Pretty much all you need to know to understand why CD sales dropped for a few years, then rose again in 2004.

  2. Price on PSP North American Launch Date · · Score: 4, Insightful

Sony will likely take a big loss on the device in order to challenge Nintendo, just like Microsoft did with the XBOX to challenge Sony. The difference between the two is that the XBOX could be used with standard non-proprietary media and converted to a stand-alone media center ... bringing no more revenue to Microsoft. The PSP, as I understand it, requires that users either use Sony's new disc format or Sony's memory stick. They're almost guaranteed to derive at least some profit from the sale of games or memory for the device. Seems to me that Sony can afford to take a huge hit in device price to encourage more users to buy.

Barry Bonds struck a deal with Topps baseball cards where they're the only company that can print a card with him on it. He wasn't in any company's cards this year, though Topps can now post-print a 2004 under the terms of the "deal". The price for Barry? Estimates say 1-2 million.

Not that I consider it a big deal ... but this now also changes the concept that what you type is only sent across the net once you hit enter. Each key you press now sends info across the net. For an application like this, it's not a big deal ... but I can imagine situations where this could be exploited.

While we're on the topic of typing being sent real-time versus being sent upon carriage-return, can somebody please explain how in one of the last scenes of "Sum of All Fears" all of the communication back and forth with the US and Russia is sent after the carriage-return, EXCEPT for the one where Jack Ryan gets cut off halfway through a sentence? Pissed me off.

  10. Timing on Firefox New York Times Ad, Soon · · Score: 5, Interesting

I'm curious about the timing of the ad. The last two weeks of the year are when most corporate executives take vacations ... meaning they may not keep up with news in the Times ... meaning if the goal is to convince these guys to use Firefox in their corporations, they may miss the target market entirely. I suppose you could make the case that these same guys now have more time to sit on a beach and read the Times, but has any thought been put into the timing of this thing?
