The L.A. Times had an interestng article about a Japanese chef who worked for him for a while and then escaped. It included such info as Kim Jong Il II (sp?) has EVERY GRAIN of rice hand selected by a staff of women - imperfect ones are discarded. Food is cooked over fires made from a certain type of tree on a remote mountain that reportedly has special powers. Water too is from a "special" location. Made everyone in his hunting party take the same drugs as he was taking, after a spill from a horse. Always "wins" every competition that he is in.
He's either whacked or really, really different - I vote for the former.
We had a typewriter that did this - an old mechanical one. The letter placement can happen automatically if the individuals tend to print to the left or right of the given strike space. Nothing really fancy.
If you write a letter that's like "My PHB is a flamming *sshole who smells like vomit, kills babies" - it will be dismissed, and thrown out. If you write a mature letter about why you are leaving, the company might actually enact some changes, making it more pleasant for other people who are there possibly who are in the same boat as you. Be constructive, mature and professional - you'll be bound to run into some of these folks again.
Now having said that is it that your boss is malicious, and you want to take an eye for an eye? Have you really been an exemplary employee? So you really want to make work unpleasant for the rest of the possibly innocent folks by doing something juvenille?
The best thing to do is to give your 2 weeks notice, and WORK 9-5 dilligently, but at an unstressed level. Who knows, you might encourage a little velvet revolution after you leave.
When I was in residency I worked 80-120 hrs/week for 5 years, and still was able to go out once, sometimes twice a week. Hell If I only worked 80 hours -it was a vacation and I could go out 3-4 times. The trick is that sometimes working for 36 hours straight eats a big chunk of the time. Being on call Mon and Thurs could get you to about 85 hours for the week, and you might get the entire weekend off. Granted I am quite comfortable on only 3-5 hours sleep night, and have been doing that for 20 years. Yes I look, and am healthy - maybe get sick once a year with a cold, and I look much younger than I am.
Of course everyone has to fit around your schedule, and it forces you to make choices of what you want to do. I stopped watching TV entirely for 5 years, except for an occasional rented DVD. Rehearse with my band once a week, only date a girl more than once if I really liked her., etc.
Many people can do this, you'd be surprised how much time most people spend d*cking around, wasting it.
avoided making the phone call. I just asked the secretary point blank if I could call so she'd talk to me instead of the phone. She got the idea. I got her to place the rest of the lines on hold and she talked to me.
I started reading this thinking it was some sort of car anti-theft system, like Lo-Jack. When I got to the part about supporting firing from cars, I was kinda like uhhh, cool!? This is some kind of anti car-jacking device too. When I got to the part about "supports drive by shootings" I started thinking "All right, this manufacturer has gone a little overboard, and is gonna get sued or something"
I know there are plenty of great MMORPG out there that are FREE. I would like to play some of the others (City of Heroes, etc.) but am not willing to pay the $15 per month. I'm sure that the companies have looked at the inverse ratio of cost to # of players.
What would you be willing to pay as a subscription per month - I'd pay up to $5.
Open source works for exactly the same reason why you have someone else proofread your paper/thesis before you turn it in. You've seen it so many times, that you don't really look at it anymore. A fresh pair of eyes will spot all sorts of wrong things, or come up with a more elegant way of stating something.
I mean seriously - if something is important to you, do you just turn it in w/o someone else giving it the once over? My wife reads every talk I give and vise-versa. WE ALWAYS catch mistakes that the other person has made.
I imagine that the opwer requirements for a probe to broadcast anything that could outshine earths would be formidable and probably not feasable. The Voyager(or Pioneer?) probe that recently escaped our solar system (past pluto) after 15-20 years was undetectable.
We'd need something with a renewable energy source, like a bussard ramjet, to be able to broadcast a decent signal strength.
Many people get some relief from chondroitin and glucosamine. He might want to try that. I don't think anyone has really looked into a large series of hips to see if carticel was effective, and I doubt it will be. Hip replacement surgery is one of the most patient satisfying operations we have - most people love their new pain-free hip. Your Dad sounds a little fearful to me - you might want to find out why he is so resistant to the idea.
As far as the jaw surgery - I don't operate above the neck, but soft tissue in general does tend to adhere to bone better than porous coated metal. I guess they want to eventually implant teeth into this guys jaw which might be hard with an all metal jaw. Some of this does seem a little "experimental" to me.
