A friend of mine who works in the industry (he is running a network for a big graphic place so he knows his stuff) says photoshop and gimp have been feature-parity for all intensive purposes since photoshop 5.0 and that dates back to 1999

Bwahahahahahaha! If by that you mean that the newest GIMP has most of the non-print functionality of photoshop 5, then you're pretty correct. I know it's hard for all you non-print guys out there in gimp / pirated photoshop land, but there's a reason it's $800. Apart from the 30 people who scrape by with corel, you can't do print design without Illustrator or Photoshop. I promise you, no matter what your mate who "does the network for print guys" or your local "KwikColor" shop with a shitty 10 thousand dollar colour laser tells you, it _IS_ a lot different to doing logos for amateur web design for your local church.

That's if you just count kw->BTUs, but that's not what they're talking about. They're talking about a complete system. You can't heat water efficiently for your showers with coils because they take time to heat up, they waste energy when they're cooling down and you're not in the shower, and because it just takes so darn long to do it without a huge amount of coil (which would use more energy in heatup / cooldown), you have to store it hot. And storing something hot is just about the least effecient thing you can do in this universe, and as such "the system" tends to be quite inefficient. With a magnetron it's not seeping heat into the air while it cools down (well not within an order of magnitude the same amount), it's more or less instant-on. So you're not leaking your power into the air in your heater cupboard and the frame of your house. The only thing newsworthy about this though is that it's taken so long for someone to think up and implement a viable microwave solution.

Of course, my ex housemate ben only knows to get out of the shower when it gets cold, so I apologize for my mate using up all the world's energy when he gets one of these. On the plus side he'll eventually wash down the sink and his missus will turn it off.

    1. Apple will shortly be selling overpriced PCs, that can run OSX...

    2. Those with OSX-envy no longer need to buy a mac to run OSX, since it WILL be hacked and on bittorrent within a month of release. The 'our OS drives people to this overpriced hardware" fallacy will instantly cease to exist.

    3. Apple is now just selling to the "it just works" crowd, the hardcore mac nerds, and the "iPod Halo" crowd. These people aren't going to buy OSX to run on a Dell.

    4. Eventually, Apple will realise they've been successfully competing on hardware alone for the last 12 months (or whatever), rather than using their OS to overcharge people for slower equipment like they used to.

    5. OSX will be in a box on a shelf, to install on any old wintel box with mainstream hardware, with more and more OSX86 drivers being created by third parties anyway.
