using NAS appliances, linux boxes or what have you.
Its not a failure of microsoft that this inept technician doesn't know what he is doing.
First of all, its called using the right tool for the right job. When you buy an OEM desktop you get OEM windows, you *CAN* buy the CD for an extra 10-20 bucks with most places and if you register as a reseller you can get much more. (If you're a microsoft partner you can just sell another license through your partner advantage program and use your own cd's/media for install) (free to join program). Finding Media is probably the easiest job of any techie.
Secondly, don't use Windows XP to be a server. It really isn't much more and sometimes cheaper to get a system pre-installed with SBS 2003 R2 and you get Exchange and other features built in not to mention a true comparison against Linux resource/functionality wise.
Terribly inaccurate and to say the least a very inept technician and company at work here.
My biggest selling "managed service" for small/medium sized businesses isn't my linux solution but my sbs 2003 r2 solution because for most people it not only saves money but provides tons of features from easy to configure remote access to sharing in sharepoint to cenralized ad administration/logins/access restrictions to built in exchange and with the advanced version sql server access.
I would never sell someone a desktop as a server solution simply because your selling yourself short. If cost savings was an issue buy a refurb server system and put whatever linux you want on it.
This article has absolutely nothing to do with the Wii. Madden for the wii is still madden and people are obsessed over it graphically just as much as the other consoles and it wasn't like it was cheaper to produce the wii version than the other versions.
The simple truth of the matter is developers need to make games. That is all. Some people like wii games, some people don't. The wii is a new product in nintendos linup and i'm sure it will do good but it isn't the be all end all that people preach around here.
I like my graphics, i don't mind some cutscenes as games are sometimes stories that need some telling as well. You can preach the wii all you want, but the wii is a console, not a game.
The real problem with the media market in general (not just games) is public companies having to increase there bottom line as if we are just a product consumer. Most gamers don't play games because we need to, but because we want to and if EA doesn't make games we want to play it won't matter which console they prefer to support, how much money they dump into or whos name they get on it.. It will still suck.
EA is like the motor giants of detroit, they had some good linups but thought Americans would buy crap just because of name alone. Forget quality, forget character, forget slick design, feedback and personality. Its about profit. It costs money to make money and if you don't like that, then leave. Maybe EA needs some new management, someone who understands what a gamer feels when he/she is in the passion of the moment.
I like the small shops because they do one thing and do it well. Epic turns out one hit after another because they stick to what they're good at and they sell the technology to others so they can build what they're good at as well.
The problem with EA is they're a company who believes that buying up markets creates demand and that is where they will fail. You don't own me EA and thus i don't own anything from you.
Bob Casey is a great guy. He won't dissapoint you. He's a democrat but a conservative one by any means. More of a "libercrat" which is where the party is generally going.
Frankly i hope everyone because libercrats. Libertarians that still like some form of social programs, national services (i could and would fight to keep national parks alive) and fight for good ol' liberty.
They don't support online play right now, so they won't get my money. Its 2006, darn near 2007 and they want to ship a console that is single player only?
To have a fun game of Red Steel i'm going to need to invest in 160.00 worth of controllers. That just isn't right!

If you read what people post here, most sane people wouldn't touch linux and would look at these discussions as childs play.

IE 7 asks you which search provider you wish to use when you install it. NO big deal if you ask me, not like google doesn't have brand recognition.
