It was posted because it's cool that this guy did the hardware hack in the first place. Why do people build arcade cabinets when they could just run mame on a standard windows or linux box? BECAUSE IT'S FUN TO HAVE A PROJECT LIKE THAT. God.. I'm glad people like you aren't in charge of choosing what stories make it to slashdot or not.
The only problem with this is that, like you stated, it's a contract. The artists aren't forced in to anything. To say that there is nothing technically interesting in it is quite insulting and in fact, not a very acurate.
