FCC audio division's regulations have done little to stop AM and satellite radio from broadcasting right-wing streams-of-consciousness throughout the lower 48 states.
Perhaps you should have mentioned that you want to censor people you disagree with instead of assuming that everyone on Slashdot happens to have your same brave wave pattern.
Without knowing about the specific design, a good guess would be one of two things (perhaps both). This satt is obviously a low power device with a 1 watt transmitter. So its battery requirements are not large. So they could have packed extra batteries that they could switch out every so often as one went bad. Another thing that they might could do is operate just when the sun is available, like what trustworthy Oscar 7 is doing now.
Actually they did have upgrade processors available most of the time in different forms. Here's an interesting history of Cyrix, a third party x86 cpu supplier.
i beg to differ. Other countries have FM support for their cellphones. It's just in the US big corporations and special interests expect complete control of their platforms and what there is on them.
I somewhat disagree* about putting networks in place before disaster, because the disaster can happen where your network is not. Amateur radio has always had a strong portable emphasis anyways.
What is needed is a different methodology and different equipment if necessary. That's what hams do. They create what's needed to do more with less and be more effective as they create and use state of the art.
That's what brought packet radio into being in the first place.
*I do think that as time goes on emergency links will become increasingly important.
Bing search is much better than it used to be. I feel great about using it all the time unless I really need to dig on a topic. Which case switching temporarily to google will be able to offer up additional unique search results that I do not see on Bing about 1 or possibly 2 out of 5 times.
Clearly Microsoft is catching up to google, which is a good thing. Plus those homepage pictures Bing has are always fantastic.
They will harden them to some extent. There might be some high initial cost to doing so, but the curve will fall steeply because parts will be interchangeable. They will easily be fixed on board the submarine quickly and efficiently if need be after swapping them out instantly.
Also, I always thought that Microsoft was an excellent hardware company whose stuff has a build quality that is on par with anything being made (regardless of how poor I think some of their software products happen to be at the same time!).
I hope that the military can make more decisions like this in the future.
It's the playtime project of someone who has enough money to purchase & destroy multiple iPhones. It'd be easier and of better value to add a lightning port & a better quality DAC in the earphones.
This was my thought, kinda. Nothing really was accomplished by doing this mod as he was still using the crappy adapter to get audio, albeit dissembled and crammed into the case.
Plus as a middle aged worker I don't feel like I would be valued by a SV company.
Truly, you're meat for their meat grinder to make sausage with. Because they have so many people clamoring for the SV lifestyle they can treat employees as a disposable commodity. I'm not sure why someone would want to even vacation there.
Writers can be a bit weird when it comes to their equipment. It may well be that he still used an ancient machine to actually write his novels that he had been using for some time.
The question needs to be asked as to why exactly manufacturers are doing away with the removable battery. While all the "quick charge" -like features are quite attractive, the fact is the battery will still have a hard time keeping up with heavy users without overheating.
The only answer I have is that companies really want you to upgrade your phone sooner and throw the old one away rather than repairing and keeping what you have. Which is easy to do when the first thing to go is the battery and you can replace it yourself.
Some of the best and funniest Slashdot threads came from this patent, so it wasn't all a loss. And I bet many Slashdotters kept on doing business with Amazon despite what has to be one of the crappiest patents ever,
The fact that you think you know what I have been watching and say with a straight face that it is "truly dangerous" shows just how full of horseshit that you and your ilk are.
How soon before we see a "purge" like what his happening now at Youtube with all conservative content? Censorship is running rampant on Youtube with videos AND comments being deleted outright. And by the way, if you equate conservative content with the Alt-right or Nazis; then go to hell. And the same applies if you deny it happening or justify it.
I'm an adult, and I can decide for myself what to watch or what not to watch. Something that evil-doing Google seems to have lost grasp of. That seems to be all the rage these days, protecting special people from being offended with some censorship here, some more censorship over there and maybe toss in a job firing. Not to mention their attempt at 're-educating' me by throwing videos I don't want to watch in my face.
Many copyright holders will not force a takedown but instead select the option to "receive the revenue" instead and leave the video up.
Having many shows generate revenue on youtube can be a very lucrative business instead of having them just sit on a shelf somewhere.
The fact is if you are not streaming your content somewhere now, your content is worth less than a rock out back. if people can not find your stuff they just move on to one of the other countless options they have.
That's why quota systems at companies aren't going to fix the problem.,
Is it a 'problem though?" I'm far, far more concerned about age discrimination than the fact that a minority of women have decided to take up the computer sciences at college.
Make the company bleed out a little bit. Nothing makes a company act straight other than the threat of losing money.
No. This is useless and false, and does nothing to deter future crimes. Megacompanies think nothing of paying a slap-on-the-wrist fine as they merely see it as the cost of doing business. The deal as it stands is much better as long as the executives actually go to PMIA prison
This is the first time (in a very, very long while) that I have seen a notable example of a white collar criminal doing hard time. The reason why it's so important is that boardroom executives need to see that there is a very real consequence of them going to jail for being criminals and knowingly breaking the law.
The huge problem with the 2007 banking collapse is we didn't see a single banker do hard time. Instead, we saw large fines that were written off by the companies that they worked for and it was given nary a thought. The message is out, you can go ahead and break the law, and get away with it by having your company pick up the tab.
Until now, that is. Though it is a "plea deal" and not a trial, I consider this groundbreaking now not unlike the arrival of EV vehicles even.
If we saw more white collar jail-time prosecution of crime on Wall Street our financial system would be much more stable and better.
Let's not forget that when Facebook went public there were only around 50 employees.
Facebook is not a large job creator. They probably have subcontracted what they can of most of their work to India. Their primary goal is to find a docile, compliant workforce that has a low turnover rate naturally wired in by the H1B progam.
Apple users love this kind of thing. The next iphone release they'll be camping outside the night before. Losing data and favorite apps is Apple doing you a favor to help you justify buying their next luxury product. That's just the small price to pay to be a member of the Church of Apple.
The better option is to not spend the resources and time of a large corporate news organization to hunt down the private information of an individual who by all accounts made a forgettable and worthless animation about them. In other words, ignore it like all the other nonsense on the web eventually gets ignored.
I would think that CNN reporters would have better things to investigate other than a 15 year old in the basement making memes on his computer.
CNN is guilty of coercion here and needs to be charged with a crime just so they can be made an example of.

Thanks for posting this up Bruce, it's a wonderful story.

Boeing's relatively new "Dreamliner" has the passenger cabin pressurized at 6,000 feet over the customary 8,000, besides having more advanced air filtration.

This is for people who question if matters. it's a must read actually.
Writers can be a bit weird when it comes to their equipment. It may well be that he still used an ancient machine to actually write his novels that he had been using for some time.
This very well could be the case. Wordstar was a wildly popular DOS word processor back in the day.
A number of authors really liked it.

The content you are referring to is truly dangerous.
And that is for me to decide. Not a bunch of SJWs (who thinks the "ok" hand symbol is somehow white power) to protect the perpetually offended.

I truly hope that reddit avoids this mess.

But BLM itself doesn't stand for violence, nor is that its goal.
They most certainly do. Here they are marching for dead cops in New York and Dallas There was protest in London with the same chant.
It's time for the left to own their own alt-left bullshit as they seem to like to call out the alt-right at every turn as your post exemplifies.
I hope they prevail and some sort of precedent is established.
You would think that companies might would learn after Lockheed Martin's flat out millions of dollars loss for their blatant and rampant age discrimination.

That's the "better option" for prosecutors.
