And here I am, reading this article on my Dad's new computer, running guess which distribution of guess which operating system.
He's one of two relatively computer-ignorant older people I installed Ubuntu for in the last month or so and I've received no more follow-up questions than I'd expect to if I'd installed Windows.
The author's complaint is apparently that people like those I installed Ubuntu for aren't yet spontaneously asking for it at Fry's Electronics, but that's hardly something executives, analysts and "crusty old reporters" were predicting.
Dr. Cheikh Modibo Diarra, who alludes that open source continually costs you money by saying 'You buy Microsoft software, and you buy it once and for all, the cost that we tell you is the total cost for ownership.'
Look, I'm no Linux fanboy*. But Ubuntu is not only free-as-in-beer, not only more stable, not only more powerful but there's a whole community who's idea of recreation is waiting for people like my 50-something friend I installed the distribution for to help with any problems he might have.
Like... Holy Christ, they charge you for new versions of their OS, in complete and outright, obvious contradiction of the quote above. In what way is there even a competition there?
*Disclaimer: I am. But you should take me seriously anyway.
Hopefully in the suit, this forces 3DRealms hand to over the Duke Nukem Forever IP rights, so Take2 can finalize the the product and release the game in hope to recoup the funds lost in the investment.
Yeah, that's what we need, DNF to finally be released as some slapped together pile of tech demos by Take Two code monkeys. The only hope of a worthwhile release that I can see, and it's a very long shot, is that what currently exists of the game is released to Duke Nukem fans, who hopefully make up for in love and enthusiasm what they lack in expertise, to make something out of.
Thank you for making those points way better than I was prepared to. It's always amazing watching Slashdotters try to share what they know about women.
The DSM-IV was published in 1994, well before MMOs and online gaming became big, and treating game addiction is a big new thing in psychology these days. But anyway, my point wasn't to call WoW addiction "real" (or not), just that saying "most people don't play WoW 20 hours a day" is missing the original point about whether WoW can be called a "casual" game.
Most people who take heroin never get addicted, and those who do would probably get hooked on something else if heroin wasn't around. That doesn't make heroin a "light" drug.
We, as a consumer group, do have the power to stop RIAA and MPAA cold. How? Stop listening to music on the radio, don't buy any new CDs (used is fine), turn off your TV (and cable/sat/uverse), and don't go to the movies.
But how are we ever going to get the latest songs and movies without paying for them???
Personally, I enter my most mentally productive state when I start to become sleep-deprived. If and when my second wind kicks in, I tend to be much more focused and productive with an intellectual task. It's as though lacking sleep forces my brain to slow down enough to concentrate, like most of the guests at the party have gone and there are only a few voices left, so you can actually follow what all's going on in the room.
Where does the brain come in? Are you saying that you, as an intelligent, rational human being, doubt that it matters if you know those involved in the case? And that it's worth people's time on their job to discuss it?
Being a psychology student^W^W^W myself, I find that very interesting. Have you tried using nature recordings? Would "ambient" music like the kind Brian Eno makes work, or does the fact that it incorporates a lot of silence ruin it? How about droney, monotonous Indian music?
I find it interesting that I browse a site that casually has a story like this: "They propose that a quantum particle is capable of changing into a pair of 'virtual particles' capable of passing through a potential barrier before changing back" sandwiched between two stories about video games, as though they both belong in the same broad category (of "nerdy" or something).
Why should anyone who could find out how to do that not just download and install the Pricey Premium edition (or any other edition) of Windows 7? Wouldn't one's time be better spent helping people do that? (I mean, unless you consider one more immoral than the other)
Isn't it a bit of a leap to use the word 'terrorism' as shorthand for "missiles, or nuclear, chemical or biological weapons"? Missiles aren't even necessarily weapons.
When did "weapons development by those the United States doesn't like" become the definition of terrorism?
'Traditionally, in some countries, the jokes only last until noon: like UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa, someone who plays a trick after noon is called an "April Fool".[1] Elsewhere, such as in Ireland, France, and the USA, the jokes last all day.'
Why? Because if all humans are off the menu, that means you are too.
Just what is a block letter? (Wikipedia wasn't helpful)

If they're hot and never take their pants off, what's the problem?
74 minutes after Adblock Plus-Minus was released, a Greasemonkey script was released to remove the new tag from all websites visited.
People who land on the site read a page, then find an interesting ad to click off on.
I don't know about you, I've never once seriously considered clicking on an ad.
Just be happy they don't breath fire.
How is stealing from Ikea "fleecing the proles"?
Sure, sure, they each use different issues to trap you into voting against the other guy
Actually, *that*'s the only difference. For the most part, their money comes from the same places too.

At least the travel menu in the originals you would encounter enemies.
If by that you mean random encounters while fast-traveling, there's a mod for that.

Find me a culture in which a person doesn't look cool smoking.
I've never heard that in my life. But the One True Source of All Knowledge enlightens us:
'Traditionally, in some countries, the jokes only last until noon: like UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa, someone who plays a trick after noon is called an "April Fool".[1] Elsewhere, such as in Ireland, France, and the USA, the jokes last all day.'
1) You can't buy something that's not for sale.
2) They can just set up another torrent site.
