  1. I thought Paris Hilton was hosting on Paris Hosts the Second Hacker Space Festival · · Score: 1

When I first read the headline, I thought Paris Hilton would be hosting the event! Perhaps she's just been a hacker in disguise all of this time!

    Oh well.

  2. 30% less more like it! on Space History Footage In HD · · Score: 2, Interesting

It's actually going to probably be 30% less! In order to go wide screen, the footage will probably be letterboxed, as the footage was probably shot in 4:3.. so they will have to cut out to top and bottom parts to give us the widescreen format!

    Right?

  5. Windows Media all over again on Miguel Plans Silverlight on Mono & Linux by Years End · · Score: 4, Insightful

All Mac users were UNABLE to watch any videos on MSNBC AT ALL for YEARS.. because Microsoft required you to "Upgrade to Internet Explorer ON WINDOWS ONLY". Even though other sites were able to show Windows Media files on Macs.. MSNBC DISABLED the ability for macs to try to get us to switch.

Lately you can watch snippets of videos on MSNBC because they are "beta testing" FLASH to show their videos ONLY because of the success of YouTube. You still cannot watch live events on macs though.

The point of all this is that Microsoft is not making Silverlight because they care about the community. They are making it so that they can stranglehold all of the non windows users at some point down the road Once we all get sucked in and a bunch of sites are made using Slverlight.. Microsoft will then come out with a new feature that will ONLY work on Windows.. and then we will all be sorry again.

I am a web developer who has to make 4 different versions of each site because of all the "bugs" in IE.

I would be an idiot to build a site using Silverlight.. because we all know exactly what's going to happen with that format down the road.

The famous hacker Kevin Poulsen in the book "The Twisted Life and Crimes of Serial Hacker Kevin Poulsen" discovered computers in secret rooms in AT&T that could tap any phone in America.. and this was in the early 90's. Actually the 8700 is the best PDA/Phone I have ever used. Blackberry does email phenomenally well. And the phone on the 8700 is finally a very good phone with great sound quality.

Because of the large user base, Blackberry has learned how to make the Blackberry VERY intuitive... try doing something intuitive on a Windows mobile unit and you'll see what I am talking about. It will be at least a year before Microsoft catches up to Blackberry as far as ease of use.

  18. That's why EXIT POLLS are so accurate except when. on Maryland Votes To Ban Diebold Voting Machines · · Score: 2, Interesting

Exit polls have always been VERY accurate in predicting the vote outcome, as there is no reason for people to lie about who they just voted for.. but *for some reason* in Ohio this last Pres. election the exit polls were way off.. and that state was fully electronic, using machines by Diebold where the President of the company said he would "deliver Ohio" to President Bush.. and there was no paper trail.

I'm not saying there is a conspiracy here, but in a situation like that where the exit polls were very different from the outcome, you could order a recount of the paper ballots. It's VERY hard to tamper with millions of paper ballots.

  19. For Sports Fans who travel a Must! on LocationFree Television In Tokyo · · Score: 1
Buddy of mine is a famous musician and is currently touring in Europe. I set his unit up for him and he's using it to watch football while on the road. He said he watched a 4 hour game the other day from Germany (home in Los Angeles) on his PSP and it woked like a charm!
    • Couple caveats though: (problems Sony has because it's a content provider as well has hardware manufacturer, and they insist on including DRM which often times kills the product)
    • It only allows you to set up 1 psp per LocationFree unit. (Stupid! No reason for this, because you can only watch one unit at a time anyway. Would have been nice for me to be able to check it out once in a while)
    • I had to purchase another PSP for him, set it up, and Fedex it to him (real pain in the ass) since it couldn't be set up remotely.
They do allow you to watch on a PC but we are Mac based, so that was not an option for us. Other than that, my buddy has it set up with his TiVo and he records the games and controls the TiVo remotely and he says it works like a charm.
