Here's an airliner that was converted to a fuel tanker that two guys just climbed aboard and flew off in. The story is that it was "most likely" stolen to be used for smuggling. For some reason that doesn't make me feel safe.

I got tired of receiving e-mails at 2 in the afternoon saying that the group was getting together at 5:00pm on the other side of the county to hand out phamplets at the store or whatever. I gave up after the last election which was one with some important tax-payer issues and they didn't have yard signs available until two days before the election and no canvasing in the area, even with a candidate running specifically on the tax issue. I'll still vote LP when they've got a good candidate running but the local chapter needs to get their act together.

As has been pointed out, good books on clustering are hard, if not impossible to find. Oh well, back to the howto's for me.

On the funny side, my director started the conversation with "have you ever heard of a Beowulf Cluster"? He didn't understand why I couldn't stop laughing. I obviously spend waaaaaay to much time on /. . Anyway, he apparently read something in Scientific American recently about clustering and wanted to apply it to an auditing project that we're working on. Not a cluster but some of the underlying theory gave him an idea of dealing with all of the varibles we have.

As an example of "guilty until proven innocent", back when the RIAA first started going after Napster the company hosting my website got scared, went through their servers, and killed every website that had any mp3's on it with zero warning. Now, my site was for my band and had mp3's on it for songs that my band had written and hold the copyrights for. My site was thrown in the bit-bucket along with every other site. The thing that peeves me is that it took minutes to kill the site and three weeks to get it running again. Obviously I've moved to a different host.

I'm glad that Verizon held out as long as they could. I get the feeling that if the RIAA had approached my old webhost that they would have turned over all the names with no questions asked.

I'm also closest to the front door so I get to deal with every salesman that walks in off the street trying to sell us something (small office, no receptionist). I'm amazed at the things people are trying to sell me. Do companies really buy T-1 connectivity or $50,000 printers from someone that just walked in off the street? At least in the old days of AT&T if something broke you knew it was AT&T's problem. In my office I have to deal with four different companies. One company installed the internal system, SBC owns the lines, our "value added reseller" uses SBC's lines, plus we have another company for data and long distance. A few months ago our VAR decided to take us off of SBC's switch at the CO and put us on their own. Of course they sent out a letter saying that this would cause a 20 minute outtage but we should not notice a difference other than that. The problem was that their hardware couldn't handle the distance to the CO and kak'd most of our phone service. Of course everyone blamed everyone else and it took three months to get it fixed. What should have been an issue of "ok, VAR, you broke it, just put everything back to the way it was" ended up having me get all of the company's involved in fixing their part and basically setting up our billing and route programming from scratch.

I agree with what you say about compile times in school forcing programmers to check their code. Back in the dark ages when I was a junior in high school I was taking a COBOL class. The mainframe that compiled the programs was located down in the state capitol. We would work on five programs at a time. Each night the compiling was done as a batch job, meaning for each of your five programs you got *one* compile per 24 hour period. We made damn sure that every compile was critical. Now, over the summer before my senior year they installed a new system that linked to the local community college where you could compile to your heart's content all day long. There was a definate difference between the troubleshooting philosophies of the two classes. The class that I was in would still go over programs with a fine-tooth comb before compiling while the younger class would compile after every change just to see what would happen. Of course, now that I'm in the real world with deadlines...

In there they publish the names and addresses of people that have had run-ins with the law over the past week. My current local paper posts blotters for the entire county so I can read who got picked up for a drunk and disorderly a couple of towns over and who was picked up on an assault charge in my hometown. Keep in mind that this information is published long before a person ever goes to trial, so much for "innocent until proven guilty".
