At the end of Snow Crash it wasn't even clear who won the showdown between Uncle Enzo and Kraven. He books don't "end" they accelerate and then abruptly stop.
Looking over the article quickly, it seems that it is mostly about putting small computers into old form factors, which has nothing to do with "analog".
In any case, I through college with a traditional, heavy clunky desk phone. People found that very odd. Now I would love to have just the handset of that phone as my cellphone. You could fit some large batteries in there. And it would be loud enough to hear! I would not mind a larger phone if the sound quality and signal quality were better. Somehow current phones are getting smaller rather than better.
Horror is probably an exaggeration, but it does seem like a loss to not preserve the original versions of films that have had such a strong influence over cinema for the last 25 years. Especially when the effort to do so is relatively minimal. Movies are different from painting of sculpture in that Lucas could produce his improvements without changing the originals, which would be pretty hard to do with the Mona Lisa or David.
chrisd even made a joke about it in a later posting. Notice though that he didn't post the actual spoilers this time, just that there were spoilers to be found and where to find them.

Michael why on earth would you post this on the main page? Don't you people learn? Remember the Lone Gunmen? Don't you have a policy in place now?
If people are interested enough for Ken Jennings to be news for nerds then they are interested enough to not want it spoiled.
Take this off the main page or modify it immediately.
I spent a year working at Thiokol and they frequenlty test fired shuttle boosters and peacekeepers. Since the motor is strapped to a gigantic concrete slab it doesn't go anywhere.
From a half mile away the effect is impressive. First you see a bright light but there is no noise. When the sound hits you it feels like you have been hit. If there is tall grass it bends over as the shock wave approaches. Then the sound just does not let up. Like a deep tissue amssage for a minute.
They were at the University of Utah, not BYU. The had collaborated with Stephen Jones at BYU who was doing similar work.
In any case while you are right about them having a press conference instead of publishing in a journal I have zero recollection of any Mormon conspiracy stories. I have no idea if Pons or Fleischman is LDS. Jones is.
Other than being faster, why would a hardware encoder have intrinsically better output than a software encoder? You can implement the same algorithms in either one.
I don't read Russian so I don't know what the context is, but the Mazafaka site that comes up in the Google results seems to have info on real people in it. At least I am able to find them through Yahoo people search and get the same addresses. Perhaps the credit card numbers are real as well?
I believe you are correct. After looking all over the iMac section for some mention of this capability I found it in the display section. There is an adapter that allows the displays to be used with a standard VESA mount. I assume that since the iMac and the displays use the same (or similar?) L-stand that the adapter would work for both.
If it would make you feel better, you can put a box of Kleenex next to it and pretend that the Kleenex is the Cube and the iMac is just an LCD monitor. Then run a cord from your Kleenex to the screen and run another cord to a hockey puck somewhere and then a cord from the hockey puck to the wall.
The one thing that I would like to see is an after market arm that will clamp to the desk or be mounted on the wall to allow for more adjustability.

Because the issue isn't clearly settled, they could go after a little guy that doesn't have EFF support, or any number of reasons. Also, if there had been a ruling, then there would be no doubt about the issue and no threat of a lawsuit that might cause a little guy to avoid the song to begin with. The current situation is, "If you use this song, you might get sued." That is not the same as it being in the public domain.
I think that it is pretty clear that having a ruling would be helpful in several ways.
Historically, MS made Word function just like WP in order to win market share from WP. There was even an option to turn WP mode on and off later on. Now that they have nobody to steal ideas from (which is mostly WP's own fault) things are getting uglier and uglier.
So yes, in the past, you could open up Word and use it like WordPerfect. This was by design.
No, are YOU kidding? A ruling becomes case law and sets a precedent which will be used to influence other rulings.
Instead of liberating lots of songs for this sort of use, they got the company to agree to let JibJab continue to use the song. If you read the article you would know that the company disputes that copyright has expired, so the song has not been liberated and other "infringers" could still be sued. This hasn't prevented anything in the future.
So yes, JibJab is fine now, but that is all that has happened.
Oddly the flash animation also demonstrates a remarkable improvement in the quality of black. I don't think their simulation of the improvement is very accurate or scientific.
While I am sympathetic to the plight of the poor, I have to say that in my experience (limited to East Palo Alto, Boston, and Brazil) poor people are more likely to have big-screen TVs and cable than the middle class.

At $550 an hour from IBM you think he would have at least had the decency to not plug Dell.
