but it may sound like one. (it is not MS bashing either)
I have always wondered if Microsoft has done something like this in their operating systems. If they were sneaky, the "System Idle Process" would be doing a lot more than advertised. It never registers on the CPU counts, even though it is running at 99% of the CPU most of the time. The OS is closed source, so nobody could review it. Just a few ticks here and there, times 50 million. Have the website scoop up data, and distribute the next session (would be missed because you were doing a windows update or checking for the latest security hole fix). Get a nice new registration scheme that gives the PC it's new job codes. I'd sure be doing it if I was them and I had that many captive PCs
Make their lists worthless. Compile this, run it...(snipped out overly long, but runnable C proggy)
Dood, learn some perl. Not only would it cut this down to a nice readable couple of lines, but you could also generate a different list every time the web page was hit. That way, it would really poison the well.

PS: Yes folks, right tool for the job. Not every job.
Seeing as every/.er in the world will be replying to this story, I thought I'd jump on with some advice (as a married nerd, I'm qualified).
1. Always listen to each her. Nothing will get you into the doghouse faster than her thinking you are not listening when she thinks she has something important to say.
2. WIRELESS! Yes, good old 802.11b. It allows you to be on the couch doing nerdly things, while you are in the same room with her. No more lost in your home office for hours and hours every night. This is definitely one of the best technologies for a married couple.
3. Respect each other. It sounds so simple, but a lot of couples seem to lose that over the years. They start doing dumb things like rolling their eyes when the other speaks. Lack of respect for your mate has destroyed more couples than anything.
4. Respect each other. Am I repeating myself? Well, yes, because it is so important. Just let the other person be themselves, and the small stuff will take care of itself.
5. Don't lose yourself! That sounds anti-love, but it's not. Make concessions, but don't change yourself. You are who she fell in _love_ with. Of course, you will grow, and change, but your soul will remain.
6. Laugh with her. You should be marrying your best friend. If she is not, you are doing this too soon (said that one a little late, didn't I). It is the friendship that carries you through life together. You both will have times when all you need is a friend, and being there like that for each other is critical.
7. Don't mod each other. Ok, I had to get a/. ref into this. Let the other one say what is up with them before you mark them as a troll.
8. Just SAY IT. When something is up, take the risk, and just SAY IT. Don't hem and haw, and let it build up. The friendship and respect you build will allow you to trust in the ability to just say what is on your mind. It feels so much better when it's out in the open, whatever it is.
9. Men are from mars, women are from venus. I know this to be true. Get the book on CD, and listen to it in your car. Then dispose of it like you would pr0n. Descreatly. Never let anyone know you listened to it (because they will think you are a f4g. However, there actually are some good tools and concepts in the book. It teaches you not to try and solve her problems, but when to just listen.
Will this mean that IBM will finally replace OS/2 as the bootstrap and control server? Replacing that with Linux would be a nice start!
For those that do not have the benifit of a 390 sitting behind them, it is very disconcerting to have that big black IBM monitor on top of it, because it is running OS/2 on a Celeron board inside the mainframe to control the whole show.
FWIW, I've had significantly better experiences with (www.)pricescan(.com) than pricewatch (ie. getting lower prices for the same items). Checkitout.
Seeing it's a shameless plug by you, I did check it out.
Athlon XP 2000+ Pricewatch: $284 - Pricescan: $315
Athlon XP 1800+ Pricewatch: $143 - Pricescan: $148
PC2100 512 MB Pricewatch: $116 - Pricescan: $135
Maxtor 80GB Pricewatch: $115 - Pricescan: $125

I can't believe I'm going to say this, but the very first holodeck episode (I'm not talking about Farpoint where Riker finds Data in the holodeck), the one with the Binars and Minuet, was not bad. You realize that, if Barry were to get a copy of Linux, he would render his computer unuseable in the time it took him to install it, right? If you read his column, he's not the mostly technically proficient person in the world.
Ok, I know this will be off topic (Karma is like underwear, change it daily). This is the very problem that keeps Linux off of the desktop of most people. The need to be a techy to just get it working is what stops it. Sure, it get's better every year, but at some point a group needs to get together and build a "stupid" linux. Something that Mom or the wife can use. Mandrake has made great strides in bringing a simpler system to users, but it is really not there yet. I watched a fairly capable computer person install it on a laptop that I loaned him last week. He spent an hour just trying to change the screen resolution after the install. Someone being able to render their machine unusable because of what we consider to be a great operating system should make us really look at what we need to do.

PS: Mozilla 0.9.7, Kernel 2.4.17, and I have been bitching about usability of Linux for the desktop for 6.5 years (as confirmed in my 1995 usenet posts on google). In all that time, I still have not taken the time to learn program well enough to rewrite the kind of desktop I'm talking about.
Don't forget that Shrek (and both Toy Story movies for that matter) was a great movie because it had a good script! If you just put out the same crap (*cough* FF *cough*), it will not be successful.
The best way to increase the range of the linksys router is to not use a linksys card with it.
Switching from the linksys card to an Orinoco more than tripled my range! It also made me realize that the linksys router signal _was_ hitting the street (I thought it wasn't reaching my couch with the old card), and enlightened me to "War driving". If your having range problems in your house, it is more likely your card.
I guess, if you absolutely need Office(TM) in your office, then go and install a TS or Citrix-Box and use rdpclient or ica-client to access it.
Misconception alert: When you but TS, and use it remotely, you need to by a "Desktop" license. That means a workstation (or pro) license to MS. Office gets the same treatment. 1 user = 1 license. 20 users = 20 license. What it comes down to is the fact that MS get's the same amount of cash if you run it on your PC, or remote over Term Server.
Seeing I'm on the subject, have you ever actually USED the Ica client on Linux? It is crap. Nothing paints right, and it is slower than your mother on ludes. On a 100Mbit LAN, it performs like VNC over a 2400 baud modem. I compare that to running the ICA client on Windows, and it works like you are sitting on the real term server machine.
This is almost the same article I read in 1995! Back then, I was involved in a newsgroup discussion on usability for Linux on the desktop. Most of the predictions, and complaints from back in the day are still there. Sure, there has been polish added, and some really cool features. The kernel has added lots of new features, but the only interface I have seen that came close to a real desktop has been on a freaking Mac (and I HATE macs). At some point in the future, a group will get together and put together an opensource desktop that my wife could use, and be happy with. After 6 and a half years, I won't hold my breath. Don't get me wrong, I'm already running the 2.4.17 kernel on my Thinkpad. I just wonder if predictions like "Linux desktop will appear in public places" are realistic when it is really an OS for nerds, and will continue to stay that way until a real organized effort takes place to bring about a simple desktop.
Flame answer 1: Yes, Gnome and KDE are great, but they are great for geeks, not moms. Maybe end the political crap and have them get together for a cookout at my house to bury the hatchet and take the best code from both to make KDGnome? That would kick some ass!
Flame answer 2: Because Macs are great for destop publishing, but that is not what I need to do. (and yes, I know it's BSD, and not Linux)
Flame answer 3: Sorry Linus. You have done great things here, and I have great admiration for your work. I know you are not competing with MS here. I would just like to see Linux knock the head off of Bill's empire. It get's predicted every year.
Flame answer 4: I know, I know, I have all the source code. I should write it myself, right? Well I suck at programming C, and I am man enough to admit that I could not write production level code for a project like that.
