Evolution is defined as natural selection of random mutations.
In biology, evolution is the change in the genetic material of a population of organisms from one generation to the next. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolution Wikipedia)
Once our society begins selecting and/or rejecting offspring based on their genes, or we begin manipulating our genetic codes, evolution stops.
I think you are mixing up natural selection with evolution. Natural selection is part of evolution but not equal to evolution. Genetic drift is an alternative as is artificial selection and sexual selection.
I am not sure if there is an "official" definition, but I would argue, that screening of embryos is as much a part of evolution.
Strange, you compare the EU with to the USA? The EU doesn't even have a constitution or a democratically elected president. Currently it's just a NAFTA on steroids. Taking into account, that France has nukes, I would argue that they are quiet powerful. And what is the "obvious" reason not to give Germany a permanent seat?
But they don't need to be out of sight or ear shot, you just put them in a place that's noisier and uglier than windmills. Along motorways, for example. And that's something that Germany has a lot of.
No idea if they actually put them there, though. Much of Germany is probably too hilly. Along the coast is more efficient, but Germany is rather short on coastline.
yes, I actually remember where the fixed speed traps are by what kind of windmill is near them. Most of the wind is generated in the flat north.
Hi, I think you have no reason to apologize for what you believe in. You seem to be exactly the type of "believer" that any atheist accepts just as you accept us.
But I hope you realize that in the eyes of a nonbeliever, you contradict yourself. You believe in Evolution, but state that God made Gays the way they are. Well I only believe in former, as it excludes the latter. You believe Jesus died for your and my sins. As I see it I can't have sinned, as I don't believe in god or in turn sin as a concept. Jesus died in my eyes for having been a revolutionary in the times he lived in, nothing more, nothing less. I also don't believe religion is evil, I believe it is the root of a lot of evil. If I believed, I don't think that I could piss of god, why would he be pissed of about and why in turn should I care? etc. etc.
I think the problem boils down to the assumption of most believers that their believes are not to be questioned. I disagree. I think everything is to be questioned, discussed and thought over and over and over. This includes the question "is there a/several god/s".
he suggests that all theories of god should be rejected without any critical assessment. Where does he suggest that? All videos, books and mp3s I have seen contradict your statement. His point is that the postulation "there is a god" is just another scientific theory as any other. The proof is to be shown by those who say that god does exist. He concludes that there is no such scientific proof and therefore he rejects the theory.
they should always be entitled to the first hearing in the court of science Yes!
That doesn't mean I don't firmly believe they will always be wrong - but that's my opinion not a scientific fact. I disagree. As long as there is no scientific proof for a theory, then for the time being it is fact that there is no god.
I don't get it, at the multinational I work for, all applications are scripted and installed automatically at boottime. To add Firefox would be so easy its mindboggling. I fear the reason for not using Firefox is the 100.000 workers who have come accustomed to using IE6. Then there is the problem of migrating (installing not being the whole enchilada) bookmarks and settings. I suppose we will see a merge to Firefox as the "upgrade" to Vista starts in these big companies, by then you will have firefox on the image that the new systems get rolled out with.
I see the same advantages with the eee that I found with the Compaq Contura Aero (http://www.homecomputermuseum.de/comp/279_de.htm). Small, small, small and good _enough_ for _most_ tasks. Did I say small?
To get people to shift away from the Windows platforms they're familiar with, Linux must offer better applications, yet there is not one "killer app" for Linux." That is exactly the reason I switched from Windows. Linux has a few killer applications/features I will not miss:
- Amarok: love the way it presents my MP3 collection - MythTV: the best client/server based PVR - KDE: Better Windows than Windows - smart/apt-get: how quick can you update ALL your applications on windows? - shell: script anything to automate - remote maintenance: I maintain about 5 PCs for my family in as distant places as Colombia, all with tools build into the OS - security: open and up to date - server: I have so many things running on my home server that I cant list them all... - free: yes, thats a killer
Now I look back to about 5 years ago when I still ran XP, what do I miss? NOTHING. What does my Family miss? NOTHING.
Kinda reminds me of the "big stone head race" on Easter Island just before they ran out of trees. This planet is having a huge problem with global climate change and most rich countries are getting into a race to the moon... I hope the planet holds for another 60 years, then I quit!
I remember having read this in "the selfish gene" by Richard Dawkings that was written 30 years ago... whats so great about this? or is it just a prove that it actually works that way?
happened to me a few weeks back. Celeron 2.0 Ghz Dell, now the workstation of my mother in law. The hard drive had funny noises and was full of legal documents as the previous owner seems to be a lawyer... I did what he should have done, opened the hard drive and nicked the magnets;-)
Loaded openSuSe 10.2 and told her it was the newest Windows... as she uses it to browse the web with Firefox and nothing more. I got 10 mother in law points for it, now my account stands at nice -10.664.992 points
Maybe a generation issue, my Father disappeared when he was 14 with his cousin who was 16 for several months as they where riding bike around northern Germany. He got in trouble when he got back, not for disappearing without saying anything, but for having skipped helping out at home.
I have posted this before, but I also switched my mother (60 years old) to Linux about 2 years ago. The funny thing is we live on 2 different continents with about 7 hours of lag.
Pros: No Spyware, no Virus. Automatic security patches. No reboots for installs. Remote management (ssh, vnc). Everything works!! I am down from about 5 hour/week to about 1 hour/month of maintenance. OpenOffice is just like MSOffice (she still calls it Word, who cares). All of her Hardware works (cheap HP printer)! Multi protocol messenger (kopete) has taken the trouble of explaining the differences between Yahoo, AOL etc away (again without the security problems on MS Land). Spam fighting build into Kmail (using spamassassin).
Cons: some of her girlfriends told her that they could not send her mails because she used Linux (they have no clue what that is, but their 20 year old sons think they do). Power Management is not up to date (suse 10.0).
That might have been a reason (past tens), but what is the current obvious reason?

http://screencasts.ubuntu.com/ is a good start for anyone not into Linux. I use it as a link on the desktop of my family members.

My wife and I (me?) actively call it Calvinball all the time. Its fun to notice in real live how often we change the rules inadvertently.

How many McAffee EULAs have been tested in court?
PS: McAffee, never heard of them. Does it run on Linux? Has anyone greeted our McAffee Overlords? Imagine a McBeowulf Cluster of these...

this one will open your mind:

my boss told me the same 4 years ago. I did not stop wearing tie and suit. I have climbed two steps on the ladder since...
- Amarok: love the way it presents my MP3 collection
- MythTV: the best client/server based PVR
- KDE: Better Windows than Windows
- smart/apt-get: how quick can you update ALL your applications on windows?

recompile Kaffeine to use encrypted CDs? Not necesary... there are many repositories that provide rpms that do this for you.
you truly made my day!!!
hi, I am unsure what you are trying to say. Could you rephrase, please?
Maybe a generation issue, my Father disappeared when he was 14 with his cousin who was 16 for several months as they where riding bike around northern Germany. He got in trouble when he got back, not for disappearing without saying anything, but for having skipped helping out at home.
Times change, peoples problems change.

Amen! Things that run on my MythTV box (front and backend in one):
- Cyrus IMAP + Horde IMP Webmail
- Spamassassin
- Webmin
- VideoDB
- TorrentFlux
- Fileserver (NFS)
- MySQL (other than for MythTV)
sometimes it just doubles as a full Workstation.