Aside from having the right shape, joints are ALOT more involved than that. Ligaments, joint capsule, muscle coverage, innervation, etc. You can get the right shape, but that's only a small part of what makes a fully functional, pain free joint.
Carticel does grow cartilage, but a different type than what is normally found on joint surfaces. Many orthopods are losing interest in it, because it doesn't live up to the expectations, and it's not worth it.
I am a bone tumor surgeon by profession. We can replace alomost anything in your body, but your original equipment is still the best by far. Just because you can make some bone and implant it, doesn't mean it'll worke better than a similar shaped piece of metal with some porous ingrowth coating..
Cloning! OMG they've cloned light. Hopefully the US Gov't won't make it illegal.

There are many, many reports on iPODLounge (the main iPOD support forum) of people who install SP2, lose their iPOD functionality, and then need to roll back their XP system to pre-SP2 in order to get their iPODS to function again.
I just got a new 4th gen iPOD, which I can write to on Linux, but can't get to work on my XP-SP2 Windows dual boot machine.
Does anyone remember the scandle a little while ago when Half-Life2 came out and the NVidia cards were doing all sorts of crazy things to show misleading frame rates (like special optimizations only for HL2 framerate tests, etc). I imagine that thiese are real frame rates, but I wonder.
We lost a great one today, Hats off to those who enrich ours and everyones lives, thru great discoveries and triumphs. This really depresses me. - somebody please discover something earth shattering.
Well I was going to type O.R. (an abbrev. for operating room) but I changed my mind halfway through typing the word and came up with the above mentioned typo in the grandparent post. I was called away before I had a chance to correct the typo, and thus the resulting post.
I won't deign to respond to your trollish remarks as to the current state of medical care in the USA.
P.S. the pt (patient) woke up and is moving his hand and fingers just fine.
1 No one pays for bounce mesgs - there's never a fee, just like today
2: Spam is by far the largest user of band width in e-mail. I've seen estimates of up to 80% e-mail is spam, and 15% of TOTAL interent traffic is spam. It's basically a check that can be performed with very little data sent, on the probably the ISPs machine.
3 This should make e-mail more trusted and less flakey.
4: You already trust the people from work and your family/friends. Who else do you need to "trust" - if it's a real e-mail mesg, then it's no prob. If it's fake - you make 10 cents.
5: People will probably never see this, if they are not in the "scheme".
6:Spammers essentially do this now with their milions of e-mail mesgs sent. This tactic would be unsuccessful, since it would prevent them from sending out any of their own e-mails.
7: The fee per mesg will probably be so small, so that 50 cents can last a long time. If it's getting depleted, then your e-mail habits are somewhat suspicious. Why would your friends charge you to read your e-mail?
8: Mesgs need to be verified back to origin. Unverifyable ones are highly suspicious for being spam are are either not sent , or never read.
9: Escrow DDOS will not work, since the fee per account wil make it expensive. ISPS will probably handle this and it should never hapen anyway..
10: Again a "reputation system" will never develop. Once your trusted friends are verified, they make it onto your whitelist and you never worry about it again. There is no need for a rep system - you never need to know it.
1: Your escrow account will only have a nominal amount (say 50 cents), and thus prevents this type of scamm.
2: Who e-mails porn sites? Most web-sites that charge for service ike Transgaming, have you fill out a web form, which you then supply your e-mail address. People will wise up very soon (like one messg and 1 cent) and not e-mail dubious sites.
3: It's not designed to be a profit system, but your ISP could hold your money, say as a small deposit with your account.
4: From the concerns you raise, I'm not so sure that you read the article
WHen you sign up for a e-mail ilst, you submit your e-mail address and theirs and are entered on the "whitelist", which effectively prevents you from charging the fee and thus prevents scamming (signing up for many lists and then turning around and calling it spam and getting money).
THe system also has built in safety to prevent someone from charging an exorbitant amount of money to your account. Your e-mail set-up rules/acount, can be set to not deliver to anyone who charges over a certain amount (again this could be as low as a fraction of a cent)
In order to stop spam then fee would only have to be a nominal amount, like 1/100 of a cent, to ruin their profit margins. SOme sort of group standard will come about - like everyon'es fee will be 1 cent. *ssholes who try to "profit" by charging $100 for "spam" e-mails, just won't get any mail. I like this solution a lot.
