disney still owns the trademark on star wars activision releasing the code doesn't mean anyone can make and sell a star wars game based on it. you can release it for free as long as you don't make any revenue from it
you needed big data to make a show about corruption in Congress? i'm almost 40 and people have hated Congress as long as I can remember. Along with any president in their second term, with the exception of Bill Clinton.
cinema follows economic and social trends. the economic malaise of the 70's was filled by disaster movies. the baby boomers coming of age in the 80's brought us action movies and high school dramas
i know millionaires who haven't had smart phones until the last 6 months and rarely use the internet for anything more than checking their gmail. lots of ways to make millions of $$$ without tech
i have about 80GB of family photos that i really care about. they are on separate hard drives porn, who cares. its all in the cloud and all the same pirated movies? if you have to spend money to backup and manage pirated content you might as well buy DVD's or legit digital content like itunes important documents? i use dropbox for that
that journalist was one case. the article mentioned a lot of scary things, but no one has done any of it yet. and some of these services have been around for almost 2 years.

I'm all for cops busting concerts like this before they happen
The whole point is the concerts are being held in areas where the zoning laws prohibit concerts
Noise complaints are for the once in a while noise from neighbors The cops are ok on this because these are organized operations to conduct unlawful activity. Not as bad as the mafia and real organized crime, but same concept
a legit concert will be held in a place with the right permit, certified by the fire department for that many people and will have enough security. cops even moonlight doing security for legit concerts
if you hold a concert in an area where it will bother people and the place isn't zoned for a concert it deserves to be shut down. people have a right to relax at home with no noise
its not like you need five nines for every single server. where i work we have a few servers that can be failed over within a few minutes. and most are single servers with only RAID for redundancy. if they go down, yawn. until we get them back up
but when you go to the cloud they have to buy five nines and DR capability for all the customers. in the end its not really cheaper and if you look at the financials of a lot of cloud providers, they are losing money.
the other day i read about a company called Workday that does HR/Finance computing in the cloud. lots of hype and they have almost $273 MILLION in revenues. and over $100 million in losses. at some point they will have to raise prices to turn a profit. same with all the other cloud companies that are losing money
isn't that because there are lots of things a bank can hide off the public financial records? Not totally hide them but only make a small mention of some investments in the small print and keep the numbers off the main financial statements
every day they are hyping some tiny startup that is a copy cat. a year or two ago it was a new social media start up every week. then after square became popular there were payment startups every other day.
figures i've read before are 7/10 VC investments lose money. 2 return the investment value. and one is a facebook or google returning many times its original investments
not arguing that CO2 causes warming or that the earth is warming. i'm almost 40 and the climate is warmer in the north east then when i was a kid. warmer than 100 years ago. lots of evidence for that.
what i'm arguing is what is the normal temp supposed to be. if the 21st century is warmer than normal than a cold march is just going back to normal. 100 years ago this was a normal March, maybe a bit colder. the earth used to have some bitter cold weather in the winter time before global warming
after 30 years of world ending climate theories i don't trust them anymore. no matter what the weather is any given year it seems to be abnormal or end of the world. even if its colder than the year before.
too warm people scream global warming we get a cool March, which is the opposite of warming and the same people say its too cold
what exactly are normal temperatures supposed to be this time of year? at least for the northeast US?
we need one of the bitter winters from 1940 or earlier to teach people what normal temperatures are supposed to be like. Maybe a "normal" summer like 1815 when its like 50 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer
if you believe in global warming then the current cold temperatures are a return to normalcy and nothing to be alarmed about. up until the early 1900's when we had "normal" weather and temperatures NYC was so bitter cold that the rivers would freeze enough that people were able to walk from brooklyn to queens
its mostly the bloggers saying that the patent is broken. and then they quote a single sentence from a 50 page or longer patent application to try to prove their case.
look at the actuall paperwork filed. its a lot longer and more detailed than the click bait blog stories you rely on. the verge and others are nothing more than the yellow journalism and tabloids of the internet

they weren't free, they were paid for by the US Government along with the EU governments. who do you think pays for CERN?

i'm sure the government can make up a tax credit to get people to buy up SSD's
and plant some trees? then it evens out
