Supposing grandma doesnt have a techie grandson always running to fix stuff when she calls, heaven forbid you are out of town and she wants to install something.. then what ?
In my opinion 90% of the spyware issues will go away when people learn how to use the tool ( computer) that they have spent $$$ on. I am not saying MS isnt partly guilty when it comes to bad security but the users have to take part of the blame as well for not wanting to learn how to use their computers.
Remember the cheaper DRM controlled hardware MS and SUN talked about many months back? Thats what they mean by cheaper hardware.
They want to control the hardware and force people to whatever license terms they see fit. The only cheaper hardware they like is the one which allows them total control to and through their software.
Lets just say your true blue 3D copying machine becomes a reality.
If you can copy a car, you can copy many other things. Like food, medicines, whatever you need. Once you can just create products with a flip of a switch, there would be no need for money. Hence no need for profits. Hence no automobile industry. And best of all, noone would complain.
Everytime there is an article similar to this one, someone like you always claims that users dont want to know and dont need to know.
Let us just go into your car analogy which is incorrect. In your analogy there is a 3rd party involved who deliberately gives you false information. A more correct analogy is, before you purchased your car, you learnt to drive. Maybe you learnt how do drive the car by yourself or you had someone teach you. The point is you spent some time learning how to use your car.. a tool to get you from point A to point B. Or maybe you are very rich and you have a chauffer who drives you around.
The computer is a tool. Your WiFi router is a tool. If you plan to set it up yourself, then you should read the manual. If you dont have the time, pay someone to do it for you. Either way your router is setup. Do most people change the oil in their cars ? No, they pay people to do it for them. $30 - $60 depending on the car and type of oil it uses. So pay a tech to setup your router for $50 and voila... your router is setup. Pay someone a similar monthly service fee to make sure your computer is patched and virus free. There ARE people in most localities who do this.
I am by no means a novice user. Yet, I still read the manual. Everytime i purchase hardware or software I read the manual. I keep the manual with me for as long as I own the product. In case something goes wrong, I can get information from the manual , about the problem or how to fix it, or a telephone number or an email address of someone who can fix it for me.
Well I had an issue like 10 years ago. This was when cell phones werent quite as common as they are now and I had rented a cell phone for a week so I could keep in touch with my parents.
I returned the phone and thought that was the end of that. But in addition to the $100 or so i racked up in that week ( which was the amount invoiced ), the rental company had charged me $1500 more. Called Amex and it was taken care of. Got the money refunded and the charges never appeared again.
Actually joining the Mandrake Club would mean that you are showing your appreciation for their software and your willingness to support a project which clearly is beneficial to you.
You know you *dont* have to pay for Mandrake Club and download the free isos which are exactly what they offer in their premium versions ( minus the commercial packages of course )
But calling the Mandrake Club a monthly license is just untrue. If you use an open source product and want to contribute, monetary donations can also help a lot.
From a government site ? The California Board of Accountancy. Nice
He should sue the State of California for making this information public. Next we will see felons who have been released from prison suing the government who have their criminal actions on their permanent record.
Usually in cases like that, the company almost always gives you a pager or a phone. The past 4 companies I have worked with gave me a pager or a phone and the one company which did not give me a phone/pager paid the monthly fee for my personal cell phone.
Darl actually suggested that if Drug companies come up with a new formula for a drug on a linux machine they would have to license the formula under the GPL.
This guy clearly wins the "No Clue" award when it comes to licenses. Now at least we know that he most likely has misintepreted the Unix contracts
AFAIK their cash registers connect to the single server in each store running SCO Unix which runs a Win3.x app runnong on Merge. Yes, a 16bit Windows App.
Hmm lemme see.. when i was last in India ( 1996 ) I visited Pizza Hut and KFC. Most major cities have burger places and possibly pizza places as well. Not that i consider Pizza Hut to be 'good' pizza.
The only thing i would assume which would be hard to find in India would be GOOD Italian food. Then again outside of NY Tristate Area its hard to find good italian food and pizza in the US as well. Pizza hut, Domino', Little Cesars whatever suck. Hell most pizza available in California sucks. There are quite a few decent places tho.. most notably Speederia Pizzeria in San Carlos:)

I dont think i have ever heard a "MOD PARENT UP" put so poetically.

No information about the Linux version on Cyberlink's page.
I will happily buy PowerDVD for Linux if I could, i do not want to install another distribution to use PowerDVD however.
Define (a) use harder
Fair Use is about as constitutional as the right to copyright. The two should go hand in hand.
(a) I dont have this problem
(b) If this is reproducible, Have you posted this to their bugzilla ?

At this rate, you will probably have to pay license fees to even hum a tune.
The reader told Macworld: 'I downloaded the file in the hope that perhaps Microsoft had released some sort of public beta.
.. The idiot tried to get warez. If you try and download warez off a p2p network and get screwed in the process, you deserve it.
.. if it was a public beta, wouldnt it be on the MICROSOFT site?

AFAIK their software engineering department has now been converted into Litigation Engineering department.
.. just not the usual sort.
So yes, they still have engineers

When falling, sue the ground for being hard and the air for being soft
I heard the RIAA hired David Boies to represent them in this matter.

Wow where in India are you calling ?
Most of the Indian programmers I have ever had to speak with, have always spoken English very well.
The issue might have been your accent. Try speaking without eating a jelly filled donut next time.

With the amendment, the suit also includes new allegations that IBM violated its SCO contract by improperly exporting Unix software to India
And this from SCO's site:

Hmm you make it seem that the avg Indian who works in the IT field lives in squalor.
:)
:) ) in the US as well.
Actually middle class Indians have all the amenities as we do in the US. Good house, car, broadband, cable, supermarkets wtf ever.
Hell if you live in Bombay you can have comparable rents (US $ value )
I do agree however that there are a lot of poor in India and I have seen quite a lot of broke ass white people ( (c) Chris Rock
