    How can it be "up to 50% DOAs"? Something is either DOA or not....it's an absolute figure over time.

    Secondly, back up this claim that Macs are "up to 50% DOA". I think Apple would be out of business if that were true; based purely on the cost of swapping out DOA hardware!

    Macintosh hardware is, in my considerable experience, better quality than most major PeeCee brands. Based on DOAs and hardware failures.

    Get a dual 1.25Ghz Mac. Cheaper than the IRIX box. More friendly than Linux. Better build quality than most PeeCees.

    ...they seem to have some pretty robust update servers.....I also grab every update pretty much immediately and never have trouble getting them.

    Funny how Apple can have software update facilities that must be handing out several hundred thousand 25Mbyte updates a day.....and many websites can't even cope with the traffic Slashdot sends their way ;-)

    Because light guns rely on the horizontal and vertical blanking that's inherently a CRT thing. :-)

    Plasma and LCDs don't refresh that way, ispo facto: your light gun won't work.

    (1) It's not a battleship, it was a patrol ship....quite a small one at that.

    (2) It's not used as a "cruise ship" now -- it's the personal vessel of an entrepreneur.

    (3) As for how viruses would have gotten aboard (because they don't "travel through the ether") -- the ship has satellite Internet and is hooked-up to DSL when moored.

    All that said, it's an ugly fsck'ing boat that dude's got!

    The Canadian government has been working on a bill to make open source software illegal....only commercially sold and supported software will be legal as of June 1st 2003.

    This all stems from the fact that the Canadian government has been in negotiations to sell British Columbia to Microsoft since 1999.

    I'm sitting here reading this on a TiBook.....I can *just about* here the hard drive heads move....

    However, if boot up Warcraft III the fan does kick in.....but it's a hell of a lot quieter than most systems still. Much quieter than my Sony laptop.

    Sorry to be pedantic, but holograms are created with interference patterns using a laser on specially treated photographic materials.

    What's referred to here are not, infact, holograms by definition. It's merely a 3D display technology.

    (Holography is a hobby of mine...it's amazing how much fun a guy in his bathroom can have with a laser and some chemicals!).

    ...some Linux User Group meetings.....I can safely argue that there is much less difference between chimps and Linux geeks than previously thought. Surprisingly, the chimps had less body hair and better hygiene than most Linux geeks ;-)

    I've seen those polarized screens for laptops that reduce the LCDs viewable angle so that people on planes etc. can't shoulder-surf....but this concept is a just a bit extreme!

    I mean, who works in highly sensitive areas *AND* needs to hide the data on the screen that badly?

    And if you truly do need "for your eyes only", what about some sort of HMD (Head Mounted Display)?

    (Anyone remember those PC Private Eye devices? They used an oscillating mirror and an LED array to "paint" a text screen in the users field of vision.)

    Pouring liquid nitrogen from a cryocanister without gloves on into an open container without a funnel. Really, really smart! I'm guessing these boys wouldn't know an MSDS if it hit them over the head.

    Also, I'm curious as to why they thought they needed liquid nitrogen? It's probably a little over-the-top....anyone with college level organic chem can come up with a whole list of mixtures that reach precise, predictable temperatures....they could have worked out what level of thermal conductivity was required and then chosen a cooling agent.

    Yeah, size would be an issue (*giggle*)....plus the existing Power4 core doesn't really meet the needs of a desktop machine, as previously stated.

    Can you imagine an Apple TiBook running on a Power4? ;-) 4 minutes battery life and the size of a life raft.
