osx is $129 and regular updates are free (including 10.1). i have just read some comments about a substantial number of casual linux users switching to osx. does this match anybody's experience? btw, i do use osx but need to work in 9.2 most often, and i surf on a windows 2000 machine.
and, at several thousand a year on cds, i wish i would make a dent, but probably not. well, most of my stuff is obscure/indie anyway. i guess i'll run out and get the basics! i do have a feeling that the labels will not be coming out of this situation in the same form. at some point it will become easier to deal with the musicians than with the labels. "dowload the latest firmware to your cd"... yah right! the second hand market will thrive!
an author key could prevent unauthorized modification. with a cross linking xml-ish markup, a correction could be proposed, and the author could note or search for correction markups and make the change. do you really want to download everything? gotta luv the point at which we seem to be stuck technologically. people don't want to pay for anything, and nobody wants to just give stuff away...
all you have to do is stop by an authorized dealer and sign on the dotted line. but, i was kind of confused by the installer, because it was acting as if it could perform a new install. check the dialog boxes as you proceed. the install was clean any way, but i do prefer a complete, clean install to an update--m$. the win 2000 from nt 4 upgrade was a nightmare.
it's not pointless... actually what this product should be is a tablet with some sort of easel on the back. add wireless, a touchpad, a happy hacker keyboard, and voila: an open source laptop. rarely is my laptop actually on my lap. 8 pounds of heated plastic. all i need now is vinyl couch covers. a company called dave design (i believe) makes some truly beautiful cases. throw in the new nvidia chip, a 833 transmeta or an arm (yummy!)... coop computers. very cool. i can get the product designers and product development engineers.
why does transmeta have to enter every market? they could easily license the technology to amd and remain a small profitable company. is the future really about wintel everywhere? look at arm who has a rather nice set of tech. large and unprofitable is really no fun!
...or, can you actually get commodity hardware to perform like sgi hardware? optimized hardware could be a very profitable business, as apple could create a great consumer analogue to the opensource industry. why sgi can't capitalize on this stuff is beyond me. thanks god i sold that stock long ago.
the only reason i stopped using it was the fact that apple was discontinuing the product line. way ahead of the curve, but an osx base could be very cool. accessing pine via a wireless connection will be quite cool.
i have been looking for something like this so that i can use my older Cobalt NasRaq with 60gigs of raid for a home m3 server. it connects via the network and i can back up the music to dlt. very cool, but this is not a regular mp3 player. i use a laptop not a desktop, and don't want a pc in my living room. it would be very cool if this functioned like a server so that an mp3 player on my laptop could access the music over the web. hey, while were at it, i would like it to have an internet radio station on apache... yum!
i can see apple's concern for canibalizing their market, but by creating say a basic interface with functionality limited to quartz and essential i/o, they could create a mindshare market. windows is the current leader, but everybody would love to ditch the costs and security issues.
i really don't carry much cash. it's a running joke amongst friends. but, i don't have a visa but i use amex regularly. what is particularly anoying is all of the cards. i want one card--or ring as the case may be--to bind all of my cards together. they are accounts, not cards. when this begins to happen the cash-less society will begin. it is all symbolic and arbitrary anyway... as if we can pretend to live in a society and not be identified! get over it.
the way osx deals with comonent archtecture is tyo reuse components for features. when somebody writes a spell checker, that same spell checker, or the spell checker of preference, can be called by other programs. why rewrite everything? Open Source can really shine in environements like this.
great, just what we need another "sheriff" to run around thinking with "his" penis. strike at who? and, how? an intelligent attack needs to be responded to in an intelligent and powerful way,, or terrorism wins.
god i loved my newton! and this thing will supposedly run a version of osx. a real terminal on a hand-held.
and a great monitor. nothing kills productivity like tired eyes and a sore behind.

unlike the other protected versions. quick, everyone go out and buy a couple, then return them!

i had thought that the service pack would upgrade my browser. nope.

perhaps it is time for an open source virus detection program with options for non standard updates...
...that i am having a bad case of carnivore today!

i had an erector set in the early seventies! im i that old?
is a trademarked color.
get over it!

it's called an intellipoint explorer... you can take off the training wheels whenever you wish, or never.
