This of course assumes that all of the IIS machines do not yet have the patch to fix the vulnerability. Its MS's fault that there is a problem in the first place but the people running these servers should have applied the patch by now (maybe they should bill the time to MS). All of this is hype.
Wow, this sounds like the DMCA. You define what you what something to mean and then if anybody disagrees you take your toys away from them even if the legal definition is different.
The article header states Publishers want a pay-for-use library system so that you won't go there to escape high prices elsewhere.
This is nowhere in the article. If a library has an e-book, what do the publishers think is okay for the library to do with it? I think a one person at a time per license agreement seems reasonable, provided the license is a one time cost, good forever, and transferable to another body.
Generally tests that involve the quality of sound related items - speakers, microphones, etc don't need to focus on bitrate or such, they just get people to listen and make a judgement. When they have wine tastings, nobody computes the sugar content of the wine, they taste it. MP3s are poor compared to other formats, thats been known for a long time.
Mod the parent up please. This is an interesting question. It is very hard for a person to state that this ruling is correct and at the same time argue that musicians or other content providers should not have the choice of deciding if their work appears for free on Napster. So what's Slashdot's stance? Strong intellectual property rights, or users choice?
The records companies claimed that the reason for the price floors they imposed through the advertising rebate scheme was to prevent larger stores such as Walmart from selling CDs at a loss to attract customers into the store. This would kill off the smaller stores and lead to the larger stores becoming the sole source of music. Sounds like Microsoft.
If the claim is true, I support the price floors, Walmart being the sole source of music is scary.
I think its because the number of people interested in the differences between Word 6 and Wordperfect 6 and WordPro 6 was much bigger than those that wanted actual technical details on things such as chip design or how to create a circuit. After the web became popular Byte got killed him they tried to because a business magazine. I think Jerry Pournelle talked about this.

In undergrad 1st year chem I noticed that my exam marks did not match the what I should have received given the answers posted. One question had the correct answer listed in the answer sheet but the computer used to scan the exam sheets had the wrong data for the question. That was 2% off everyone's exam mark until it was caught.
Read the book Crypto, it discussed how the FBI and NSA realized that no foreign government would allow the importation of strong crypto unless they too had the government decryption keys. It also discusses how they
gave up when they realized nobody in the US would use it.
Considering that it takes 3 to 6 months, a team of thousands and millions of dollars to get a space shuttle ready to fly again I say the Chrysler car is looking quite good.
I suggest you should pick a better counter example. The people who wrote the Slash code decided to release it for free. If you make a movie you should have the choice to release it for free or not.
Most movies are totally commerical enterprises with the studio owning and paying for everything. You cannot claim that you're copying the movie to promote the artist - like in music. They want you to pay for the movie, so they get paid.
If they stayed out of US airspace - nothing. This occurred with Russia during the Cold War and still occurs when the Russians can get their planes up in the air.
The article states that Microsoft is just producing the OS and bundled software. They are building some hardware units but they are just prototypes for hardware companies such as Compaq to follow. Same idea as the PocketPC. If its a flop at worst they are out the cost of porting Windows. If successfully, they can try to sell each TabletPC user TabletExcel, TabletWord, TabletOutlook, TabletXXX......

Most likely this stores are carrying information and displays about the XBox because Microsoft is paying them to. If Nintendo does not like that, its time to pony up some money. A computer store like EB is not in the business of making Nintendo happy, its to make money. If they can make more money they stocking Microsoft XBox displays and selling XBox in the fall then selling Nintendo games now then thats what they should do.
From what I read it simply allows a parent or whomever has the key (a password I presume) to set limits to what the machine can play based on encoding in the games. Its good for developers because companies that develop games for adults can rate them Adult Only and if anyone complains about their contents they can say parents can use the built in V-CHIP.
On the other hand banning all games except for those that get a G or PG rating is plain wrong.
Living in a world where the ARM controls all technology, censors history and operates in secert is not my idea of utopia.
Without the misfits who studied banned history texts and read about war the Earth would have fallen to the Kiniz (sp?). Most likely they played video games also.
Personally I hope that DSS not only uses their own hackers to stop the people stealing their signal but lawsuits, and criminal legal action. It's simple, if you want to use something as noncrucial as satellite tv, pay for it. Those movies don't shoot themselves nor does the sports signals appear without alot of teams and players expecting to get paid.
Okay, how many "I'm going to kill somebody" statements does it take to get concerned. Also the student did not tell the police, they told the school.
What's the real problem anyhow, and how can you tell what it is without people talking to the student that made the initial statement? And to do that, the statement must be reported.

If this was an American ice man maybe he was reaching for his wallet.

In 1982 maybe, MS makes about a billion dollars a month and I doubt they see Mainframes as anything more then replacement targets.

The Third Voice software also inserted content into other people's sites. And unless these tags there was no easy way to stop it.

Tell that to Oriole fans. They had a huge payroll and sucked. Same with Washington in the NFL.

Try snail mail instead. E-mail is nearly always completely ignored.

Actually NASA made it so that there was a 1 in a million chance of success. As everyone on the Disc knows 1 in a million chances always succeed!
