The intro images fits in with the overall theme nicely. I think it has some problems, all mentioned in the story, but it has promise. When did kingons and humans start hating each other? I know they had to meet first, but throughout the original series, they were the above all enemies. I'm going to keep on watching it for a couple of weeks and see how it goes. It wasn't the series premiere that I'd hoped for. My fav premiere is still TNG one, great characters, great story, with a good twist.

Trek seems to be de-evolving into soft porn. From 7of9, we all know what the whole point of her character was, now to this. It doesn't really fit into the series about exploration and discovery. I don't know, do we really need it? (after all, what's the internet here for anyway?)

A very large person having a glass of wine right before driving, say from a restaurant, will have a very small ammount of alchohol content, but could be still detected on your breath. Likewise, a very small person could possibly be over the limit, and the small ammount on their breath would not set it off. It all depends on the person, and being generalized on a detector built to be a feature of a car at low price probubly could not be made well enough to adjust. Also, the people who do drink and drive will catch wind of this and not buy any car with it installed. It's like the drug assemblys in schools, their optional. The site also states that it runs on Pentium class processors and all Power PC chips. If I'm not mistaked, correct me if I am, motorola's Dragonball processors used in Palm's products are a branch of Power PC. So the chalenge of porting to this platform is not hard at all. The real question is, whether this is the right move for the platform. Palm OS is tested, tried, and true. It works just the way it was intended. I believe that the BeOS platform would need much more extensive testing than the company has had a chance to perform before it could be released for Palm's products. If it isn't broken, why try and fix it? Palm OS is wonderful. Mainly, it works and is easy to use.

  23. Why Slackware is Better on Mandrake 8.1 Beta1 (Raklet) Released · · Score: 2, Interesting

I'm really a newbie. I'm not newest of the new, I can compile and have my own kernels/etc, but I still feel I have alot to learn before I can pull myself out of the newbie catagory, maybe low middle user or whatever...

I have used mandrake since 7.0, bought the power pack and upgraded since all the way to 8.0 every increment. Mandrake allways gave me a feeling of bloat and being unfinished. The install was nice, but all the setup and configure tools afterward seemed half done. They would work some of the time but not allways and not ever flawlessly. I allways ended up going and configuring everything manually. It also filled up my HD with programs that weren't documented or linked to anywhere. Just wasting space, not letting me know they were there or what they could do for me.

Also has anyone tried compiling a new kernel on a mandrake machine? It's a pain. They include all these extras in the kernel that if you give the system a new one it craps it's pants. I applaud their efforts in making a newbie distro, but I love my Slackware. The install is slightly less user friendly, but it is easy, quick and best of all it works. The system runs perfectly and it has just the software that I want and use, no crap . I have recompiled many kernels on it, mostly recompiles because I have forgotten something or another, and never have had any problems. It's also the little things, like having fortune run in the login script. It's just a slick and wonderful distro.

As soon as anyone gets their feet wet with Mandrake I highly recomend using Slackware. The best distro.

It all boils down to basic economics; if you don't like it, do as I do and don't buy it. The product will fail in comparison to the actual books and will fade away. I have to say that my leather bound books that I can read anytime I want look alot more impressive than any file on a HD that you can no longer access.
