Lately i've been rearing my ugly head at this page. The author has schematics for interfacing it to the LPT port, as well as software examples. I built my own interface using a rapid prototype board.

For those too scared to venture into building the interface themselves, I found this unit for less than $20 bucks from a company called ACS out in Florida. Unfortunately due to economic conditions, I cannot even afford that, but great looking product guys.

$500 is tooo much, i'd rather just interface steppers through the LPT and save an extra $380.

    The Maxtor was 40gb

The Atlas obviously had less tracks too seek through than the Maxtor because it had 1/4 of the total number of tracks the maxtor did. This would totally account for the 1/3 speed increase seen over the IDE solution.

Also to take into consideration is how much buffer each drive has. If I remember right, Atlas's have like 8 megs of buffer, while the 40 gig maxtors have like 2.

I look at it a little differently...

    A few YEARS back, I got myself a P4 1.4, latest gforce2gts, scsi 160 and an 18 gig drive.

The SCSI drive is dead, replaced by cheaper but higher capacity IDE's. The rest of the system is still intact.

The only game I really play alot is CS, so for me this system suits my needs just fine. In a few months or so, doom3 will be out, will I rush out and get a cheapo 9700 so I can get my FPS fix for the game?

    No! Absolutely not! Here's why..

I want a system that won't be out of date for what I want it to do. 2 years ago it was CS, and my system has lasted pretty well. Now it's doom3. Sure I could just get that cheapo AGP 9700, but you gotta remember, next year is when we toss out AGP for PCI express.

Say hello new mobo/cpu/vidcard combo (possibly ram, since Rambus seems like a dead choice now) because now AGP is obsolete.

Let's not forget Dilbert was actually based from real experiences from within HP. (Yes PHB's are real)

Over the last 3 or so years the birthplace of HP Silicon Valley, has seen no less than 300,000 jobs either eliminated or shipped overseas. That's just one huge bite out of the total number of united states jobs.

Let's talk about that number real quick, the $70,000,000 million dollars for 2 jets. That's not even accounting for maintence, flight crew, and airport costs. Could the exec's attend virtual meetings using robots and telepresence? Sure, if they knew how to use a gamers "WADS" interface. Would it cost $70,000,000? I highly doubt it.

I read all the time about the problem with higher forms of robotics, and the problem of random terrain navigation does not become one that is from a lack of algorithms. We know how the robot is supposed to get over the random terrain, we just can't make it think fast enough to have a desiarable reaction time.

HP is dumping the Alpha for one reason. They don't welcome our new robot overlords. I AM THE PHB-9000
