Video on the logic board most likely. =( Doesn't sound like the LCD. This happens over time when the case and logic board flex each time you open the screen. If it flexed too far, you'll get the traces cracking which will lead to that type of behavior. Apple had the problem with their first G3 iBooks, but I thought they had remedied it. Ever had it repaired? It may not have been assembled properly (there's something like 60-80 screws on the way into a harddrive replacement), which could lead to this.
Apple laptop service tech guy here. =) Taken a few of them apart in my day.
Hate to tell you, but it sounds like bad RAM. If the system is locking up consistently, get an Apple tech or an Apple Diagnostic disk and check it out. There's no need to suffer needlessly. =) Visual styles be damned, no system has one fluid interface in every application. That's just splitting hairs.

My $.02
You obviously don't understand the market this is aimed at. Anyone who knows how to do this will DO this, but for my money, the convenience of having a device that JUST carries anything in my iTunes library over to my TV with ease is perfect for my needs. I have a Core 2 Duo Mac to do my ripping and buying of music. I just want something easy to watch the movies I buy and rip on my TV without having to mess with too many extras.
We've been doing this for 6 years now. We built a 70ft tower to get a lawyer here in town on, and this tower was built ON HIS ROOF, guide cables and all. All that, just so he had low ping times to one of the greatest Quake II servers ever, quakeII.kansas.net.
Call me naive, and I've been running Apples for a while now, but do you even NEED AV software at this point? There are no viruses to date for the Mac, and frankly, I'm doubting the possibility in the future. Again, probably naive, but I've put a lot of faith in Apple's engineering team.
All I see is Taco in front of a screen with a big fat middle finger lifted. Given this is a dupe, bad spelling, bad grammar, and proof that the URL/title checker would break, I had to laugh.
Have fun, Taco. This is amusing, to see the masses awash in anger over a day that has been a tradition for YEARS now.
Apple's been using up all the stock generally, or at least that's been my understanding from a lot of the articles I've been reading. The tech will eventually move over into the commercial retail/OEM sector, but it'll probably be a year or two more before that happens.
Total speculation, as I can't find any of my articles I've read to back that up.
I just have one word, and I mean it most lovingly

That's fine and dandy and all, but if you have a love for the tech, you're digging across the 'Net, reading manuals and peer reviews, product details, howtos, faqs and the like.
This is how I worked my way into the IT Field.
He got a degree without really caring about the tech.
I was trying to be complimentary, but I just had my friend who graduated with a CS degree as me the procedure to setup a wireless network in their house.
He, however, is a classic example of getting into the market for the money, but no love of the technology.
C'est la vie. He still compliments my websites I've worked on, but I think if anyone who considers code poetry saw my work, they'd gag.
My code for all my websites are RIDICULOUSLY horrible, but the function is there. I never claim to be efficient, but if anyone with a CS degree ever saw my Perl/PHP, I'd be laughed off the web...
now where's my php.ini file again? I need to go turn on global variables for this hack I'm workin' on...
My home, my first job, and my second job are all conveniently within 6 blocks of each other. Work by 10, lunch at 2, off at 7, home for dinner and done by 7:30ish, nap from 7:30-8:30, shower/shave for the bar, there by 9, out of their anywhere from 2:15-3AM, home to shower off the night grunge, some tea or warm milk, and in bed by 3 to 4, rinse repeat.
I do have nights off like last night to catch up and reenergize and/or go out.
Has affected my webdev stuff I like to do though. Not much time in there to code, but it pays the bills and Christmas will be hella good this year.
What you fail to realize is that the interface is distinctly unique. The way email interfaces are designed in the future are going to be influenced by Gmail.
" Start to pull down Service Pack One; per Microsoft's instructions, all firewalls are turned off."
Firewall is on before I connect to my cable modem if you're going to be DUMB enough to connect it without a hardware firewall protecting the machine. Get an intermediary device like a Linksys or Netgear router, and now you don't have to worry about it. And seriously. Don't install your AV until AFTER you've installed all your updates. You're only complicating the registry before it needs to be.
Seriously, is Slashdot a "News for Nerds", or "HOWTOs for N00bs"? Some of these questions would be better handled by Google and half a brain about networking.

Genius device, personally.
Man, I don't care how good you think you are, it's still fun and entertaining for everyone involved.
Yeah, I don't make the rules, I just tell people about them.
And yes, ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK. I'm a KU man myself. =)

It seems every device the general SlashDot concensus loves, bombs.
Counter that to the iPod, which the editors and several posters thought was, I quote, "lame."
Maybe we should be lamenting the new idea and bitching about lack of PCI slots or something.

Resident Evil.
What school, if you don't mind me asking?

Then lock down the AP with MAC filtering and WEP, and secure any shares (Folders or printers) with passwords.
Voila. Is it REALLY that hard?
