Geez, give me a break $0 elite; some constructive suggestions would go down well........
Okie Dokie, How about going out and playing catch, build a model, take him hunting or fishing, rent a good movie, etc. I just don't think sitting in front of a computer for two weeks straight is a good thing. You wouldn't let him watch TV for two weeks straight would you? Playing Starcraft isn't very far from that.
You are correct, I don't have any children however answer me this.. would you let your child watch television for two weeks straight? Don't get me wrong, gaming is fun and yes, I agree that taking gaming away wouldn't be a solution here. I simply don't believe that just because you know where your kid is and what he/she is doing (Oh little billy is fine, he's still in front of the computer for the second week straight) makes for a very good upbringing.
Wow... So either you're truely a horrible parent or you're an example of a very good troll. You admit that your son is addicted to starcraft, then you say that he's been gaming straight for two weeks including overniters? Did you miss the article about the Korean gentleman dying from a mere weekend of gaming? Jesus... Gaming is fun but two straight weeks of anything (with the exception of breathing I suppose) isn't good for anybody.
I totally agree with the parent. I like the fact that he wants to work with free software but setting up a warez-like scene for GNU software is just lame. The point of having "0-Day" warez is to be the first group to release it. If Class releases a rip of a game and Fairlight releases an ISO, thats it. Nobody else is going to bother to release it because it's already out. Suppliers aren't needed either unless he thinks of a supplier as the person that actually codes the program.. otherwise anyone that rips a link from freshmeat becomes a "supplier". As for the courier aspect of it, all he means is someone that runs a server that has some storage space for GNU software. So to rehash, Supplier = Coder, Courier = Freshmeat. Great... Another freshmeat.
The authors have a tendency to include snippets from IRC conversations. While it's explaining how hackers communicate during attacks I found it a little lame. I'd rather they had mentioned some "hacker" channels, or something along those lines.
I didn't realize that hacker communication was that interesting, even during an attack. Heh... It could be kind of funny I suppose if the "hackers" were script kiddies.
Hacker #1: D00Zs! I just hax0red this windoze box!
Hacker #2: No way! Fuckin' Awesome guy!
Hacker #1: YeAh, I woulda Hax0red more but mom made me go to bed
Hacker #2: Damn, That be harsh.
it is interesting that IBM, who often claims to be a defender of Open Source Software, would be so negative
Not really... If you look at some other opensource software like.. oh I dunno.. dopewars, I'm sure that the majority of most IBM execs wouldn't support that either. The point is, just because someone is an OSS proponent, doesn't mean that they have to like all open source programs.
I just wanted to invite everyone to use my brand new web site www.spamcalifornianscellphones.com to send out any ads for your compan... wait... awwwww shit.
Hey JACKASS, Did you even read the post you were replying to? It states that he was SELLING PIRATED GAMES! Jail ISN'T a big punishment for selling 400+ pirated games you fucking idiot.
Did you even bother to read the initial article? They said that they were hoping for the government to purchase the simputers and then rent them to townspeople who would each purchase and keep their own smartcard for 1 to 2 dollars apeice.
But we all know that things can change in a 90 degree turn on a day, i.e. Sega Saturn vs. PS, Genesis vs. SNES, OS9 vs. OSX, etc...
OS9 vs. OSX? Apple vs. Apple? Huh? I get your first two... Sega V. Sony, Sega V. Nintendo, But I'm afraid that I fail to understand how OS9 vs. OSX makes any difference at all. Also, You said that it would be hard for UnitedLinux when Redhat and Mandrake have the server and desktop market in their hands? Are you on crack? Are you seriously one of those people that believe that linux will ever have a chance on the average users desktop before you get old and die? If Linux is ever going to be common place on a desktop, it's still many, many, many years out and UnitedLinux will die well before then.
How are things different now that you've been on the job for about nine months?
It's less stressful. At the beginning I was not used to doing interviews, and I had like ten a day. So I was like, what is going on? Now I'm used to it
It's not like working on 2.5 (the development kernel).
Yeah, that kind of thing is really sexy.
I'm glad to see that hard-hitting interviews are still around and I'm even happier to see that the answers are raw and uncut. This interview hit on everything that I wanted to know about kernel development including how sexy the 2.5 kernel is. Yay.
Yeah! That would be awesome... Then after we did THAT, we could tell them that they stink and if they try to use that old I'm rubber your glue routine, just yell real loud "NO, YOUR STUPID" and run out to your moms car so she can drive you home from the expo.
... For this game to come out! I just went on my super cool linux box and renamed all my OpenGL1.2.1 files to OpenGL2.0.0!!! I am soooo ready for doom3!
My previous employer, Jackson Laboratories - Mouse Genome Informatics Department, uses Sybase to store genetic sequences found in mice.... Sybase is quite robust if you can afford it.
Oracle isn't hard to setup.... I suppose if you didn't have any arms in which to control a mouse to hit the "Next" and "Finish" buttons then you may have a bit of difficulty, otherwise the graphical installer in easy to use.
Hear Hear!
I find this whole approach on deciding which software to use is a waste of time and probably in the long run, a waste of money. Which software you use should be based on two things: 1] Cost of the software and 2] Whether the software meets your needs in terms of user-friendliness and functionality. Linux = Better cost of software. Windows/Office = Most likely more familiar to state employees and therefore easier to use. Another point is that who is going to do upgrades/patches/installs if they decide to use Linux? Certainly, Any monkey can upgrade windows but when it comes to upgrading/patching linux, it takes some knowledge. What's going to happen is that the state will have to hire a consultant or maintenance person who is knowledgeable in the use of linux. If the linux boxes are not patched or upgraded, then they leave huge security holes to the world (the same amount or even more so then windows). Remember the SSH hack that came out a few months ago that allowed for users such as 'nobody' to login without a password? What if the state machines had been running that version of SSH and didn't have someone knowledgeable to fix it? Don't get me wrong.. I run several linux servers and when properly maintained, they are reliable and secure 1000000 times more then windows. It's just keeping them maintained that will be the problem.
Again, I apologize for my attempt at humor. I tried to be funny and apparently failed... failed badly. To whoever modded down my comment, thank you. I know I wouldn't have been able to look at my own face in the mirror if I had actually gotten a funny rating.

Tablizer: Psssst, Bob! I slept through most of my English classes... How do I spell accedetly?
Bob: Accidentally

You are apparently not dating my girlfriend too. (that is 5 people btw).
Wait.. I'm confused... Are 5 people NOT dating your girlfriend or are 5 people dating your girlfriend? Either way, It sounds pretty bad to me.
Not only is it funny but it's also completely on-topic due to the editors remarks.
the end user is someone on a dialup connection through a small ISP? Wouldn't a dos attack be hurting innocent users as well as the alleged downloader?

Think of the licensing fees!
:P
Yeah, They'll end up getting around $1.50 in licensing fees from the slashdot crowd
PS2? The thing is a computer (fairly powerful one, actually), and it sells for $200. And yeah, it has a linux operating system if so desired.
Did you even bother to read the initial article? They said that they were hoping for the government to purchase the simputers and then rent them to townspeople who would each purchase and keep their own smartcard for 1 to 2 dollars apeice.
Give him a computer and he will be able to afford the food, shelter, and medicine he needs in the future.
Ummm... Right. Because, as soon as you give a poor person a simputer, they're going to become great kernel hackers and get jobs at RedHat.
Thats right! Some of us are forced to drive *SHUDDER* BMWs ;)
