This officer deserves a reprimand for this but not outright dismissal. If there is a pattern of this with an officer then dismissal would be appropriate but we do need to cut people some slack when it comes to things like this.

I would say that a public apology from the Police Department and an official statment saying that what the person did was not illegal would be nice as well. This would help dispel the image that photographing the police is a crime.

I do not like abuse of power by the police we do need to at least admit that they are human beings doing a nessecary and stressful job. They will make mistakes and should be required to admit and pay for those mistakes as appropriate.

Some might point out that the police force being versed in the law should be explaining to the callers that owning a gun is legal. If the gun owner was doing something suspicious then the cops should investigate but as long as you obey the law the cops should back off. I agree that this is a factor that the police need to weigh when deciding if they should respond, but it shouldn't be the only factor.

Just because you found an outdated definition of a term (theft/stealing) dosent make you right. Understand that we have to adhere to the letter and the spirit of the law

I have to drag my ass down the hall and beg someone to give me a telnet window so I can kill X myself. "Why don't you get Windows," they ask. Oh, the shame of it all, the humiliation!

If you were using windows and somethin had frozen / blue-screened you would have pushed the reset button and had to reboot. This could cause all sorts of damage to the filesystem, registry, etc... not to mention waiting for scandisk to run isn't any fun.

With linux you telnet in and kill you X server and then you trot back to your room and continue using your computer like nothing happened. I can't see why this is a source for humiliation.

    Unsung

So therefore the award was for heroes of the linux community that havent had songs written about them. I can only think of two poeple with songs. Linus and RMS. RMS has the Free Software Song and They both are in the the techno remix of the same song. If anyone knows of anyother songs please tell me.
