An interesting (and very depressing book) on what went on on the Russian front is "The Fall of Berlin" by Antony Beevor. He had access to a lot of Russian archives that didn't see the light of day until after communist meltdown. The "we shouldn't have stopped 'til we hit Moscow" argument might not seem so black and white with more background.
Just a for example, at that point in the war, Russian tanks were far superior to anything the US had in the field. The allies still had Japan to contend with, the bomb wasn't finished, and no one was quite sure if it would work. So the "we would have nuked them 'til they glow" argument doesn't quite work either.
Sounds more like it was a chip fab. One of the chemicals that might be used in the wet benches can be pyrophoric (ignite contact with air, with no other ignition source). The gas called silane.
The ducts used to pull silane out of the wet benches are usually heavily fire rated. Silane is used to deposit silicon layers on chips. I know that other wet benches have burned up in the past due to silane as an ignition souce. Generally it is heaviliy cut with Nitrogen (98% Nitrogen, 2% Silane) since the silane is so reactive.
I'm sure we have some people on these groups that know more than I do.
Wish I had a better referece. This isn't quite how I remember the story, and I can't vouch for its accuracy, but I believe some variation of the story did happen. Think originally I read about it in InfoWeek or another rag.
I disagree. Bester messed up Garibaldi pretty good, and seemed to take a little too much joy in it. The sadistic streak made the character believable. If you followed B5, and looked at Bester, Chekov didn't even cross your mind. I thought it was great.
Always thought the tip of the hat to Alfred Bester (whose book The Demolished Man laid out a lot of the "telepath lore") was a brillant move by the writers. Okay, they stole, but they gave the author credit at the same time. It was great.
To be fair, Apple purchased the company that made Shake, they didn't develop it in house (think it was 2002). Asking the Shake team to optimize their UI for a one button mouse would have been kind of silly.
Introducing a multi button mouse was a better strategy in my opinion. They should have done it sooner.
Allows you to use the journaled file format on the PC, and run your ipod on PC and Mac. Works well especially if you run both OS. Also can make moving files back and forth easier. Think there is a trial period.
Watching people plug and chug into equations they don't understand is very frustrating. It is more frustrating when these people present themselves as experts, because when you question them, they can't respond. They can't say "I don't know", because people would question their "expert" status, so they bluff. And ignorant people buy it, because they are listening to "an expert". It can put peoples lives in jeopardy.
Also, teaching "cutting edge" material to students when they don't know the basics may be great for the bottom line of the university, but it can be bad for the student since "cutting edge" in many industries is useless in 5 years. Thats okay though, they can go back to school (wink).
I could see them giving discounts. They could do a rom construct of your brain, but add parts to the construct that leave you craving Coke, Cheetos and Microsoft products for the next 80 years...
Might save 40 or 50 grand on the "sticker" price over a lifetime.
I love macs, I use macs. But, at least at the time I was trying to do it, they didn't support MP2 "out of the box". I had to buy a quicktime plugin to read MP2 from the mac site for $29.95. There may be a freeware way around this. Maybe someone could suggest one.
Macintosh users would expect instant compatability with iMovie. Imovie works with DV. Doesn't work with MP2 - at least when I tried it. Maybe in Tiger?
My guess is that if you had the Quicktime plugin, Quicktime would read the MP2 files without a problem. Writing them to quicktime may be another story entirely - with sound anyway.
I know this is slashdot and I will be corrected if I am in error. Please try to keep it polite. Thanks.
Isn't the new XBox emulator running old NT code on Mac PPC chips? The XBox2 is supposed to have a number of G5 chips if memory serves. Think it does...
Have used Small Dog. Like their service. Even drove past it a few times on my way to Sugarbush.
No, mac laptops are not indestructible. Particularly the new aluminum ones. They are however, easy to get parts for, and upgrade, because the models stay relatively consistent, and they usually ship a lot of them.
Its also nice to be able to upgrade your 4 year old 400 MHZ powerbook to a 900 MHZ powerbook. Powerlogix did a good job cheap. Now if they can just think of a way of upgrading the graphics card...
M$ needs windows to be a moving target. Otherwise they can't charge for periodic upgrades. Whether corporate America can be convinced they don't need Microsoft is a good question.
Whether some IT organizations can be convinced they don't need Microsoft to be a moving target is also an interesting question. Many IT people seem to believe a moving M$ means job security, and advise their bosses accordingly.
"it may seem less obvious what Microsoft stands to gain from continuing its relationship"
MONEY!, which IE (free) never got them.
They also get a chip in the "we are not really a monopoly" game with the feds. Its all good for them.

Have not read all the threads or frankly the link, but this reminds me of an old story I was able to google: http://www.softpanorama.org/Scripting/Shellorama/h umor.shtml

Read the facts.
Then mod parent WAAAAY up.

Doesn't do anything for the shuffle though.
The big/little endian issues go away. People porting games and programs that twiddle bits will certainly love that.
I disagree.

Lots of ebooks on ebay within your LT $50 price range.

Its just baseball and apple pie! (well, maybe baseball is a bad example).
Why aren't they running OS6? What are they waiting for?
Acrobat Reader 7 has been out for a while now. Its been very stable for me on windows and mac. You might consider downloading it.
Have to admit, I skipped 6.0.
I bill myself out at $50 an hour. With drivers, installation, spyware and other BS? Rather just open the Apple box.
But thats just me.
Also interesting, since ultimately it would mean that you could run palmos on pocketpc.

Panasonic NB-G100P
The perfect toaster.
Hey Palm, how about some WPA support for my Tungsten C?

No, but you used to be able to download the OS9 version off their web site for free after they discontinued support - maybe you still can.
The OS9 version runs in emulation in OSX. I use it to read old files.

Well, no.
If this is like any Microsoft effort, the fees will go up when they reach critial mass, and drive everyone else out of business.
They have you right where they want you from the word go.
