It should be fairly easy to find facts on gun ownership, number of shooting deaths, etc
The problem is in drawing a conclusion from those facts. There is not a single "correct" conclusion that can be drawn, or we wouldn't have the various viewpoints that we have.
You get hoards of e-mail every week since subscribing to the security bulletin list? I think not.
This patch is bulletin number 47 for the year. By my primitive math, since this is the 34th week of the year, that would be about 1-2 pieces of mail a week.
It appears that Palm, despite being the brand name for one specific line of hardware and a specific OS, has become like Kleenex... a term used to describe any item in the category?
When's the last time you asked for a facial tissue?
IANAL, and I am not a GPL guru either, but how can RMS say that all software should be free, then at the same time, say that what he really means is free unless it is going to be used or distributed by someone he doesn't like?
I find it amusing that RMS and the other GPL zealots want unlimited freedom, unless of course such freedom would result in a choice or course of action that they might disagree with...
Please explain how an aspiring artist would NEED Photoshop? I assume you're talking about how to learn techniques and such... most of which can be learned using the Photoshop Elements product, which is much less expensive, or with a product such as Paint Shop Pro or the gimp.
Would it be too much to ask for the/. editors to read the items submitted and to verify that the links work? Of all things, the slashcode link was broken due to a dumb HTML error.
I hope that the "hopefully" comment in the original question was a joke... if you're seriously in danger of not graduating high school, you need to do some soul-searching before thinking about college...
I was in a very similar situation, with a few call center jobs under the belt, and a desire to move into programming but no degree.
I am now working for a large national corporation as an "IT Support Analyst" which is a rather non-descriptive job title. I do some helpdesk duties, but while I'm here I'm getting them to pay for and send me to lots of training to lead me in the programming direction... they've sent me to some XML classes,.NET development seminars, with SQL coming up soon. I'm starting to develop some programs for internal use that I can then use on the resume.
If you can find the right company that is willing to let you flex the job description a little, you can learn on the job. Sure, helpdesk duties aren't the greatest. But right now I'm developing software to run our helpdesk, and some utility programs that go along with it.
You say that Microsoft "clearly aren't doing enough about it".
Microsoft has had security patches in place for well over a year that will prevent these type of viruses from being executed. All new installs of Outlook come with this patch enabled by default.
I'm curious what exactly you recommend that they be doing?
Taco posts this in the "who's suprised by that department", yet let's all start the timer until the next time that one of the/. editors makes some sarcastic comment about.NET being delayed...
Grrr... seeing this makes me happy and very pissed at the same time.
I used to work for a certain graphics table manufacturer which actively refuses to provide any sort of support for Linux. When I worked for them, myself and one other guy actively lobbied and worked on getting Linux supported. The short version is that we were shot down and the company managed to get rid of both of us.
The kicker is that Dreamworks (at least when I worked there) was a huge Wacom customer. Now they can still use the tablets (thank you open source driver) but can't get any official support. Neato.

I have left quite a bit out of this story, including the bit about where the police were almost called and where the doctor notes to the first manager that he makes more in a month than the manager does in a year...
So what? The only thing that statement was likely to do was to further aggravate the already-unhappy manager...
I might get flamed, but actually Microsoft's contract for their beta testers (the "real" testers, not Joe Schmoe who bought the beta 'cause he heard it was cool) is pretty thorough.
As much as we here in the US would love to force our values on everyone, just because the US Supreme Court says that something violates our constitution, doesn't necessarily mean it is agains the law in Australia.

I got in trouble for saying the following to one of our users (after he installed it, agreeing to all of the nasty terms):
Apparently that's not a valid response, at least according to my boss.

You have an odd definition of "hoards".

Could I read just one article on Slashdot that doesn't rehash Microsoft bashing (the Nimda thing) that's old news?
I was hoping for some fun tips on Microsoft Systems Management Server.

If you only have 4 people, I'm wondering if perhaps MS Project is overkill...
And of course OSS upgrades always go smoothly, never having any problems or dependency issues.

I can't be the only one, who, after reading the posting, immediately had visions in my head of hyper wacked-out frogs jumping all over the place...

Some of us are still waiting for Alec Baldwin to leave the country as he claimed he would if Bush became president...

This isn't new. The patch for this was released 9 months ago. Are we going to report every bug and defect that existed in Linux 9 months ago as well?
I know how we all love to flame Microsoft, but if the guy was the head of MS Security, odds are he was an executive who never wrote a line of code.
He's guaranteed not to have anything to do with holes in MS products.
A better thing to look at would be how often was Microsoft's network hacked.
