Then your Java coders suck. In the MS-dominated shop I work in, my Java app is the only thing which doesn't require at least a bi-monthly head scratching session that culminates in a reboot, since none of the MCSE's can actually FIX anything beyond applying yet another patch or checking settings. Meanwhile, the Java proggie takes in another few thousand apps from our clients... The only time it goes down is when Windows craps its own memory and throws an exception outside the VM. And yes I'd rather run it on a Linux box, but no! That wouldn't be a Microsoft solution that our 'expert' MCSE's can maintain! Jesus wept.
"Their software stinks, but Gates is a ruthless business man, which I do admire to a certain extent."
This just confuses me. Many, many people hold the opinion that ruthlessness in business is somehow to be tacitly approved of and (not-so)secretly admired. Yet when I think of world leaders who fall into the ruthless bucket, I think of such luminaries as, not just the love-to-hate-him Hitler, but other nice fellas like Idi Amin(sp?), Pol Pot and Papa Doc Duvalier (sp again?:). Sure, MS hasn't committed mass murder (of people anyway, just companies), but in the business sense MS/Gates are about as pathological as they come. That is not something to be admired, but pitied.
"The one thing about commercial software is that at some point one person or group decides exactly which features will be in the next version and which ones won't."
This is true of many OSS projects as well, just not Mozilla apparently.
Oh my we're off topic. But your point of "if you remove Christ, what is left?", from a philosophical point of view and not etymological, is very interesting to me and my main problem with Christianity. GOD is what is left if you stop concentrating so much on Jesus and/or the Bible. Getting caught up too much in forms and words is bad for trying to grasp true understanding. Didn't God himself at one point say, "Thou shalt have no other gods before Me." Christianity borders REAL close on idol worship or a cult of personality if you ask me. How is saying that Jesus is just a facet of God, and so it is ok to worship him any different than saying the same of Ra or Odin, for instance? You could say that he was sanctioned by God as the New Testament says, but don't get me started on God's sudden change of personality between the Old and New Testaments. Trying to explain it as, oh, God was sorry for being such a hardass before, and to show He's really such a nice fellow He decided to send down a part of Himself in the form of a man to be killed to wipe the sin slate clean for all of us. And He promises to be nice from now on, or until the 'end times' at least, when He'll let Satan take over the world and everyone who isn't in Christ's Army will be permanently destroyed. Forgetting for a moment, of course, that the entire Universe does not consist solely of this planet. Ummm, yeah, right, whatever. After noticing that big shift, I take nothing the Bible says at face value, even if it's in quotes as being said by God or Jesus himself. Jesus, you, me, our bodies, minds and thoughts, are all facets of God, as the entire Universe is his body. God is the one, true reality.
I see your point, though BGI & II have helped lately as someone mentioned, but technically you're off topic. Pretty much the entire point of NWN is to create and or participate in user created worlds that will be differentiated mainly by the stories they present. After all, they will all be working with same basic building blocks as far as graphics, sounds, etc. (Last I read anyway) Most will surely suck, some will be beautiful but shallow, and a very few will attract the core players that will make them really shine. Hopefully!:)
A website I created recently used PNG for about three days until clients started complaining that the graphics wouldn't display. Being a corporate site, telling them to get a newer browser wouldn't work. They'd sooner go to our competitors pages.
"how about a tandy 102? It has almost the same processing power...300 baud internal modem and 24k of memory..."
1040 had a megabyte of RAM. Especially if the Atari's processor outclasses the Tandy's by a similar degree, I would hardly call that 'almost the same'.
Oh right. Forgetting for a moment that this is an AMERICAN website and that the author of the article was likely implying billions after _conversion_, the article should have read:
"many countries have poured billions of drachmas, kopeks, dong, won, yen, pesetas, rubles, rupees, lira, marks, pounds, franks, krones, shillings, pesos, punts, baht, yuan, taka and polished beads into it's development..."
"Impact of vulnerability: Run code of attacker's choice.
Maximum Severity Rating: Critical
Anyone with even half a brain should realize...that product may not be the best built out there."
Sounds logical to us, but Joe Average automatically thinks that "MS stuff might suck, but they are the (biggest|best|marketleader) so everyone else must be even worse." Regardless of the actual truth of the variable above, perceptions are everything. And MS is so very, very good at creating perceptions.
And how exactly do any of your subdivisions not fall under the broader category of 'bad admin'? Whether directly of the systems or additionally of the people whose job it is? And you got a two for that comment? LOL
"Balaran's consultant used a normal Internet connection and free software to access the system. Once inside, he found no firewalls, numerous missing passwords and no system to detect intruders. He had unfettered access to the Indians' accounts and once even set up a fake account in Balaran's name."
It doesn't sound like it had anything to do with what software they were running, database or otherwise. Bad admin, pure and simple.
My bill is about the same as yours. Cable modem went out recently and I called for details on dialup backup service, which used to be provided. I was advised to sign up for AT&T dialup service for only $19.99 per month. Fsck them.
While humorous, this one left me feeling icy inside. How is this not a very possible future? How many years closer would it get with even _one_ more major terrorist act? Surely it could be argued, based on the logic used in Washington lately, that those are in fact two large categories under which many potential terrorists could be grouped and so should be added as 'top-level' groups to do some light (great word to add for making it sound innocuous eh?) surveillance of. Surely they would not inform you of it though if you were selected...
While worded poorly, I think they were pointing out that the poster was completely ignoring any fair use aspects of those programs was inferring that the only use for them is illegal/immoral. You have to ask yourself why.
Called a different store and asked if what I the price I saw on the web is the same as the one in the store and if they had them in stock. Got a 'Yes' and 'Yes'. Am printing the web page and giving it another shot. I _really_ dont want to be in the shopping madness on Friday...
As someone pointed out, less than eloquently, if you are noticing no IDE lag on your box, then you're likely not doing an multi-tasking. Or at least none that is in any way disk intensive. So the problem is invisible to you, but far from 'only a problem on Pentium and 486 processors'. That is bunk.
I know it's bad form to a) follow up your own post and b) post before reading the linked stories, but hey. Sue me!
So, seeing as it is a Taiwanese company developing this, it is even more obvious why they chose Chinese:) and yet would also seem to confirm that maybe Cantonese isn't as easy to deal with as Mandarin since, AFAIK, Taiwan is predominately Cantonese speaking. Unless they are trying to go for a mainland audience with the chip. Any Chinese speakers here that can help out with this?

Considering the number of shills about right now, I'm headed to oblivion for this, but after reading a couple of your comments I feel compelled-
" You're saying that Microsoft's technologies don't work very well for things they weren't designed for? Gee, no kidding."
No, I think he was saying Microsoft technologies don't work very well, period.
