From an interview with one of the plaintiffs:

    - You seek 10,000 yen per plaintiff. What is the basis of this amount?

I believe that we should not demand too much compensation because it is not as if we were harmed in any way. Our purpose is not financial, but rather to scrutinize the distributor's attitude as a corporation towards its clients. I think that this would not have become such a problem if Buena Vista had admitted its mistake when people complained in the first place; there would never have been any lawsuit if they had. I think that it is Buena Vista's attidude and response to the issue that are the problem

    A fair question.

    1) I'm a cash-starved student. I currently have one system. I may invest in breaking this apart into two systems, but eating and graduating come first.

    2) Most of my work is done for non-profit educational organizations. I find the work much more fulfilling, and it will benefit me long term with much better inroads for my chosen major (education). But they can be tightwads when outsourcing their work. So, some of my payment sometimes comes in barter. ie, they have an annual conference and their hotel deal gives them gratis rooms, so they fly me to Long Beach and give me a cheap 10 day vacation.

I find my 10 minutes of tech support is useful for cashing in free labor. The last time I purchased a major applicance, I called a person for whom I installed DSL and had free help for the installation in less than five minutes. When I needed to transport something by truck, I flagged the uncle whose system I upgraded. Another time, when my system crashed shortly before a major (freelance) project was due, I moved in with the tech-challenged neighbors for a few days, designing / scripting on their system from evening to late morning and sleeping during the rest of the day.

Bottom line, don't lament your inevitable consultation requests. Help them as best you can, and then cash in the karma for appropriate favors from them. I think you'll find it comes in handy.

I am at Uni, but I am an education major, double certifying for Business and CS.

As further illustration: the Business side requires courses involving all of the big 4 components of Office. After all, it follows that one should know what one is expected to teach. I'm in the final course of that series (Access / PP), and I'm seeing people unable to properly navigate the interface.

These aren't stupid people -- these include people preparing to graduate in the highest-ranked education program in the state -- but they never learned how to understand user interfaces in general, or even the commonalities in Office's interfaces. They haven't learned that "*" is a wildcard in many environments, and for many of them, the very concept of applying a wildcard as part of a search term is bewildering.

Of course, the school mandates a Computer Studies 101 course, but it underprepares them. Little 10-question, open-book, multiple choice quizzes, along with simple homework assignments all lead to a short-term burst of knowledge without ever scratching the Comprehension level (see, Dr. Faulk -- I really am learning) So, they forget this stuff, just like you might forget stuff in a random elective, only these are things that they are supposed to need again and again.

Sorry for the venting. It just vexes me so.

These are things many of us can figure out easily. But I, for one, don't "know" how to do any of those things.

Don't blame the students, folks. Blame the curricula that place more emphsasis on rote of application specifics instead of transferable concepts.

I hate it when I do stupid stuff like pick the wrong format. Once more with appropriate breaking:

Blackmail implies a negative outcome for the company. Or, at least, an outcome more negative than had I no dealings with the product. They gain money by providing me with product, and they lose no money (save what they had to gain) by not. That is not blackmail.

The part about acquiring it illegally is a given about much of the public in many ways of life. 30 seconds on packetnews, go to the appropriate IRC channel, and get the newest Screener or DVDRip. Been that way for awhile. You might bemoan that, but it's still the case.

Here they're trying to fulfill a market that doesn't exist (24 hour online rentals) and so of course it's going to fail. The only people interested in online rentals are agorophobians and people who live in desolate areas. So that leaves Johnny Carson, and who else?

Porn is the only industry that gets off (pun intended) on that business structure, and this venture won't change that.

Side notes: In my meager defense, I've downloaded a move exactly once, then realized why screeners really suck. I will likely do it for Spirited Away though, because of Disney's cock-up in distributing it to all of 200 screens in total, with the nearest being three+ hours away. I may do it for Bowling for Columbine too, because of the Regal Cinemas flap, unless Michael Moore wants to sell me a DVD personally, so I'll know he's getting my cash and not a distributor.
