  2. NO, Please GOD, NO! on Farscape Frelling Cancelled · · Score: 0

    There are very few science fiction series that I like, with Farscape being one that I HATE. I like the Star Trek series (Original-so so, TNG-soso, DS9-so so, Voyager-love it, and Enterprise love it a lot) and I LOVE the whole Stargate epic (movie and series). I'm really picky when it comes to my sci-fi and now that I'm totally in love they are going to rip it from my arms?

    The last time I felt like this was with ROBOTECH. Remeber the whole series, I was so in love I bought the whole book set and read each and every one of them. I still have the books.

    Why GOD, why? We had a deal. Please keep Richard Dean Anderson, we love is humor.

    I see a lot on what case to use to minimize the eye carnage when you web a PC and your living room, and also I've read on what OSes to use. But what I have not seen is a comiplation of software to use.

    I want to be able to:
    * Have TIVO functionality
    * Play my MP3s
    * RIP CDs
    * Download multimedia files via broadband inernet
    * Manage my downloaded and existing media
    * Be able to copy a CD without having to use my PC
    * Play DVDs
    * Listen to the radio
    * Record radio shows (I like talk radio and Art Bell)
    * Be able to transfer files to and from my PC
    * And most of all, BE SO EASY TO USE MY PC-ILLITERATE WIFE CAN USE IT!

    I think I have the remote control problem licked. I have a Philips Pronto T-1000. Probably the best remote control you can have, but I know newer versions with RF exist. Mine is IR only, but that is fine, I want my HEPC for one room, for now.

    I can build the PC, I know how to install Linux perfectly, but want software will let me do all of the above and probably more in one cohesive GUI that can be controlled with a remote control. Keep in mind, again, that I can do A LOT with my Pronto remote control including creating macros.

    Yeah! Top Gun is good for a jet fighting movie, but a real live action movie with transforming mecha and battle pods is cool!!! With today's special effects it could easily be done.

    Just imagine a live action scene where Rick Hunter is in his VF1 trying to catch Minmei as she free falls. Rick has to manuver the arm while he is in Guardian mode to catch her and keep a hold on her. Then we all know that he can't and ends up, if memory serves me right, opening the cockpit and getting her in. All this while free falling.

    That would make a kick-ass scene!!!!

    Finally, someone has spoken up. I say AMEN! HALLELUIAH! AMEN BROTHER! RIGHT ON, RIGHT ON!

    I consider myself a hardcore web coder because I learned using NOTEPAD, remember that as your editor? I still code these days using ColdFusion Studio. I don't use a bullshit WYSIWYG Frontpage/Dreamweaver editor (btw, Dreamweaver MX in code editor mode kicks ass).

    I have developed application sites that HAD to work of multiple browsers and versions. It was a nightmare. These nightmares using happened around Netscape. For years I was a Netscape worshipper and a IE basher. Then I saw the light, and it BURNED! I was pulling my hair, kicking chairs, and cursing like, well, being Mormon and never cursing I think I had a good reason because of Netscape. If you want to get me mad make me code for Netscape.

    We had to make things work for both browsers or just don't use it. Sometimes we had a great idea and it worked perfectly in IE, but NS didn't support it. Today I have turned myself around. I bash NS and praise IE. Netscape users can go F*CK themselves dry with a brillo brush.

    I am finally happy to be at a company that standardize on IE 5.5, which 6.x will be on the corporate horizon soon. Things work fine, great features. Anger level is lowering.

  10. Don't forget Axion and Directron in Houston on Home-Built vs. Store-Bought PCs · · Score: 0

    I know everybody is praising NewEgg, in fact I just ordered the Soyo SY-KT333 Ultra motherboard, which is FANTASTIC. But, do not forget the other great online vendors. Being from Houston, Texas I also have the luck of two local online vendors: Axion and Directron. Axion as some absolutely great prices, in fact I'm going this weekend for more parts, and Directron has some great deals also, though sometimes not as good as NewEgg.

    I would always prefer to buy locally in case of any problems and for instant gratification. The local Fry's takes months to get in line with the rest of the PC market.

    So in summary, you cannot go wrong with NewEgg in terms of price and customer service. You might pay a few bucks more than the lowest of the lowest prices, but it is worth it. Customer service is great! Do not forget other great vendors such as Axion with great prices for many many things and Directron for their inventory and prices also.

I believe that Linux is great as a server OS for web, news, file sharing, and more, but not ready as a desktop. I consider myself a power user and have spent the almost the a whole month trying to convince myself that I should switch to Linux as my primary desktop, even went to far as to install VMWare for those M$ and banking software I need for windoze.

    BTW, my favorite wm is Enlightenment (ROCKS!) though KDE is very usable, but not quite there yet. As a desktop user I need a good DVD player, and a better file manager, even though I think Konquerer is on the right path.

    Don't think I'm anti-Linux, I have Mandrake on my laptop and on my PC so I can experiment and still do some personal testing and convincing, but W2K still is my primary boot option in LILO.
