In most of other countries in the world there generally is an even tighter association between companies from those countries and their spy agencies(FIS's). The US (and maybe the FVEY countries, I am not sure there) is somewhat unique in that there is basically no real provisions for economic espionage (defined as spying aimed to obtain trade secrets (generally not of military application) and passing those on to the local companies (saving massive amounts in R&D money/time)). And because of that relationship there is often services offered back from those companies to those FIS's. Who needs a court when you are just helping out an organization that has saved you millions of dollars over time (and patriotism is also a factor in that decision as well)?
I think you are very naive if you think that this is a uniquely American (or a RUS, CHN, IRN) issue. It is very nuanced and occurs behind closed doors that you will almost never get a glipse of.
Color me suprised. Not. In all fairness I want all the other countries spy agencies to release a list of countries they spy in (in particular the national intelligence services of China, Russia, France, England, Germany and Israel). I bet you it would be a pretty similiar list.....
Just like in the computer world, those who get elevated rights should get increase scrutiny of their actions. Cops have elevated permissions in the real world (the blue code (getting away from certain crimes because they are cops), implied trust when testifying (if it is your word vs a cops in court, guess whose testimony gets trusted?)). All of which means that they should surrender a certain amount of privacy when they put on the badge (and now technology is finally allowing for this to happen).
Funniest comment in a while. If you think that Israel will ever disarm so long as they are surrounded by people who want their State destroyed, then you must share those drugs. From a historical perspective this will never happen, the entire Israeli Jewish State has one phrase imprinted in their conciousness, "Never again." When you have whackjobs like the leaders of Iran around you will never see them pre-emptively disarm that weapon system that they officially never have had.
For once (and based on most of my CS colleagues this will be a one time thing) these guys will learn what it is like to be the "pretty girl." Hired on their looks (American), expected to be there, act as eye candy and overall not be expected to perform as well as the guys who were hired for their brains....
Is already on display. I don't think it is going anywhere. It is at the Udzar Hazey Annex to the Air and Space Museum. Though it would be cool for the main downtown site to have on that actually went into space.
CBP (Customs and Border Patrol were around far before the creation of DHS... Customs in particular is one of the oldest missions of the US Government... it used to be the sole manner that the federal body could raise revenue). DHS is just a conglomeration of a number of other agencies that already existed with an extra layer of bureaucracy at the higher level... Maybe you can complain about the extra spending, but just getting rid of DHS won't make this stuff go away, the agencies will just revert to their previous Agencies/Departments that they were in prior to the creation of DHS....
Expansion of the mission/decrees really come from the top. I do not see _ANY_ substantive difference between the Bush administration and the Obama administration on matters such as this, since for different reasons they offer certain levels of control that both find politically useful (since you never cede power when you have the chance... look at the recent push for the renewal of the Patriot Act from the WH).
This really deserves even more mod points than the rest. A _VERY_ good analysis. The eternal fight of CND people, getting actionable intelligence (we want to fix it yesterday, they want to see what the BG are doing and also don't want to give away how they knew to listen in the first place).
I think I would have walked away right as he said that.... it would have been the easiest money I could ever make. Assualt charges on the individual and civil suit to the company.
ka-ching!!
psst... that is a secret... no need to mention that to people not in the know.. Those feeble minded folks who believe a couple of days of food and water and then the Government will arrive and help are useful sources of supply for those of us who are well equipped...
Wow... put down the ganja there zoomie....
I would definitely put the best of my 25-Series (Signal Series) Soldiers against the best that the AF has. Army Signal Soldiers have to deploy into conditions that boggle your mind (yes, there are military bases out there without golf courses.. shocking I know to the AF mindset) and have to get the comms up, and keep them them under high pressure environments (no comms means that people are dieing, need help, etc) with almost zero recognition from the combat arms (we, like IT departments around the world, only get noticed when there is a problem). My Soldiers have to think on their feet, deal with complex problems and often come up with novel solutions because there is no supply depot right around the corner (it probably takes days or weeks to get replacements). I don't expect my Soldiers to just follow orders, I expect them to provide me with solutions as they tell me what is wrong.
Our training takes Months, as an Officer I just completed my 13 week basic course and most of my Soldiers train for far longer than that.
and psst... Your Airmen take their satellite training from the Army. That is why I tend to see formations (ragged mostly) of Airmen (and Sailors and Marines (definitely not ragged)) at Fort Gordon (home of the Army Signal Corp) going to and fro from classes.
. A rifle bullet can travel many miles and can also go through walls etc. Not a good thing in a situation where there are a lot of innocents around
Outside of when I am wearing my military uniform I would never shoot my weapon with anything (outside of a paper target) other than hollowpoints. Its because I care (about everyone but the target I am shooting at... If I am shooting at another person they are probably going to die). If I am shooting I just want to hit what I am shooting at, not anything else.
Detection Grid?!? Along the entire coastline of the US? Bwahhhhhhahahahahaha!!!! Funniest statement I have heard today.... It would take a miracle to hear these suckers... given that our ASW for our surface combatants is a joke and our sub fleet is severely depleted and deployed....
Because if you follow the rules and get your ticket stamped at the border and enter the country legally the US is a FAR more accomodating society than either the Japanese or Europeans. There are multiple generations of people living in those countries that are considered "Gast arbeiters" or "Gaijin" even if they have been born there. For as much trouble as the US has sometimes on the immigration issue (which has been around since the founding of this country, this current round just a variation on the same theme) the US has always accommodated and incorporated new citizens.
That and compared to a good sound system TV speakers are crap.... I have the same TV and one the wires were all set off went the sound on the TV (I was not very impressed with the WH speakers anyway).
What your arguement ignores is that in the long run these people would be better with a smaller fuel efficient car and periodically rent for that once every so often event where they need that capacity....
That the artist and his company are getting a good chunk of business driven their way... I know that I was interested enough that I ordered the graphic novel that they had on their site.

Hmm... Gee, its not like we dont have something like this already..... May I refer you to NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) which publishes SP (Special Publications, optional standards on how to perform IT related activity) and also publishes FIPS (Federal Information Protections Standards, mandatory requirements that every agency must follow). And of course our friends up at Ft. Meade (NSA) weigh in every so often to the community. And as to intelligence sharing, there is a new IC position, who actually assumed that from the Deputy Chief of Intelligence at the CIA.
Too be honest the ones with the low scores are probably the most truthful and probably most concerned. As a federal IT security worker am VERY suspicious of any organization reporting greater than an 80% score. Either they are too incompetant to determine the actual scope of their problems or they are lying (or more PCish they are misrepresenting the facts). The former is your incompetance claim, the latter is the standard bureacratic ricebowling (ie, make myself look good while those saps out there actually tell the truth). At least the ones with the low scores have an incentive to correct it, and probably have some grasp of the scope of their problem. A number of them went down because they actually spent time discovering the extent of their situation, and given the scope are probably only now able to start making a dent in the work that needs to be done to fix things.
Oh what the heck..... I am actually pleased with the poster that you are replying to took a stand and stated his preference for our system over the others... For too long (at least here in the States) we have had to suffer under this belief that all systems out there have some value and that none are superior to others. Its nice to see someone take a stand like he did and back our system of government and economy. And to back him up, I will also say that its a hell of a lot better than the other options that are available right now. Though I have enough cynicism in me that even if we achieved his state wars could still happen.. Any system that involves people is going to involve conflict, its human nature.

Such a sad thing.... Not.
Oh, he is an "artist". You just need to put "scam" in front to truly appreciate the art....
